Working remotely is fine when you're doing development that's cut and dry like having a client with clear and simple requirements (make this form do this, connect with this API to pull / push X data, etc.). I say this as a developer who works remotely quite often, and 100% right now. There is definitely a stigma against working remotely from things like the government, but that doesn't mean working remotely doesn't have its drawbacks.
On a collaborative and creative project like game dev, it's important others that can come to your computer and look at what you're working on - downplaying that simple interaction will hurt Shadowlands more than people think. Having people be able to be in a room together and brainstorm things is a much different mood than talking over skype / slack. People are also underestimating how coronavirus impacts us outside of just working remotely, as well as the other pitfalls that working remotely has, like children / spouse, cabin fever, distractions, etc.
Another poster from a previous page also had a great point about your environment - if you don't work from home regularly or don't have the right equipment / space, that can definitely hamper productivity. Being in a high CoL area and from browsing Blizz's glassdoor profile (being relatively underpaid), it doesn't sound like most of their devs can afford a dedicated WFH space.
And speaking for myself personally, I prefer not to "shit where I eat". I like being able to go home and not have to associate it with work. I want to sit at my desk and associate that with playing WoW, not building it. Plus, I miss the social interaction that comes with a dedicated work space with other people around me. Most people downplaying these things I don't think have ever worked in an office environment, let alone the realm of software development.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed or if there isn't some sort of change in direction happening internally.

I wish mate... I could do with manager money. But you did find someone who actually understands how it works, and is having to WFH right fucking now and for the foreseeable future, and is not fucking happy about it. I may end up having to burn time off just so I don't have to work from home, that's how frustrating it is.
If Shadowlands gets delayed then im unsubbing from my Subway sandwich shop
There's also the fact that no matter how late the alpha releases, people aren't going to go "well NOW I don't care" if they are even remotely interested, they will still stop by and look at the models.
The game has been in deep managing and creative troubles since years ago, year by year it seems more and more Activision doesn´t agree at all with Blizzard, look at Wacraft 3 Reforged, it was a fiasco because Activision sliced the budget very strong and forced Blizzard to release it in whatever condition the game was by the deadline date.
Lets be honest here, the expansion announcement was all but exciting, it showed less that all trailers before, almost no gameplay, we haven´t heard anything regarding the expansion since then. This "delay" screams trouble in paradise for me, forget about covid-19, yes it will innevitable impact the industry but his expansion was doomed long before the outbreak began.
So 4000 is the new goal now? *Hope is waning*
