Boris Johnson wins race to be Tory leader and PM

Boris Johnson has been elected new Conservative leader in a ballot of party members and will become the next UK prime minister.

He beat Jeremy Hunt in a poll of Tory members, winning 92,153 votes to Mr Hunt's 46,656.

The former London Mayor takes over from Theresa May on Wednesday.

I can see how, from outside the UK, Bojo might seem like a "character" with the drive to push this country forward but I'm dreading his leadership.

He was a terrible Mayor of London, and generally an embarrassment as Foreign Secretary. He pushed for Brexit, and once the vote for Brexit landed, he stepped back from running for PM as he recognized the challenge ahead and let May take the fall (pushing the UK into turmoil and not stepping up at the time really made him a Judas in my eyes). Of course, he is now back to "sort out the mess", so yes, you could call him savvy politician.

I really hope that we're going to see a different version of him now that he is PM.

Nationalism, plain and simple. Convince enough people that they’re being threatened by some existential boogeyman and they’ll vote you into power under the pretense of “wanting what’s best for the country, damn everyone else.” That your “glory has been stollen” and that they’re the path towards delivering you from any woe you find yourself by valiantly taking it back from those that they claim are wronging you.

And of course all the “nationalist leaders” really want is to be left alone to do what they will with you.

I also note that his speech basically smacked of nothing more than “make the UK great again” type rhetoric.

This nationalist bullshit represents a very dangerous path for the western world to be taking.

Lol! I am going to enjoy reading this thread.

On topic....I do not understand British politics, but did not over 100,000 people vote in the election to see who would be the next PM? And he won 2/3 of the votes? When can the people of the UK vote by popular votes to see the one they want to be PM?

Is this some weird Monthy Python sketch?

The britains elected a prime minister to get out of the EU.
    The PM resigned.
Then they elected another prime minister to get out of the EU.
    She resigned
Then they elected a third prime minister to get out of the EU.

    ?

Well atleast we’ll witness the complete downfall of an Empire that stood for centuries, and 3 of what will end in the top 5 of worst British PM’s ever.

As an American, I want to thank the UK. We are no longer the laughingstock of the world... for at least one day.

If I were a Brit, I'd be genuinely embarrassed for my country right now.

    It wasn't a popular vote.

The Tories have the most seats in Parliament, therefore they choose the PM. Normally, most parties choose their own leader for the role (though I don't believe they actually are legally obligated to do so). Since May was stepping down, the Tories were choosing a new leader, which was something that card-carrying members of the party could vote on. The 140k people was the Tory membership, and they 'picked a new PM' simply because the Tories are obviously going to choose their new leader as the new PM.

Edit: This wasn't a general election, so the average British person had no say in it. He'll probably want to avoid a general election if he can, but he might have one forced on him through a non-confidence vote if the other parties are feeling frisky or his own party disloyal.
