Post New Mexico militia detains migrants at gunpoint until Border Patrol arrives

    Source

An armed right-wing militia group operating along the U.S.-Mexico border posted several videos to social media this week, including one in which they held about 200 asylum-seeking migrants at gunpoint near Sunland Park, N.M., until U.S. Border Patrol agents arrived, according to a report.

The militia group, which calls itself the United Constitutional Patriots, said it is determined to monitor the border until President Trump fulfills his campaign promise of a border wall or until Congress enacts stronger legislation to make it more difficult for migrants to request asylum, Jim Benvie, a spokesman, told

“It should go without saying that regular citizens have no authority to arrest or detain anyone,” the governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, said
in a statement to The New York Times, adding that it is “completely unacceptable” that migrants be “menaced or threatened” upon entering the U.S.

I can see more things like this popping up as the crises increases.

    good job.

we have the right to form militias, and i'm glad to see that some people are still strong willed enough to do so.

New Mexico should have citizen's arrest. Good people just trying to stop criminals.

Those immigrants are only following US law if they're seeking asylum. The part Trumpsters seem to always forget is that in order to seek asylum, people have to arrive in the US first. As stated on the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services Website:

To obtain asylum through the affirmative asylum process you must be physically present in the United States. You may apply for asylum status regardless of how you arrived in the United States or your current immigration status.

You must apply for asylum within one year of the date of their last arrival in the United States

If it is against the law to be doing this, these people should all be arrested and brought to court.

that should be done away with.

you should have to send a written appeal for asylum, which will be returned to you with whether you should come to the US to continue the process or not.

illegally entering the country, no matter your circumstance, should permanently revoke all chance for you to ever immigrate here.

Are you trolling? Or are you really just that bloody ignorant? You honestly think that people fleeing persecution should have to write a formal petition before they escape? That's a good way to get them all killed. Or is that what you're going for?

They overstepped their authority and should be brought before a judge.

You can't just go around and a pretend to be law enforcement so they should not be allowed to go around and arrest people if the law says that they can't.

They have to cross a thousand miles of Mexico to reach America. Mexico has offered them asylum.

    Why America?

Contrary to our esteemed Governor, New Mexico does recognize citizens arrests.

So what? Our laws provide them a path way here as well. If they choose to apply here then it is their choice.

    Why America?
Why not America? Because Trumpsters are threatened?

If you're going to try and troll, then at least be intelligent about it rather than spewing some random thing you heard from Alex Jones or something.

The law specifically states 6 reasons a person may be granted asylum:

    1) Race
    2) Religion
    3) Nationality
    4) Political Opinion
    5) Membership in a Particular Social Group
    6) Torture Convention

Nothing about economics. So if that were the case, they'd simply be deported upon processing of their application.

Besides, why would you care? They'd be doing all the jobs you're too lazy to do and yet still need done.

Well in that case I suppose they didn't break the law.

Still sounds like a bunch of gung-ho rednecks but what the fuck do I know.

Gain some bloody perspective and stop being so comfortable for christ sake. Maybe google what Asylum means.
What domestic or international law have they broken?

I'm rather interested in what the laws are in these situations exactly. Like, do these guys have to have some form of permits, or are they literally just guys with guns banding together? Because, if legal, that second half is a terrifying concept.

This also feels like a nice time to once again state, look up the Government data from last year. Illegal border crossings are at a 50 year low in 2017/2018. (https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/sw-border-migration)
