"Some little virus is not going to stop me from partying, we have been looking out for this for a long time" Some kid on the news. Good time to leave Florida, as earlier reports that warmer weather might stop this thing is still not proven.

People here surf during a hurricane so those not giving two shits about a pandemic doesn't surprise me in the least.

Fort Lauderdale has closed their beach to the public, though just this week which is the third & final week of spring break. So the kids will just get liquored up in the rooms I guess? It's okay, college kids are immortal.

A Vaccine is 1-1.5 years out. You can't maintain a full on quarantine of the entire world for that long. So the #1 priority is to keep healthcare from being overwhelmed, and then #2 keep society slowly trundling along where possible because we are in this for the long haul. Wait it out, everything will be fine next month is a pipedream.
Its taken China 3 months to slowly being to start some things back up and you have to hope they don't see another flare up in 2-3 weeks time.
From what I understand from local news is that there is that vaccine is indeed one year away and nobody in MoH is actually pinning their hopes on this. On the other hand they are currently trying to find effective existing treatment, while government is trying to buy time - there are 8 existing named medications already identified that have a good potential to cut the duration and severity of the infection that are being tried out on existing patients.

I am pretty sure within 2 months some sort of reasonably available medicine will be found to be effective and once that happens they will slowly release the lockdown, as this will have decent treatment already. It's basically how SARS was eradicated, vaccine was ready just about the time it died out on its own thanks to quarantines and existing medications.

There are also more pessimistic projections, where this thing will be beaten back during summer, but will come back next winter with vengeance, from what I understand it's a worst case scenario because it's most plausible one. The problem is that many countries can handle a spike like we have now once in a decade, but if this shit will be next winter too it will be much more challenging.

every person that has spoken this way needs to be arrested, beaten within an inch of their life, and injected with corona. then dumped in the wilderness with broken legs.

So hopefully them getting SMS and order and knowing they can be tracked will put a chill on their irresponsible behaviour.

Whatever is needed to try and reduce new cases down the road and hopefully get some sort of normalcy after couple of months. "Muh freedumbz" can take a chill pill for next couple of months.

This year is fucked, I'm just glad we have entered it economically strong and prepared, so at least it won't be a complete wtf trainwreck shitshow,,, just a shitshow. Unemployment is projected to spike from 4% to mid-high teens.

Government says they will cover people losing jobs/being sent on unpaid leave using relaxed Social Security procedures and they won't require usual bureaucracy steps - as in employers can report their employees being sent on unpaid leave/fired and employee will automatically get unemployment benefits without even having to report or without having to register/appear in the employment agency. The gap is that self-employed freelancers and such seem to not have solution yet, so these guys will get fucked hard unless Social Security conjures some solution there.

In other news, no new measures today. Government is assessing whether to go full lockdown, not yet official, but there noise already - indications and some leaks, so there must be real talks about doing it soon.

Ministry of Defense is going to make use of military budget to import/procure/smuggle medical equipment per request of Ministry of Health using their connections and various sources, bypassing the usual bureaucracy and shit.
We have a major manufacturer for Mechanical Ventilation apparatus in our country. In a recent article, after mentioning how they are working 24/7 and have to face stupid embargoes on some of their parts, some EU-competitors no longer exporting, they cited a massive order from the US military, but which will have to wait for the bigger part as some of their production is being directed to Italy among other places in direst need.

In a later article if was specified that our own military had ordered 900 machines, to supplement the maybe 1200 we have available nationwide, but short term they'll get only 50...

I've spent all day enjoying myself at Universal before, not much different then someone who goes out to the beach or parties to enjoy themselves.

right. I keep seeing the 'get it once' theory but the virus may well mutate enough to get it repeatedly over time.

it is quite a horrific prospect. (are we allowed to say that here? I cannot remember which forums frown upon words derived from 'terror' and 'horror.'

Every society has a layer of decadence that needs to be broken before people start reacting with rationality and self-preservation. Unfortunately, it usually takes mass deaths to break that layer of decadence.

not in the west, the risk profile of the vaccine was horrible.

it is suggested as a possible cause of the severity of some cases in china.

    It or it may not.

I, personally, don't think it's good for mental health to go full throttle doomsday scenarios. I believe and hope that this will either be one time deal or yearly shot like flu, where you get a shot for old and new strains and we know how to figure that shit out relatively well.

Of course, this indeed can mutate faster than flu, even flu shot done in autumn might not protect you from flu in spring, because it does change. But I do hope and expect us to have reasonable solution for it overall including vaccines and medications eventually and I sure bloody hope this eventually be next year and until then we hopefully will have some quick and dirty repurposed existing medication to at least cut the fatality and severe cases rates.
