What expantion got half of game's lore retconed with just one tweet from Afrasiabi? There you go.
Battle For Azeroth is close second, but it's like pissing in a sea of shit.
And there was potential, even without original Metzen's idea. WOD story was bland and painfully wasteful, but it was sort of okay until...
Well, WOD's final patch came and just shat on demon's, warlock's, twisting nether's, bronze dragonfligt's and other lore for just shits and giggles. Tearing open plotholes bigger than Sargerases mother and as a result fucking up even more lore like nuclear fission reaction. The only thing that was pretty inconsequantial and inoffensive were the anternate orcs, that were mangled lefrovers from original WOD idea to begin with. (They later resurfaced with BFA, raising some interesting questions, but in latest lore writing fashion it didn't really go anywhere.)
I'm telling you guys, ever since Metzen left, Alex does not care about lore quality anymore. It's Rule of Cool in all fields, writers can write whatever and we are just expected to roll with it.
Granted, WOW storytelling was never great to begin with and Rule of Cool always played a big part, lore was relatively fine and logical. Retcons were, let's say constructive. Building on existing foundation while changing some pieces to expand the possibilities.
As soon as i see that Afrasiabi does not sees or cares about what WOD level retcons mean to overall plot, i gradually stop caring too and lose interest.
It's only me seeing a pattern here?
Legion was trying to fix the colossal mess that was the end of WOD, mess that was created in a first place to link it to Legion (So people woud stop complaining about filler expantion). Because of that, Legion overall story was sort of wasted on reestablishing concepts and making lore trustworthy again. BFA tried to pick up where Legion left just to forget all about Azerite superweapon buisness and start it's weird plot that refuses to explain itself clearly, chews on it's own tongue while saying "Pride" and "Honour", sets dangerous plotpoints that blizzard will not be able to finish and overall feels like it belongs in diferent medium. Maybe i'm wrong and crazy, but i would safely assume that next expantion will try to fix BFA messes. (And boy they already made quite a few)

Definitly WoD. I can't remember that multidimensional time traveling, or time traveling alone ever worked out. Way too many loopholes and illogical stuff happening.
I don't like time travel plots because reasons like Garrosh back to old Draenor. But keeping that aside the history wasn't bad, problem they didn't developed it. They throwed it so early and killed any character development or any logic plot.
BfA with all the "smart" people working on the story is probably the expansion with the worst story of all WoW history. BfA is the episode 4 of S8 of Game of Thrones, nonsense everywhere, things happening because reasons, characters acting as idiots, throwing away stories because doesn't fit anymore...
I'm no fan of BFA's story at all (especially as a Sylvanas evil horde fan and watching it devolve into garrosh 2.0) but BFA can still recover as it's about halfway over.
WoD is over and it is what it is forever so i will say it is the worst
WoD's story was trash, and not even finished, but it was still better than MoP 2.0 Tree is Burnt Edition.
Scheduled weekly maintenance caught me by surprise.
I'll take lacking over actively terrible any day.
WoD's story was decent assuming you were capable of understanding the very basic time travel premise. Sure, it petered out towards the end but there were plenty of good moments and characters to be found.
Meanwhile, BFA's story is just terrible in every way for everyone. (except the undead edgelord kiddos, but they'll get their disappointment at the end of the expansion)
Horde players forced to do Sylvanas' bidding despite the fact she's acting like a supervillain? Check
Alliance players falling victim to plot induced stupidity at every turn? Check
A ranking would be more accurate - rank xpacs by lore best to worst.
NOTHING can be worse than WoD's story, that loveless, trope-laden abomination they jammed down our throats for no reason whatsoever.
That doesn't mean BFA's story is GOOD, though.
Honestly, I like WoD if only because the art and sound team really carried that expansion with the zone design. Shadowmoon Valley was so cool and even Frostfire was interesting sans the constant ORCZORCZDRUMZNTRUMPETZ of your garrison.
"It's 2013 and I still view the internet on a 560x192 resolution monitor!"
Yeah the polls prove one thing: BFA & WOD are both terrible storytelling expansions
"You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation."
No expansion's story can be worse than WoD. No contest.
I would definitely say WOD had a worse storyline since it was so random and pointless. However the BfA storyline is just plagued by bad writing and the decimation of established characters. Art and music team carried pretty hard at the start of BfA, however even that seems to be falling off with the gloomy and re-used assets coming in 8.2.
It isn't as worse as Warlords is, but it IS a carbon copy of MoP's.
Honestly Yrel being a warlord that uses the light to convert her enemies and grow her own army to protect her people from another genocide is actually a very good idea and concept to take with her, it's not totally evil but neither lawful stupid like Anduin, I want more characters like that.
