These are all your best bets. Especially games like TQ or Neverwinter which are more 1 mob at a time fighting.
Neverwinter is a good bet. and is on GOG RN. 2 is also good, but the party cannot split off, if you ever have a friend play with you.

Only thing coming to mind is CRPG's like Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate.

FFXII has the shitty MMO style gameplay you're looking for. It's not much of a challenge though, nor is any game doing this going to be. The challenge in WoW is gearing a raid team with weekly lockouts and then also getting them all on the same page to work as a team and defeat a raid boss. The "challenge" of WoW literally can't exist in a single player game.

How long do you think a world first race would last in WoW without weekly loot lockouts and having full control of the encounter in a single players hands? It would last hours, not days lol.

They also have to be super challenging.
I don't care about story/music/or anything else besides gameplay.

no isometric games or diablo type games.
Dragon Age Inquisition (the third one) was sort of single-player-mmo-like. It had open worldish kind of zones and action bar combat.

    DmC: DMC
    Darksiders
    DA:I
    Witcher
    TES

They're all singleplayer-rpg, free camera 3rd person POV, tons of options and button-combinations to press along with difficulty sliders. Easy to get into and difficult to master, immersive stories and pumping gameplay difficult to let go of with great music-scores to go with.

Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale I'm pretty sure are isometric, so go with my third favorite game of all time: Neverwinter Nights. It's amazing, it's exactly what you want (I think). It has several expansions and a (not quite as good story) sequel.

There's even a remastered edition with a TON of extra content (all xpacs plus a bunch of new stories) on Steam, though it's a teensy bit pricey. It's also based on the tabletop Dungeons and Dragons, if you ever find yourself interested in that.

Are the most similar titles I can think of

Might be more difficult than you think it may be. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was the ONLY game that 38 Studios released before they filed bankruptcy in 2012. It was released for Windows, PS3, and 360.

Have you tried shadow of mordor and its sequal, shadow of war? Its a fantasy setting, with (imo) buttery smooth gameplay. It’s not tabtargetting, but it is cooldown/proc based combat with just a few buttons.

Wasn't Sword Art Online game basically you playing an MMO but solo?
You can control characters but also give them roles and what not...
I really liked the idea of it, but the game was buggy as hell.

Only thing that comes to mind are other mmo's.

Try just solo leveling in Elder scrolls online or Starwars the old republic.
I found the leveling on both of those games to be very enjoyable.
None of us really changes over time. We only become more fully what we are.

There are 2 types of games that, for some reason, will never exist my dude.

    "Like Skyrim but multiplayer"

Combat like wow? CRPG’s maybe. The Dragon Age games on Nightmare might be what you’re looking for.
