I've never heard of boiled dinners

So I've never heard of boiled dinners. I saw a video on Matty Matheson's channel and can't decide what to make of it. Is this popular in Canada?

The food doesn't look too good, but the guy in the video is disgusting.

Yeah and most soups we eat here in Finland are basically this kind of food. You boil potatoes+veggies+meat.

    Like this, meat soup:

I find it hard to believe that people have never heard of boiled dinners. Have you never had a stew?

It is a great way to use tougher meats.

    That was upsetting to watch.
If you want to make broth, you can use cheaper meat that fits the job better.
If you want to eat the meat, at least season it and give it a nice browning before you boil it to smithereens.

In general, why boil when you can braise?

What a waste of ribeye though.

Thanks to TGF (the Great Firewall) I can't see the original video, but the "boiled dinner" I'm used to is often called a New England boiled dinner. It goes back to the days before hotpots (and refrigeration) and builds off of something you were going to be boiling anyway like cured meat. Although it is prepared by boiling stuff, it isn't really a soup.

Corned beef and cabbage is one form:

    Seafood boils are another:

And here's a more general version of a New England boiled dinner (Corned beef and cabbage is a bit of a special twist popularized as Irish):

As you can see, a good bit of the seasoning gets added by the individual diner using sauces or relish.
With COVID-19 making its impact on our lives, I have decided that I shall hang in there for my remaining days, skip some meals, try to get children to experiment with making henna patterns on their skin, and plant some trees. You know -- live, fast, dye young, and leave a pretty copse. I feel like I may not have that quite right.

Skipped this video of his but I do love watching him. He can get pretty hilarious when he isn't being censored on munchies.
