I dropped out and stayed inside for 8 of those 9 years. Still a recluse.

I rather enjoyed the last decade. I made good money, started a company, and didn't die.

this decade had some good things in it.

films like Joker, toy story 3, spiderman into the spiderverse, the boy and the beast, avengers infinity war and end game, shows like bojack horseman, game of thrones, stranger things, gravity falls. Gay marriage being legalized in places, as well as other social and ethical rights. New scientific discoveries and exploration, like seeing pluto up close for the first time of a black hole or clear images of distance stars and galaxies, the higgs boson accelerator, and better prevention for HIV and other diseases.

and of course this has been a decade of 'social progression' or the social justice era, which I'm sure many here have been happy about getting to shout and scream about how awful everything is despite you living in the most advanced era in human evolution, but theres no pleasing everyone.

and yet you survived. try being a recluse in something like 1719, might not have worked out as well before internet and food ordering services.

I’d say it was good. I’m more honest with myself about what I want to do with my life and I’ve found hobbies I enjoy outside of video games like painting miniatures or cooking.
Outside of my personal bubble the world has been the best entertainment. I can’t believe no one is charging to watch the shitshow.

Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh. You touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.

Actually he is right. Yes they existed, he didn't say they didn't, but they didn't get wide spread until the early 2000. I had one in the late 90s and it was a .25 cents a min and I believe it was about 40-50 just to have the thing active. But by 2003 I did the math and plans got cheaper, I was able to get rid of my lan line and switch to a cell phone for about the same price, as long as I didn't use more than 400 min during the week (nights and weekends were free) it was only about 50 a month. Also around that time they got much smaller, I had bought one of the first flip phones with a camera, where as my phone from the 90's was a brick, something you didn't carry on you.

All i can come up for the last 10 years is the rise of the snowflake generation and the complain culture.
Well like anything it depends how you look at things. I agree social media has become cancer and politics more tribal in the last decade but a there also have been a lot of nice tech advantages and with the rise of streaming I love how I can pretty much À la carte what I want to watch. My car has bluetooth and all I have to do is start it up and my phone auto connects and my playlist starts going.

Yeah this decade sucked. But not for the reasons you seem to think they sucked for.

It was a defined by a shitty economy, climate change's effects really ramping up, surveillance states becoming the norm, endless wars simply becoming a fact of life, the resurgence of racism and fascism.

All these things the cumulative consequences of several decades of absolute shit decisions made by Boomers and Gen X.

What most pre 90's science fiction (even much of 90's science fiction) completely failed to predict is the explosive growth and ubiquity of the internet. Yes, there's a lot of "cyberspace" related scifi and predictions but it never quite got it right, nothing really predicted just how extensive computer (especially wireless) networks will become.

Nor has anybody really foreseen how the internet will impact and shape culture.

I also gladly trade the absence of flying cars and off-world colonies for silly luxuries like a sky that isn't dark smoke grey 24/7.

Off-world colonies, the fact that humanity becomes mobile, ensures the survival of mankind, we don't die when this planet dies, or we get taken out by some stupid rock asteroid thingy hurling threw space that has no appreciation for donuts, the mandalorian show, hamsters, waffles n other cool shit this planet came up with

I know all that and I'm all for it, but it needn't be "at whatever cost".

I think you need to rewatch Blade Runner. Flying Cars and space colonies doesn't really offset the world being a complete shithole.

i can count on one hand how many people i saw regularly use a pda that WASN'T work issued. they sucked back then. they were a joke. little more than a novelty. in the 90's and early 2000's they were terrible.

People would have lived streamed from inside the towers if it happened today.
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

As a decade, peeee-ew. I didn't think anything could be worse than the 2000s but there you go.

Great time for films and TV though.

I mean Australia is on fire, there are people in concentration camps around the world, and an impeached President in the US just provoked a war with Iran.

But sure, someone wrote a critical article about some video game and that's the end of the world.

P.S. I'd be a lot more worried about said President literally blaming video games for mass shootings and implying they should be regulated, personally, but what do I know right?

Imagine how you're going to feel the day you wake up and realise that video game companies superficially catering to social progressive movements is because they have a profit incentive to do so, ie it's because of capitalism lol.

Also, loot boxes... EA... the Epic Store... exclusives... Pay2Win...

Imagine if you went back in time and told the audience of Blade Runner that instead of flying cars and synthetic humans we'd have a month devoted to not beating off started by neo-Nazis.

Time to put more effort into your life if it sucked. Sold all my bitcoins, invested that in market when Trump got elected and now retired with nothing but time and money to do whatever I want.

Damn son you sure must be young.
You miss the satanic panic of the 90's,
The conservative and liberal lead moral attack against the media and censorship of things like tv and radio....in the 80's and 90's.
The pure out blame of everything on "violent and graphic video games".

SWJ these days are a walk in the park vs the 80-90s

and stop crying about socialism till you give up your social security, medicare, fire, police, highway, school system, etc etc....
