    Sell me Guild Wars 2

WoW sucks. Shadow is ruined and likely not getting repaired.

My wife is disinterested in her hunter and lock too, and has given up raiding already (I would too were I not a guild leader).

I was looking for other MMO's to go to, but the market is pretty barren right now.

There are some new entries on the distant horizon that have some promise like Pantheon and Camelot Unchained, but there is no meat to either of them yet, and they're both likely candidates for vanishing in a puff of smoke & bankruptcy months before launch.

So I dug around the internet and found that the second most popular MMO is still Guild Wars 2, years after launch it's still got 2.5M players: those aren't rookie numbers!

I played a Mesmer in the beta and generally liked a lot of the ideas in GW2, but launch hit around the same time as a WoW expansion and I got pulled the other way. Memories are generally fond but vague, and outdated by now.

    Questions:

    1. What do you like about Guild Wars 2?

    2. What improvements have they made since launch?

    3. What is better about Guild Wars 2 than WoW?

    4. What do you dislike about Guild Wars 2?

    5. What's going on with the class system? Do you need to evolve your Mesmer into a Mirage? What if the base class sounds cooler?

    6. Rate Guild Wars, out of 10.

    Thanks!

Go to the GW2 subreddit for this, there are a lot more people truly passionate about the game there and that's what you're looking for.

    1. I like the progression system. There is no leveling in the expansions and it is straight gear progression. All content is scaled so there is no one shotting anything. Also jumping puzzles

    2. Mounts, masteries, gliding. They added a ton more group content.

    3. I think they are different games. I play them for different reasons. I solo play GW more to get map completion and group play in WoW.

    4. Gearing and stats seem more convoluted and arent your typical +crit, +haste as far as I can tell.

    5. Once you hit 80 and have the specific expansion, you can travel there and get hero points to unlock those specs. You don't have to play it, but nearly everyone in end game is either one of the elite spec.s

    6. I give it an 8/10 for what I do in it.

damn. scaled content. lost me there.

Guild Wars 2 is worth your time, especially considering it's a one-time purchase. My favorite component is the PvP, as it's segregated from the rest of the game. In this little bubble, everyone is equal with access to gear vendors to spec their character how they see fit. It has a rather unique gearing system, where the two weapons you choose effect what abilities you have for your class and how it plays. The WoW equivalent would be being able to choose between a melee, ranged, or healing priest just by swapping your weapon- and getting new sets of abilities with each choice. This leads to players being able to distinguish themselves in skill-based combat, not by their ability to make a raid schedule. You also have no restrictions on changing gear, enchants, build, etc. You can even have a level 2 alt and be 100% even with a max level version of your character because everyone is normalized. Couple this with an engaging combat system (a hybrid between the target and attack style of WoW with the telegraphed action style of Wildstar), and you have a hell of a PvP scene.

It's a fantastic system, which alone is worth the price of the game.

I found the PvE to be extremely lackluster, with the exception of the 5 man scenarios. There is an extremely toxic PvE scene in this game where the elitist jerk types dictate what the meta for each spec is, and refuse to play with anyone who isn't running it. The problem is the game doesn't support addons, so people are determining their damage output by... no joke.... recording their gameplay, playing it back slowly, and adding up the numbers that appear in the scrolling combat text. Fortunately this scene can be entirely avoided as there's no real need to raid max level- it's entirely optional. Not in the WoW sense that you'll suck unless you do it... I mean legitimately it's completely optional.

So if you want fun, balanced, action oriented MMO style PVP- you'll dig it. If you're looking for PvE satisfaction this game is not for you. There's no point in comparing WoW to GW2 because they share so little in common, set out to accomplish very different goals for a different audience, and overall are two very distinct products.

There are so many things I wish we could have in WoW from GW2. Armor dyes, normalized PVP, gear vendors, automagic grouping when out in the world, the world scaling, the multi-guild options, etc. Oh yea, and jumping puzzles. The movement in GW2 is so fluid and controllable that there are these platformer-esque puzzles you can solve by working through them.

I give it the same rating I give SWTOR: Side bitch / 10. It'll never be my main bitch but has been a go-to side bitch for many years.

Considering how many shitty products charge more than the cost of GW2, with 9 hour forgettable campaigns, I think GW2 is an easy recommendation to make to someone.

GW2 is a great game that is probably in the best state it's ever been. Given that it's basically F2P now, you're better off trying it than looking extensively for opinions.

I will say that it has a bit of a directionless feeling to it at max level as there's so much different things to focus on and not a lot of vertical progression. It's very chill, though.

There's no holy trinity in the game. So any instanced content like dungeons and raids are absolute crapshoots.

  9. #9
Its different than WoW and has quite a bit new story content so even if you don't enjoy it by the time you catch up on the story you should beable to go back to Wow for another 6 months to a year before being burnt out.

Not really. The support (healer) role has firmed up since HoT and is a pretty important part of almost all higher end group content - you can get through dungeons and low level fractals just fine but higher level fractals without proper support (either more offensive support like a chrono or more defensive/healing support like a firebrand) are pretty rough.

Same goes for raids, but there's also a bit more of a tank role to play in raids as well. Can't speak to it personally since I haven't bothered, but there are aggro mechanics that function in raids and a certain level of boss management that needs to be done.

Overall though, while I haven't done a ton of dungeons I've never really experienced them being a crapshoot. Dungeons (even the explorable wings) aren't too difficult even if you don't really know what you're doing, and low level fractals are piss easy to get through unless you have an epically bad group.

You should probably quit wow for good. The game isn't going to improve and you're wasting your time with it. Blizzard is going to keep doing this gaslighting bullshit where they pretend to give a shit about the community and then give you the cold shoulder for months only to come back and fake apologize and "fix" the problems they created to fuck you in the first place.

I don't know anything about Guild Wars 2 other than the fact that when I did try it it felt/looked extremely outdated. It's a hard pill to swallow if you somewhat care about visuals that don't look like they're a decade old. I'll admit I gave up early on it but I can't get into a game that's been out for too long when I have zero experience with it.

MMO scene is dead to me. I wouldn't bother until a new game that isn't shit comes out.

Interesting combat, fun classes, and a very casual approach to MMO's, which is great if you're looking for low-time commitment to this genre of game.

In 2014 I gave it a shot and I'm going to be honest I really don't like the class and weapon system thing. Also if you don't like how few abilities you have in WoW then you'll find a worse issue with GW2.

I played with a couple of friends for a couple of weeks but it really wasnt my cup of tea

I find that GW2 actually has more buttons than WoW. Wow gives your OOC stuff to put on your bars.

In WoW, youre average build is a resource builder + resource dump + a button you hit on a proc + a button to press if everything else is on CD + a CD.

You have some self buffs that you always use on CD, on average. And that's its. 6 buttons, again on average. Some classes have more, some less, but that's WoW in a nutshell.

In GW2 you can get away with pressing 1 in open world environments. You're going to piss people off, you might die a lot, but you can get away with it.

In any other game mode your more than likely using You 10 skills on your bar + 2-5 on your other weapon + at least one F(1-5) skill.

Some classes/builds are using a lot more. Ele in PVP or WvW, I'm using 26 skills.

I don't even want to get into the dance you can the Engie rotation.

What I like about WoW is that my rotation feels more controlled/precise/deterministic.

GW2 rotations feel more involved. A lot more consideration in your position but it can be tiring.

First of all, GW2 is a very different kind of mmo. A lot about it is better than WoW, but a lot is worse as well.

The main difference is the gearing system. Progression in WoW comes from ilvl, progression in GW2 comes from gear with different stat combination and builds/speciaisations. Again, theres positives and negatives but it's also what might break the game for WoW fans. There isn't a feel of progression, but on the other hand, you play mostly for the fun and cosmetics.

    So...

    1. Meta events. These events bring together dozens of players on a cooperative experience with lots of loot at the end. It's a great feeling i have yet to get on any other mmo. It truly feels massive and epic.

    2. I'm not a full time player, but the best improvement for me is how they created the specialisation lines, from wich you can choose 3/9 traits. It gives it a more GW1 like feel in the character customisation.

    3. Map exploration, map design, meta events.

    4. The gearing system. There is no feeling of progression. It's hard to catch up and once you do, theres little else. Exotics super easy to get, ascended super grindy to get the first set.

    5. Play what you want solo. In team content you will be expected to play a meta build.

    6. It's tough. I don't have a frame of reference. If WoW were to be 9/10... GW2 is a 7. I loved the original GW1 and the customisation. GW2 has great outdoor gameplay/maps, but the combat system declined greatly in quality as did the storytelling, wich despite that is still much better and personal than WoW.

So, i can say i love GW2, but i can't really invest heavily on it, because it doesn't feel rewarding. The carrot on a stick is an important motivator and makes catching up easier. Ascended gear is required for fractals and raids and is quite honestly harder to get than a mythic raid level set in WoW. It feels super grindy. It is best played casually.

Disclaimer: I haven't played through the last 2 patches.

I can also get behind what the above poster said. Rotations on GW2 can be more complex, but not necessarely more rewarding. Honestly, it all revolves around keeping buff stacks up.

Hey mate, you seems like a guy who want to have fun again playing mmorpg. And you are right choosing GW2, this is why:
    - It is an RPG - most of the modern mmorpg loses the RPG aspect. In GW2 it is still alive. You feel linked to your character, you feel bad or good when you made xertain deciaions

    - the game is alive - the world in GW2 is ever changing. There are loving story ipdates adding something new to the game. Meta events where huge amount of players take a part in the events, defending their lands, raiding bosses etc.

    - long term goals - wow was missing the long term goals. Evrything u did become irrelevant after new patch comes up. In GW2 everything you do, and you work towards will be always relevant. Legendary armors, weapons, great sets for achievements, skin earned by cillecting rare crafting meterials and so on

    - Classes - class design in GW2 is great. Each class is different, gameplay is fact paced, and there is a lot min/max stuff if you are into that. But you will do just fime even if you are more casual player who dont want to spend a lot of his time learning rotation
    - Diversity - most classes have multiple builds, each has different cons and pros
    - Crafting matter - you can craft the best gear in the game

    - Community - if you like to communicate with other GW2 has some great community. People on chat are talkative and most of people are nice to eachother. It is easy to find friends during events. It is not like in wow where people could be replaced by bots just so you can finish dungeon

The only thing that hold me back from going 100% GW2 it is lack of competitive aspect. There is very little competitive areas as the game is mostly focused on story and exploratory aspects.

Ps. Base game is free to play. Just try it.

Reality with GW2 is this, its the perfect game if you are an achievement hunter/pets/transmogs etc they have so many, its really really hard to resist if you are that type of player, but apart from that its also a very nice few weeks/months depends how much you play of story content.

Its a very interesting game if you are looking for something rather fast paced with lots lots of story.

The only problem is to buy all the stuff.

The content is free after you buy it as long as you log in when its the "Active" story, after that you have to buy it.

If you dont want to buy the "patches" (Basically, Base game (F2P)-->story patches-->Expansion 1 (Heart of Thorns)-->Story Patches->Expansion (Path of Fire)-->Story patches you can still just buy the expansions and have story gaps :P

They are in Patch 4 of Path of Fire now, so you get my point.

I picked it up last year after not having played for 5 years, it gave me a few weeks of nice story line "leveling" so to say since everything scales, i still log every other month to do the questline so i dont have to buy it and to keep up with the story!

Dont forget the area events, which most are raiding wise material, basic tactics etc, it can be fun.

    1. What do you like about Guild Wars 2?
I can do things by myself if nobody is on. With WoW there is a real lack of content to do by yourself when you aren't doing guild activities(outside of mount/goldfarming). In this game there is a lot of things to do at all times. Having alts isn't as bad in this game because with ascended gear you can share it with your entire account, so you can farm out certain sets of gear and be good to go.

End game in this game is a multitude of things, it's crafting legendary armor/weapons, farming for karma to buy items, farming mats to make ascended gear, doing guild events, doing raids/fractals. I just got into and it's super fun and I feel like it requires a lot more situational awareness than wow does.

The mount system as a whole is amazing, every mount serves a purpose, they all have different traits. This is what made me stick with it because just walking around was slow this gives you fun new ways to explore.

    2. What improvements have they made since launch?
Leveling isn't as grindy, without any boosters and just exploring, I was around level 38 in my first day playing. I haven't really played much except for PoF so I can't give a full answer here.

    3. What is better about Guild Wars 2 than WoW?
The community is 1000 times better in my opinion. It of course has it's toxic players but I have not ran across them and everyone seems to be generally very helpful.

    4. What do you dislike about Guild Wars 2?
It can be very overwhelming to get into since there is really no linear path to play the game, there is so much to do so sometimes you can be overwhelmed and not sure of a real direction to go towards. This may or may not be something you like.

    5. What's going on with the class system? Do you need to evolve your Mesmer into a Mirage? What if the base class sounds cooler?
Just like wow, you play the specs that are the meta, really all that there is.

    6. Rate Guild Wars, out of 10.
7.5/10. Def. worth the play. I have completely stopped playing wow this expansion for it. I was 5/8 Mythic when I quit.

    1. What do you like about Guild Wars 2?

The abilities are fun and the world is great. Its fun to just zone out and do events.

    2. What improvements have they made since launch?

Too many to list. Game is unrecognisable from launch. Has raids, dungeons, a decent story, stuff to farm etc.

    3. What is better about Guild Wars 2 than WoW?

The difficulty. The vast, vast majority of content in GW2 is trivial. This means that you can really play with most people. In WoW you can't just pick 4 random goons and hop into a +10 or a mythic or even heroic raid. They're going to die like rats, do 20th percentile dps, call you and everyone else shit and then leave wasting your time. This doesn't happen in GW2 until you reach the peak of end game, which in WoW terms would be 90% of the latest mythic raid cleared.

    4. What do you dislike about Guild Wars 2?

If you aren't into fashion, theres very little repeatability in a given patch. Everything is collectible. WoW is kind of like this now too, but still has gear progression (although thats been ruined by massive amounts of RNG.)

On a given new patch, you can expect:

    - 1-2hrs of story content
    - 2-4hrs of unique events in the new zone
    - Maybe a new dungeon or new raid wing
    - Rest is collectable pets and so on

I also hate the gem store. Its bloody awful. Its as bad as the WoW services shop if not worse. For instance the baseline bag spaces are i believe 80 slots when maxed out. You can buy more space to make that 160 or higher. The same goes for bank. Baseline is like 80 ,but you can stretch it infinitely. This is a game with a ton of junk items that you need to keep, food and so on and that runs out VERY quick especially as the bank is account wide not character specific.

One massive change that would help GW2 retain players is making bag spaces and bank slots maxed by baseline. Like, you kill a world boss - tequatl, and he drops bags and items that result in about 14 slots taken. So you're constantly playing inventory management. There is an event in one of the Heart of Thorns maps where you can loot around 20 chests. That gives you a good 50 item spaces worth of loot. If you haven't bought spaces for real money, you have to stop every 30 seconds to clear your bags before you can loot more.

Inventory management in GW2 is hell.

    5. What's going on with the class system? Do you need to evolve your Mesmer into a Mirage? What if the base class sounds cooler?

GW2s system is both good and bad. In WoWs system, each expansion over rites the previous expansions work so if you liked 5.4 warrior, 6.0 rolls around and you want to kill yourself. In GW2 they simply add another spec. This means variety, but variety means a ton of imbalance. If you think WoW's balance is bad with spec 1 doing 20k dps while spec 2 does 15k dps, GW2 knocks that out of the park - spec 1 can do 35k dps while spec 2 struggles to get 12k dps. Its really hit or miss. Your spec is often times either OP or terrible. Theres really any inbetween.

Rerolling is also a non-option, as the aforementioned bag slots that you have inevitably bought are character specific. The idea of going back to merely 80 slots after playing with 160 is extremely unappealing.

    6. Rate Guild Wars, out of 10.

5.5/10. Great story, great gameplay. Plagued by the 'no subscription' model. There should be an option to subscribe for £9 a month and in exchange you're given every account service for free, for ever. But thats never going to happen, as £9 is literally what they charge for two bag slots.

  20. #20
I played GW2 for a month when it launched, was entertaning but there was a ton of collectible stuff that I'm into (dangerously similar to WoW), and I was also playing WoW at the time, long story short, I sticked to WoW cause I couldn't let myself ever play 2 MMOs simultaneously (a huge negative point for me was the focus on PvP).

I'm really disenchanted with WoW atm, guess I'm waiting for a miracle to happen and they announce something great in the Diablo universe. Point is, WoW is currently not delivering it to me, so I feel you on the MMO department, I'm spending my playtime on DotA 2 for now.

Forgot to add, a friend of mine used to play Secret World, hell of an MMO he said, it has lots of holiday events and whatnot, feel free to check it out.
