More than one-third of all active-duty troops and more than half of minority service members say they have personally witnessed examples of white nationalism or ideological-driven racism within the ranks in recent months, according to the latest survey of active-duty Military Times readers.

The poll surveyed 1,630 active-duty Military Times subscribers last fall on their views about political leaders, global threats and domestic policy priorities. It offers a troubling snapshot of troops’ exposure to extremist views while serving despite efforts from military leaders to promote diversity and respect for all races.

The 2019 survey found that 36 percent of troops who responded have seen evidence of white supremacist and racist ideologies in the military, a significant rise from the year before, when only 22 percent — about 1 in 5 — reported the same in the 2018 poll.

Enlisted members were more likely than officers to witness the extremist views (37 percent to 27 percent). Minorities were significantly more likely to report cases of racist behavior than whites (53 percent to 30 percent).

Overall, troops who responded to the poll cited white nationalists as a greater national security threat than both domestic terrorism with a connection to Islam, as well as immigration.

Cassie Miller, a research and investigations specialist for the Southern Poverty Law Center, said the Military Times poll findings should not come as a surprise.

“Historically, this has been a problem for the military,” she said in an interview. “We’ve been pushing the Defense Department to take this issue more seriously since 1986. There are certain parts of the white power movement that value military experience and are often recruiting there.”

Miller said the problem has grown in recent years as groups with goals advocating violent insurrection have begun pushing more extremist agendas.

Earlier this month, an Army veteran and member of a neo-Nazi group was charged with trying to illegally transport weapons along with a Canadian Army reservist into Virginia for a gun rights rally. The former soldier was identified as a member of The Base, a small militant group espousing Adolf Hitler’s ideals while preparing for a race war in America as part of its ideology.

I think that's a bit of a misconception, from what I've heard they tend to mirror the rest of the population. A not especially scientific poll by the Military Times also showed a small lead for Biden among polled active duty military, with veterans leaning more towards Trump. Trump has insulted troops as much as he has praised them.

Because they more or less delusionally think that they represent the "true US patriots" and that the "evil liberals and deep state" in the government have been suppressing the true Americans for far too long and that the holy and noble US military will see that these "rebels" represent the true spirit of and take up arms alongside them.

Or they believe that if they incite violence it will lead to a hard-line division between liberal and conservative states (neverminding the hundreds of thousands of people that live in any given state who all have wildly differing political beliefs,) conscript the armed forces therein and they'll fight alongside the heaven-ordained patriotic conservative states and either dominate or split off from the cruel, heathen liberal states who look down on them.

Or sometimes they're just violent hateful whackjobs that want to inflict pain on people with no real ultimate goal in mind.


Remember, these people are ideologically derived from a failed attempted-nation that intentionally split from and killed their fellow countrymen all so that they could maintain the right to own human beings as property.

You are correct. Unfortunately, right-wing extremists do exist, and in a greater number in the United States than left-wing.

The mail-in voting due to COVID (and the republican attempts at slowing it down) really protracted this.

If this were a... normal... year, we'd likely have seen compelling results on election night proper.

I somewhat doubt it. If Trump is out of the white house and is brought under legal proceedings and effectively exits the public eye, I think his sway will really begin to wane. He'll have lost his legitimacy (well, the appearance of legitimacy that he had) and will have no authority to speak from. I'm fairly confident the republicans aren't going to want him as their face anymore and will drop him like yesterday's trash from their party image.

There will be his few nutjob followers who may act out, but I expect the FBI will be watching them like a hawk as best they can.

The biggest factor is he loses the biggest platform anyone in the world has. there will always be extremists and scary people, but we won't have the president of the united states telling them they're good people and to stand by.
