And what should I be? An elf? Boring, a human? I'm one irl, there's far too many fantasy games with humans being the heroes. I'd rather not play the boring and generic races that you see so often dominating fantasy games.

I wish they would make a forsaken allied race, it's the only race I ever liked in the game, best animations, best dance, and they're the only race that speak English in a proper accent. Instead we get a load of lame elf races.
Why not?
Sadly as Death Knight, I'm exempt from playing allied races, otherwise I would play Dark Iron Dwarf. But my alt, which I also play a lot, is a Pandaren Monk. I created him starting with Pandaria, because I liked both the new class and i do actually like Pandaren. He has served me well ever since and I see no reason to abandon him.
So my main is a Dwarf and my most played alt is a Pandaren. My original, pre-Wrath char was a Gnome Warlock, and I also somewhat maintain him.
People play races they like. I find something beautiful in every one of them. Dwarves are fun with their lore and culture. Gnomes are funny. I like the relaxed attitude of Pandaren.
I'm not really fond of Night Elves, because they do not really appeal to me. Its just personal preference. I also find Humans somewhat bland. Its a fantasy game, so being able to play anything but Humans is fun.
Racials and Animations.
Notable NPCs are the last thing I consider when I make a toon. Tyrande is so annoying I'm surprised to see anyone who bases their racial decisions on things like that playing a female Night Elf.
Because... WE DAMN WANT IT!!
The latest expansion does not promote Faction War. It promotes half-baked ideas and systems that explode under your ass.
I would argue playing a Gnome or Goblin fits BFA PERFECTLY.
You think Nelves are cool, I think Goblins are cool? What now? Is your mindset more worth than mine?
Other than that... what's not to love about a cute little Goblin Mage lady throwing grenades at you?
Because pandaren look really cool, and while they lack recent story development, their base lore is just as cool.
I play a pandaren priest and mage, they look cute and that`s about the extent of the reason as to why.
Scarcity creates value. And with literally 1% people maining goblins (less than Nightborne) at 120, they must be the most valuable race of all!
Because this game is not historically built around creatng badass heroes.
I know you’re probably shitposting, but this game WAS suposed to be an MMORPG, about creating any character - ANY character - not just a Hero, let alone a “badass” hero. but the COD jockeys who also play this game keep forgetting that...
well i did main pandaren during legion as i wanted to play shaman and i'm mostly into human/elves therefore there was no race for me, my ex gf lovingly created an adorable yet somehow badass panda and i said 'fuck it, i'll roll with it'
it's also not hard to see why pandaren would appeal to female players
for goblins and gnomes i guess it's for the 'troll' element, having your badass orc death knight beaten by some big nosed smiling weirdo who weight's roughly 1/6th of an orc is ridiculous, gnomes though are kinda cute, they look like smurfs... goblins are just assholes though, thats's even harder to guess
Pandas need to be removed from warcraft history. Worst thing they have even come up with.
