Activision Transferring Publishing Rights for Destiny to Bungie
Bungie posted today that they are regaining publishing rights for Destiny.

As an independent studio setting out to build a brand new experience, we wanted a partner willing to take a big leap of faith with us. We had a vision for Destiny that we believed in, but to launch a game of that magnitude, we needed the support of an established publishing partner.

With Activision, we created something special. To date, Destiny has delivered a combination of over 50 million games and expansions to players all around the world. More importantly, we’ve also witnessed a remarkable community – tens of millions of Guardians strong – rise up and embrace Destiny, to play together, to make and share memories, and even to do truly great things that reach far beyond the game we share, to deliver a positive impact on people’s everyday lives.

We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.

The planned transition process is already underway in its early stages, with Bungie and Activision both committed to making sure the handoff is as seamless as possible.

With Forsaken, we’ve learned, and listened, and leaned in to what we believe our players want from a great Destiny experience. Rest assured there is more of that on the way. We’ll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we’re looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond.

Thank you so much for your continued support. Our success is owed in no small part to the incredible community of players who have graced our worlds with light and life. We know self-publishing won’t be easy; there’s still much for us to learn as we grow as an independent, global studio, but we see unbounded opportunities and potential in Destiny. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. We hope you’ll join us there.

    See you starside.

I mean I highly doubt Activision were the reason Destiny 2 ended up being so bad.

Yeah I wouldn't foresee a huge resurgence for Destiny either.
They always told me I would miss my family... but I never miss from close range.

Not that simple, Bungie was still a separate entity. Blizzard Entertainment as a company no longer exists, they're not "owned by Activision" they are wholly a PART of the Activision Blizzard company. All the devs could break off and form their own company, but they would lose all the IP that is owned by ActiBlizz as well as the ability to use Blizzard as a namesake.

does blizzard even have the leadership to leave without morhaime?

so Bungie needed the money to get destiny off the ground, now they have it the cancer that is Activision can fuck off? SeemsGood.

In before someone tries say Activision isn't to blame for anything yet no-one has a good word to say about them.

Uhm,. so,. do we keep the destiny 2 in our battle.net account or do we need to worry about transferring to some new unknown random weird platform?

They relinquished publishing rights to future games, they're still the publisher of D2 though. D2 isn't going anywhere, but D3 (if there is one) won't be on the launcher.

Didn't it come out recently that Bungie is the reason Destiny sucks and not Activision? Wonder how many people are going to fall for Bungie's scam again. Maybe Bungie will actually get their shit together for Destiny 3, :/

You got a couple bil laying around to buy all their IP? Blizzard doesn't exist as an entity anymore, they don't own their IP, ActiBlizz does.

Would be nice if they did, but I doubt it will happen sadly. I gladly hope I am wrong though.

I think we're missing the writing on the wall here. Bungie isn't fighting to get back publishing rights to Destiny. Instead, Activision is cutting Destiny.

Activision is the publisher. As such, their sole responsibility is profiting off of the games they publish. Destiny 2 has been a rough ride since it's release. Forsaken was meant to be a resurgence since they even gave away the base game to lure people in, but that hasn't worked out as planned.

That's not to say this isn't a great thing. Bungie's biggest influencer will be out of the picture, so they can get back to making a great game in their own right.

Blizzard is Activision. Any grievance you think you have with Activision is shared because it is Activision-Blizzard is one company.

How do you propose they "leave", when ATVI owns them, outright? They'd have to buy the company from ATVI, and ATVI would have to be willing to sell.

I'm sure it would only cost 40, 50 billion dollars to buy themselves out. That'll happen.

Blizzard is a massive chunk of ATVI's income, they're not going anywhere.
