Millenium Interview with Ion Hazzikostas - No Patch 8.3.5

Millenium Interview with Ion Hazzikostas - No Patch 8.3.5
Millenium sat down with Ion Hazzikostas recently to discuss Visions of N'Zoth and the future of World of Warcraft.

    Shadowlands
    • Ardenweald will continue the stories started in the Emerald Dream and Emerald Nightmare.
    • There are currently NO PLANS FOR A PATCH 8.3.5..
    • There may be some small systems tweaks or updates for stability between now and Shadowlands, however.
    • Horrific Visions aren't designed to be the same sort of roguelike dynamic experience as Torghast.
    • Horrific Visions are pretty static in terms of what to expect when you go in. Torghast is a different experience each time.

    N'Zoth and the Ny'alotha Raid
    • The manifestation of N'Zoth's power is a little different than what we dealt with in the past. He is going to subvert our minds and wills to transform Azeroth into a nightmarish future.
    • When creating raids, the team sees what cool ideas that they have and what characters have been set up in the past for this moment to revisit.
    • Creating the end raid is usually a bit longer because they try to place more bosses in it than previous raids in the expansion.
    • They also try to consider what inventive mechanics they could implement that players haven't seen before.
    • Ny'alotha is very real, but exists in an alternative reality that is starting to merge with ours.
    • If we are victorious against N'Zoth it should be the last we hear from him, but we'll see!
    • Dying in Ny'alotha is as permanent as in our reality.
    • Getting rid of an Old God for good should remove the corrupting power from our reality.
    • There are many forces at play in the world of Warcraft. Removing one may tip the balance in favor of others and there may be consequences to that we explore in the future.

    Essences
    • There are currently still no plans for account wide essences. The system at its core is about player power and that is usually something that they don't allow to be account bound.
    • The team is still looking at overall essence acquisition rates and tuning how easy they are to obtain based on what they discover.

    Corruption System
    • The team has wanted to move away from titanforging for awhile now.
    • The team agreed that there was too much randomness and undermining of item level from titanforging.
    • Corruption was a replacement that they team came up with that also manages to tie into the story.
    • Corruption will not carry forward directly into Shadowlands.
    • The team wants to explore more variety in gear sources in Shadowlands, such as making sure players who PvP obtain gear good for PvP, Mythic + rewards being geared towards Mythic + and so on.
    • Ion believes the Corruption system is less random than titanforging because there is effectively a limit on how many you can wear because of your corruption level, meaning only a small handful of Corrupted items can be worn at a time.
    • Your weekly Mythic+ cache is a regular source of Corrupted gear.
    • The team wants to get back to a place where you can feel confident that if you get a piece of Mythic raid gear, it is as good as that piece can be in terms of raw power.

    Awakened Affix
    • Ion isn't 100% sure, but he believes the obelisks have a couple of different places that they can spawn each week, and the bosses associated with them go through a small rotation as well.

    PTR and Grinding
    • The holiday break kept the PTR up longer and the team was able to get more feedback on Ny'alotha encounters, and the relative balance of Corruption, Affixes, and drawbacks.
    • Grinding is a loaded term. Generally, the more skill something requires, the less time it may require to earn. Example - Some players have more time to grind reputations but aren't necessarily a hard core competitive player.
    • Sometimes, rewards may feel mandatory for someone who doesn't enjoy the type of content required to obtain it. This is something the team is always trying to listen to feedback on and adjust.
    • Balancing all these systems for a variety of different play-styles in one of their greatest challenges.

Holy shit!!! He actually said it! Jesus christ.. maybe I will get shadowlands if this ends up being true.

This is completely false. Corruption has a chance to roll a random effect with 3 different tiers. It only multiplied the randomness of titanforging. Also, after some weeks, the cloak allows you to wear more anyway... The problem with corruption is what do you do in the beginning? You just don't wear the item and keep it in your bank? If you uncorrupt it then you won't have the corrupted item anymore when your cloak gets higher resistance.

    Agreed.

So sick and tired of this "Lul all content is viable"-crap, because it inevitably leads to "You should be doing all this content to stay viable"...

As for the thread: There's already a thread highlighting this fact, it was made some time ago.

I also have to wonder how people can be disappointed with the lack of something they knew absolutely nothing about... Like, would an 8.3.5 make 8.3 better? Would it introduce major new content features? Class redesigns?

No. BfA has not been Legion, that much should be clear by now. A .5 patch in BfA is just a minor patch. Let 8.3 be the end of this expansion, thanks.

No 8.3.5 means no ptr for it, which means alpha/beta should be earlier in theory.

Because no content from now until Christmas is terrible? Minor content is better than literally nothing

I don't experience "no content", since I'll play other games when WoW doesn't deliver, but I'm surprised people still act outraged over the inevitable content droughts.

Minor content by BfA standards would've accomplished nothing. But, each to their own. I for one am glad if they focus on Shadowlands and make sure we don't have a repeat of BfA launch.

Oh, is that why Infinite Stars is 500% better than every other corruption, even after it's nerf?
Scheduled weekly maintenance caught me by surprise.

Ion did not say there is no 8.3.5. What Ion said was "we currently don't have any 8.3.5. plan". This leaves it completely open to a 8.3.5 possibility, but at the same time making no guarantee that way they aren't committed to it. He also said there may be small tweaks and here there which usually come in the form of a patch. There's also the pre-expansion patch that always happens that has a possibility of adding.

Yeah, I don't get where people are getting "confirmed no 8.3.5 patch."

If there is nothing and we get 9.0 in July/Aug, 9.0.1 in aug/sept then fine. We've waited longer. I wonder if that's really how its going to go though. All i know is that the leveling changes would really be useful in extending wow's current available content while we wait for shadowlands. Hopefully they realize that and work towards getting the pre-shadowlands patch out sooner rather than later this year.

Because people that write these articles and do YouTube posts, like Bellular’s that I just recently watched, have buzzwords and phrases such as “8.3.5 cancelled” as in Bellular’s video. There’s also the issue that people read and don’t understand, or jump to conclusions. How many people read “no plans for 8.3.5” but then immediately conclude that it translates to “absolutely nothing happening. For reals. Completely guaranteed to not happen!”
That said, I don’t agree with less randomness with corrupted gear. My Hunter has gotten 2 pieces, one is the standard quest reward. My DH has since gotten 4, 1 with 5% leech I won’t ever use. I can almost see my next alt getting none outside of the quest one.
I really do hope what they stated about PvP and m+ gear means that they will all be separated. Maybe different affixes only active in that content and/or world content, but deactivated in the opposite. What I’ve been saying I think they should do since m+ was first announced.

First of all, just to get it out of the way, we currently don’t have any 8.3.5 plans — there may be some small systems tweaks or updates for stability between now and Shadowlands, but Visions of N’Zoth is really the concluding chapter of Battle for Azeroth, and we’re excited to focus our attention on Shadowlands and the upcoming beta for Shadowlands that’ll be opening up over the course of the year.

That seems pretty conclusive to me. 8.3.5 wouldn't be a big patch anyway because x.x.5 are only ever minor additions/system changes, so it's not like we're losing anything.

I'm glad they're dropping BFA now because it's been a lost cause ever since release. Shadowlands has overshadowed 8.3 ever since its announcement.

The next expansion will release sometime between August and October. It's not that far away and basically fits the timing of a 8.3.5 patch anyways. BFA's content has been sparse since the start, their original internal release dates delayed, and the systems were a failure.

Minor content is neat but I'd rather be out of BFA. So more resources to Shadowlands is a plus.

.5 and .0 patches take time to develop, then test, then put out. These are planned out in advance. If there are no current plans right now with 8.3 just launching, im pretty positive it's not coming. I'm very excited about the pre expansion patch, but that'll be 9.0 if there is an 8.3.5 cool, but doubt it's happening.

While I agree with the general sentiment, this has a potential to go very wrong with M+ in the mix. You really don't want to end up in a spot where you need all mythic raid gear to compete in high-end M+, but all the M+ you do then rewards gear that is completely useless to you. That's a very effective way to gut the entire system, and needs to be avoided at all cost.

Only 2 of the 7 expansions have had a content patch after the last raid.

Wrath and Legion, and ruby sanctum sucked.

Why are we acting like 8.3.5 is some long standing tradition they are aborting?

Precisely, which shows that those complaining were probably not around for the huge content droughts at the end of Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria..

One thing is for sure: I will take a long break after the story is done.

It feels like there is so mutch passion behind WoW; but not enough resources or cash.
Does all the money go to other IPs?
