@Doctor Amadeus, yeah hamburger or pizza are definently the first two that come to mind in the USA. For California I would say avacados and San Francisco sourdough bread are the first two items that come to mind.

So a giant fried seafood platter.

    Toad-in-the-hole

Made it tonight using a four egg, bbcgoodfood.com recipe. Served with mashed potato, fried onions, baked broccoli (coated in harissa and olive oil) & gravy.

    Nom, nom, nom.

[Insert obscure 80s/90s tv reference] If I were a food dish, Cilla, I'd be a toad-in-the-hole because I always rise to the occasion and my sausage is always perfectly browned.

I tried salted cod once in some Portugese dish but it went horribly wrong. I think I didn't rehydrate it properly.

I'm no cooker, but the idea is to have it in water a couple hours before you start preparing it.

The traditional chrismas dish is just salted cod with some patatoes.

My favorite dish is actually this

It's called carne de porco à alentejana.

Funny how Americans consider fries their thing :P

This has been part of my weekly meals for as long i can remember.

Swap out the pot roast with a steak and the salad for belgian endives chopped up and mixed with mayo.

And what we call "hutsepot" especially in the winter. Smashed potatoes wit carrots, pieces of bacon. Some put scallions in them i just use regular onions or red ones and sausage.

I am certain there is far more haute cuisine considering we share a lot with the french but if i had to go on a month holiday with no access to belgian food and on my return, this is what i would go for.

Is calling it "hutsepot" some Flemish thing or something? It's hutspot in Dutch.

Meatballs, boiled potatoes, lingonberry jam, some kind of sauce (usually containing cream) and a serving of some cooked veggies. I prefer Brussels sprouts. :3

For the US as a whole, I’d say a hamburger or hotdog. For California specifically ... it’s just a mishmash of stuff here. Maybe one of those Korean/Mexican fusion things?

    Cheese Fondue naturally :

Half Gruyère, half Vacherin Fribourgeois, melted with the white wine of our vineyards.

Using for dips swiss standard bread or tiny potatoes. And with sides of parchment thin dried meats and sour pickled gherkins.

Appears they are different dishes according to wiki. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutsepot is the Flemish one, while https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutspot is the Dutch one.

Although what we cook here looks closer to the Dutch one and we also call it "wortelenstoemp" so could be because i live near the border that there's a greater resemblance to the Dutch than Flemish one what could be a more central to west sort of thing.

Nice, Swiss food looks good, especially with all the melted cheese.
