I agree 100%. The problem is that people don't listen and even if they did, the effect that this has on the economy is absolutely devastating. It could be mitigated by having people wear masks in public which would allow some level of activity to continue while lowering the rate of infection.

Masks are only helpful if pretty much every asymptomatic carrier is wearing one. If even a few people are asymptomatic carriers but not wearing a mask, they can potentially infect everyone they come into contact with, mask or no mask. If you can't get people not to respect physical distancing enough even for self-preservation, then you're not going to get them all to wear masks.

And meanwhile, that's billions of masks that are far more effectively used in the health care industry.

China has been easing lockdowns and they are not seeing a resurgence of the virus by doing that.

That's kind of the antithesis of saying they were never stringent to begin with, you know...

An opinion pieces and an explanation of a cultural stigma. Neither one of those contradicts the statement you bolded, because neither of those are examples of health officials telling people that masks are effective for civilian use.

Culturally, Asian countries are far more likely to listen to the advice of physical distancing and adequate washing in addition to the observed social stigma of not wearing a mask. Without that kind of adherence, those masks are effectively wasted in the US, especially as more than a few people will entertain a false sense of security while wearing the mask and potentially cause and/or receive more harm therefor.

That is the government's fault, specifically Trump's for not utilizing the Defense Production Act to ramp up the supply of masks.

We can agree on that. Trump's whole excuse for firing the CDC's Pandemic Response Unit was that those people would be "easy to hire back if we needed them". But that excuse goes out the window when he refuses to do things that need to be done at the very start of the emergency. Either you're the kind of person who can get the ball rolling ASAP, or you're not. Now we're in the worst of all cases because he pretended he would be that kind of person, when he is nothing of the kind.

That is pure conjecture. They have one job to do and they didn't even try. If they had tried they would now be going "well we warned you for years that we needed emergency supplies of masks, ventilators, IV bags, etc." but the truth is they were as caught off guard in the grand scheme of things as everyone except as a select group of shunned experts.

Sure, it's true that they were caught off-guard. But I don't believe for a second that any warning they would have provided would have been adequate enough to sway the people in control of the purse-strings in DC.

On a personal note, i just learned that i was exposed to someone infected with the fucking virus last week. And i've been felling a little under the weather last days (mild headaches, runny nose and mild sore throat). I just had a mental breakdown yesterday.
And i still live with my boomer parents.I'm terrified for them.

Unfortunately I don't think that's true. Italy and Spain have lots of sunlight and warmth, but virus has been spreading rapidly in those countries.

Basically, Trump was warned about what was coming in January by the intelligence community and by various other experts, and that the country needed to rapidly prepare and get ready for its localized spread.

He did absolutely nothing.

The federal response has been a disaster since day one and as a result tens of thousands will die. Most of those will have been deaths that could have been prevented with a proper federal response.

Knadra supports Trump / voted for him despite knowing that Trump is an incompetent clown in a position he's utterly unsuited for and incapable of fulfilling the duties of.

Knadra very likely still supports Trump and will continue to support him despite the tens of thousands of deaths that will be directly attributable to Trump.

Ergo Knadra carries a share of that death toll since he's helping bring it about, but I don't think he gives a shit.

The only thing that mildly encourages me is that most symptoms appear before 5 days, and only in extreme cases they appear between 6-14 days. And more than a week have passed.
And i've had a runny nose and mild sore throat since last week.
I just hope that i have some allergies or something like that.
