Or we could shift our economy and culture to accommodate for shifting conditions. I get that just letting people - or more to the point, other people - die is easier for most people, but it's not like we strictly speaking have a need for things to go back to normal to begin with. Most companies can at least somewhat reliably shift their work online to begin with. They may not like it, the workers may not like it, but it is certainly possible. Most things can be delivered and if the spread itself is lowered, we can even keep the workers there reasonably safe. Some industries cannot truly cope with covid, especially the gig industry, bars, tourism. But we are wealthy enough today that our societies could take care of these workers until new employment can be found.
But that would involve lowering our standards of living. And that is the crux of the issue in many cases. Giving up something for yourself is hard. Someone you don't know dying somewhere is not. It's just human nature, really. Especially when we convince ourselves that only the 'weak and old will die in high rates'. Masks are the quintessential example of that. They are annoying to wear and restrictive, but for most people, they don't cause any harm at all. But lots of people would rather have ten people die in their town that they don't know if it means they don't have to wear them anymore.
There is no can't when it comes to these covid measures. There's only a won't.
Though this is only tangentially on topic, haha. Well, kinda. Biden seems to be more of that opinion, unlike Trump who certainly keeps saying that we can't protect the victims.
I believe since yesterday every Trump tweet has been flagged. This is not some shit political rube, this is the POTUS who can incite violence.
The bs policy of 'person of public interest' needs some boundaries. Twitter is also chicken shit knowing all the conservative tears they don't want to deal with.
"Buh dah DEMS"
Problem is, you're landlocked with a lot of other places who may not be handling it well. In addition to being on the same landmass as China.
Canada Total Population = 37.59 Million
US Total Population = 328.2 Million (Little less than 10x more)
Canada Total Cases per day = ~4000
US Total Cases per day = 100,000+
Canada Total Cases adjusted for population size = ~40,000
Part of the problem are these fucking idiots not wanting to wear masks and social distance. I went to a "Republican" establishment for lunch with my co-workers on Friday and we got stared at when we walked in with face masks on because nobody else in the place was wearing face masks.
The places getting slammed by Covid right now is Trump country. Trump has been blitzing through the US causing, essentially, super spreader events.
These fucks in my area crying about losing their jobs and losing their businesses... Good, it's their own fucking fault for supporting a party who regards social distancing and mask wearing as junk science.
More evidence that this is ending.
GOP senator Roy Blunt hedges on acknowledging Biden win: 'It's time for the president's lawyers to present the facts'
"Hey, I think I have some of his books!"
No no, that's Roy Blount Jr.
To put this in MMO-C terms: "I'm not a Democrat, but isn't it time Trump showed evidence, and didn't Biden do a good job..."ABC’s George Stephanopoulos noted that Blunt’s GOP colleagues, Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Ak.), congratulated Biden after the former vice president was declared the winner on Saturday. “Joe Biden has won this election. Why can’t you acknowledge it?” Stephanopoulos asked Blunt.
“It’s time for the president’s lawyers to present the facts and it’s time for those facts to speak for themselves,” Blunt responded.
“I think that happens pretty quickly,” Blunt added, in reference to certifying the electoral results. “Almost every state within 7-10 days of the election goes through that entire canvas, there are always some changes, seems unlikely that any changes could be big enough to make a difference but this is a close election, we need to acknowledge that.”
“I thought that Vice President Biden did a great job last night talking about where the country wants to head and one way to do that is to finish that election the way it deserves to be finished,” he added.
Indeed, and the other big issue is that whenever candidates propose actual nitty gritty policies to fix these inequalities (worker rights, higher minimum wage, tax increases on the rich, universal healthcare, etc.) they can't even finish their sentence before half the country cries about socialism and a good chunk of the other half gets nervous about socialism. Couple that with the voting base being so different from State to State, or even within States, and yeah no shit the country is mired in inequalities that people love to rail about but don't ever want to actually see fixed in case they are on the losing end, and/or (insert class of people they don't like) also benefits from these new policies.
The cycle will be unbroken so long as the collective psyche of America doesn't change. See you in 30 or so years to see if that happens but don't hold your breath I say.

I would have to agree with this. Just take a look at Reagan / Bush for a modern example.
Raegan won re-election in 1984 with 54.5 million votes with Bush Sr. as his Vice. In 1988, Bush Sr managed to beat Dukakis with 48.8 million.
I think that as long as it's not Trump on the 2024 ballot, there will be a big regression in Republican numbers.
You know your not the only nation with postal votes, or to have such a large % of the vote via Post.
Americas system is inefficent, it is that qay because of republican meddling in the system, meddling they do because there policy's are archaic and not popular, many policy no other conservative party in any other nation nation stands for, so they know they only way to get power is resticing and hindering democracy.
