    BFA Art: Color Palette

    https://www.artstation.com/artwork/DaBgR

Found this piece of concept art today:

"An early on concept for Kultiras when it was going to be a darker theme."

I'm hoping for a return to a vivid color palette (MoP-like) with Dragon Isles, as I wasn't a big fan of BFA's general muted color palette (though I can understand avoiding the color green after Legion).

Anyhow, I found this comment interesting and might explain some aspects of BFA's art direction, as a residual effect of the original theme. KT was originally going to be darker and gloomier (?) I guess, maybe tipping their hand earlier more about it being a sort of Old God expansion. Drustvar still retained some of that at least, but I'd imagine Stormsong Valley received the most changes in early planning.

How do you feel about the color schemes in BFA in regards to environment, transmog, etc?

Stormsong could definitely have a more darker theme than it has when it comes to the colors yeah. I think Drustvar is a very cool zone, the theme is nice, and it is mostly dark there, fits with the story and overall theme. Stormsong however should have had more like the art you linked. I really like that, and it would fit the Old God/Tidesages theme better. I get that they wanted it to be mix of both, seeing how parts of Stormsong is like a paradise, but they should have pushed even harder on the darker side of it.

The weather could be darker, it could rain on a regular basis and that alone could help a little. To have this wet and dark tidesage theme, would love more work on that one. I really dig the Tidesage cloth-set, both design and the colors, and seeing how many that are using it, I guess it's fairly popular. Still farming the ensemble set from Shrine of the Storm, only to see guildies get it left and right... :P I really like Shrine of the Storm. I know a lot of people hate it, but again, the atmosphere is good. But it should have been a bit darker, and rainy!

Yeah, the artist said they were originally going for a darker theme, so they might have backtracked with that zone the most so the Alliance would have at least one Nagrand/Valley-type zone.

I feel transmog is where color shows up best, since they're a good range of monochrome, bright, muted, etc. Some items like the pirate hates do feel like they have a layer of blush, lacking some darker shades for some additional depth. With the lighting of the zones it looks fine, but it is more noticeable in other places. It also makes matching a bit trickier.

As for zones..they do feel muted? But it works with the more dynamic world building/lighting they have. Some places could benefit from richer picks such as Stormsong. It has a dreamy atmosphere due to its mossy greens and pastel meadows, but the scheme blankets almost the entire zone in an overbearing way. Even the quilbor section feels almost ghibli-esque in palette. The soothing music doesn't help

They nailed Nazmir, but Voldun fell short.

The original concept looks far better than the end result for Vol'dun

To me, most of the original concepts are much more interesting than what we have in-game. That darker, stormy version of Tiragarde looks !@#$ing great, ditto the lightning-struck desert, instead of the boring Sahara-like thing we have in Vol'dun. And Stormsong could really use a gloomier look as well, after all there is a freaking Old God lurking nearby, and there is even a place called Precipice of Oblivion ffs.

They got it right with Drustvar and Nazmir though. Some of the best zones ever made in WoW.

I can’t think of a single piece of art in bfa I dislike the whole expan looks amazing. Well other then the houses have ships for roofs that’s silly.

All of them are a lot more muted than the expansions before (especially MoP). I don't even think this is a matter of opinion as the color palette is really just a bit more 'dull' instead of cartoony.

"Alot more muted then the expansion before" wut... you mean legion? where only 1 zone had any colour, and the others colours were purple, grey, and was almost always night in most of its areas?

and where is the massive colours in wod? the white and dark red of frostfire, the brown of half of gorgrond and spires, and the dark green and purple of shadowforest?

    Lightbulb

Somehow this+ thread raised up in my memory. Most likely because OP used word "vivid". Don't know... but let's put it this way, sounds believable enough

The art team never fails. They amazed me with Argus and Antorus. Can’t wait to see Nya’lotha with the miles high towers of sacrifice
