Maybe, its the smoke and blowing hot ash? Maybe the massive amounts of heat coming from a giant burning tree.
Otherwise, you know, I don't see any reason they havn't moved back to that little tiny island about 20 feet next to the giant burning tree expelling heat and smoldering ashes.

I think thats where some of the inspiration for the game came from.

i was under the impressions the trees roots were anchored into the bed of the sea. Regardless, the island was pretty much covered exclusively by the tree and would be basically smoldering ash and charred bodies - not the kind of place a bunch of tree hugging elves would appreciate.

Centralia was a booming coal town, until the coal mine under the town was caught on fire, and to this day the fires are still burning underground, so even when the fire isn't above ground, the effects of it caused the town to be evacuate and left, the land pretty much being broken apart by the burning fires under it.

I dunno why I thought of this but it made me think of this story
This is what I thought of also, except "I wonder how long the tree will take to completely burn down or if it will be like that town with the fire under it and slowly burn for decades." You know, because the thing is massive.

How have you been a 3 year member and not known that teldrassil isn't just a tree it contained towns and a city for level 1 to 20 at the least

That's not a coincidence. SH is based, in part, on Centralia.

I thought there was nothing there before and that which little landmass there is was pushed up by the tree's roots.

Teldrassil was placed on a small island, but the island itself isn't exactly big. All of the towns you visit in the starting zone are in the tree itself, plus one extra zone you don't see ingame that is only in Stormrage. That's the Worgen enclave (not just one small tree and not in Darnassus itself)
The only village on the island is Rutheran village and that is in between the tree's roots.
These roots, btw, reach down into the heart of Azeroth, at least from what we learned in Stormrage. We can only hope that this wound is effectively cauterized^^

Oh and the fire was hot enough to be felt over in Lor'danel, so the houses in Ru'theran are ashes as well. Just as all the grass and everything.

Maybe in a few years things can grow back there. You know, life finds a way and all that. But for now it's gone.

um.. now it hasn't been shown well in game but.. the entirety of the Night elven city of Darnassus and ALLLLLL of the map that you can see from there when you zoom out one level.. is actually IN THE TOP of the tree in the branches. SO when the tree burnt down.. so did all of it.

Not against catapults. The island is basically strategically useless since there are goblin flying machines, catapults and who knows what else.

The problem is Teldrassil was the island. So no, they can't use it. As opposed to the Forsaken, who could re-inhabit Undercity once the blight disappears. If it weren't controlled by the Alliance.

I'm amazed that thing hasn't collapsed!
Yes. In early versions of the game the island was called Kalidar. I believe this was before the devs decided how big they wanted to make Teldrassil.
