Amazon caved to AOC: "She was right"

It may not be HQ2 but AOC declares victory and trolls Amazon over New York expansion

People wanted to give Amazon free money and benefits while the infrastructure of the same city is crumbling (public transport, education, etc.) and common people's benefits were getting stripped. People were afraid that 'being mean' to King Amazon would mean there'd be even less money. People were afraid that holding business to rules and law was too much to ask.

Turns out, those people were wrong. Amazon caved. One less super-yacht and a week of snorting cocaine from teenage super-models asses for Bezos and a few more billions to be used for the public instead.

What can you say. Some people expect that if we throw billions at a huge business, a tiny fraction will trickle down onto them, so we have to kowtow to them and throw our taxpayer dollars at them. And they're always wrong.

It's almost as though she realized that the US's most populous city, with a diversified economy and chock full of educated professionals, didn't actually need to incentive Amazon to come.

    Funny, that.

The article does not give any info on this new lease, so I'm not entirely sure that Amazon's corporate greed hasn't won.

The new spin is gonna be that she didn't do enough to keep Greedy "Jeff Bozo" out of NY.

The new spin I've already been hearing is that it won't have the full 25k jobs attached to it, as if that's anything more than a drop in the bucket for NYC, let alone NY as a whole. Yet they'll still be paying NY taxes to be there.

Nevermind the implication is that it cost billions of dollars for Amazon to guarantee those jobs, almost like a bribe.

Hell, realistically speaking if NYC actually charged money to Amazon for the privilege of allowing them to have their HQ there, Amazon would realistically probably end up paying up.

It's fucking simple, it's just an extension of the "Gravity model of trade" (it's the same reason why Brexit is breathtakingly stupid). Due to its economic mass NYC will attract businesses and trade, you literally don't have a choice if you want a chunk of the money pie. The further you are from NYC the smaller that chunk becomes.

Race to the bottom argument has always been weird with every aspect of the economy.

    For example
No company is reporting there numbers after taxes so no executive will be punished for lower profits because of taxes.
Lowering taxes increases investments....I would argue that increasing taxes will increase investments because when you lower taxes you reduce the incentive to invest more.

This is also what current US economy shows:
Trump tax cuts lead to direct less business investments.

Yeah, and this boils down to one of the arguments conservatives often make, that if we raise taxes, then businesses will move elsewhere. The problem is, you still have to pay taxes for the region you operate in. The US is one of the largest economies in the world, and the largest consumer economy in the world. Businesses aren't going to pack up and leave if we increase taxes. That would ultimately hurt them more than help. They can move their HQ somewhere else, but their operations in each state will still count towards state and federal taxes. The only thing it changes is the taxes on the corporate entity part of the business.

Yep businesses need people not the other way around, the void left by a business will always be filled by another business. Good to see that finally an US politician has a backbone and doesn't look only at their bank account.

When AOC emerged there was this smear campaign on the right to portray her as a kind of Sarah Palin of progressivism-an airhead with extreme views. I think they confused here unpretentious manner with a lack of intelligence.

It is notable that no one is even pretending she's that now.

Hopefully, after 8 years or so, she'll be experienced enough to run for WH. I'd be extremely happy for 16 years of Warren then AOC.

This country has been so extreme right for so long, that Obama was actually center/center right. We need to pull this country back to the middle. The only way to do that is to go left.

AOC was wrong, yes amazon pays zero corporate taxes, but its hundreds of thousands of employees all pay payroll taxes, and amazon even went out of its way to give them 15$ an hour, also they plan to add 1500 jobs not the 24500

$15 per hour is the minimum wage for NYC as for the number of jobs as several states will tell you they aren't really obligated to bring x amount of jobs and most of the times those companies do not. If you want an example look as Wisconsin and Foxconn they screwed the state and got a big fat check for it.

So in your opinion it’s better to tax people on minimum wage then the biggest corporation in the history of the world?

So because the employees pay taxes means it's okay for Amazon not too? How the hell does that make sense?

Amazon doesn't have a zero tax rate they have a negative tax rate that's right they get tax payer money at the end of the year now thanks to Trump's tax cuts.
