Man am I glad to see the damage isn't as bad as I thought. It seems most of the ground level will survive, and so rebuilding should be possible; not cheap or easy, and it'll never be as good as it was, but it's still far better than to see the entire structure collapse as I initially feared.

Damn impressed by the people who built it in the first place. If there's one thing pre-modern engineers knew, it's how to build stuff that lasted. Mostly thanks to using far, far more materials than strictly necessary, but impressive regardless.

It's sad this happened to such an iconic building. It's happened so close to easter too.

Yeah it's a no brainer. Just because it won't be the exact same isn't a reason to scrap the whole thing.

Giving a quick look at the history of other large famous cathedrals suggests that burning down a handful of times is part of the deal. Not attempting to be flippant, more a comment that when it is rebuilt there's no real reason to suggest it is any less the original than any of the other "800+ year old Cathedrals". Ship of Theseus and all that....

When I'm reading some comments here, I cannot help but thinking of the Talibans and the Buddhas they destroyed, or those other crazies from ISIS and what they did to Palmyra. That same attitude. The only difference is that they actively destroyed those invaluable treasures of humanity, while these philistine iconoclasts are passively agreeing with their disparition.

I'm glad the main structure survived, all the art and history.

The thing now to consider, once the scaffolding is removed, it having the structures integrity checked, how much damage did the fire do to the stone and masonry.

We luckily live in a time of modern machinery and having better tools to help repair it, so it won't take a hundred years to repair. But it will still take years to do so.

I'm wondering if the original plans for the cathedrals construction are stored anywhere like a vault

Looks like that's pretty much all for tonight. As soon as the sun gets up, get ready to be flooded with pictures and videos.

The original stuff, mostlikely not. They have some books and blueprint of when they renovated things left and right, for exemple the spire that collapsed will be rebuilt using the plans from 1800 when it was rebuilt. They have example of how the framing was done in teaching books. But the original blueprint of 1200? Those are long gone (or they still exist in some forgotten place that we dont know about). They dont even know where the stone used is from ^^'

I figured the Vatican would have it stored away in holding.

Yeah, I was using Mason liberally. But yeah, the wood is gone.

But seriously, who cares about the faith.

One silver lining in all this is that France as a country is absolutely choke-full of workshops and artisans that dedicate themselves to restoring medieval and renaissance structures. A Doctor in architecture that I saw on TV said that Dijon houses a business which specializes in reproducing stained glass, for example. Is it going to be quite as amazing as the historical masterpieces, likely not, but at least it's a good start assuming the political will and money is there to back the project, as it will still remain a colossal undertaking.
