They're worried about being primaried by trumpsters. I think the party heads like McConnell are more worried about long-term solvency, while the more cut-and-run spineless ones like Cruz and so forth are at least temporary placated by knowing they can wipe their hands clean of having to have been seen as condemning Trump for his crimes. But I think the McConnell types are a little more prescient in seeing that Trump and his brand cost them the 2020 election and the senate, all in one fell swoop.

I did understand you meant out of self-preservation, and I think that's true for some of them, for sure. I also think some of them are wholly invested in what's really just a continuation of the anti-democratic project that has defined Republicanism for many decades. The threat of insurrection comes solely from the right; I think they know their refusal to hold Trump accountable invites another, and I don't necessarily think that's an accident.
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time. --Frank Wilhoit
While local GOPs in pretty much all the states in the US had gone into the deep end of right fringe movement after the November election. California GOP pulled back. They kicked the qanon spouting and Trump loving Shannon Grove of Bakersfield from Senate minority leader position and replaced her with Scott Wilk of Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita is basically a suburb of Los Angeles. Wilk is a moderate. He is so moderate that he turned down a co-chair position on the recall campaign against Newsom and openly said that the proper time to oust Newsom is during the 2022 election.
The party probably would have kicked Grove regardless. The national news only talked about the 4 Congressional seats that the GOP won in CA. However, at the local level, two GOP Senate seats were lost in the November election. Democrats now control the State Senate by 31 to 9. GOP won one and lose one in the Assembly, and Democrats control the Assembly 59 to 19 with one vacancy.

If Cruz had an ego it certainly didn't show when his was wife was insulted.
Trump got acquitted not once, but twice ffs. What's the world coming to?
^ This is from a self-proclaimed Trump-hater who goes round vote-policing, berating and insulting other users for expressing their doubts and reservations about Joe Biden. He also urges others to end relationships and friendships just to "vote Trump out". https://ibb.co/2jRnZGC He can't seem to walk the talk himself.
Republicans in Pennsylvania tried to overturn the election results in 2020, but their state Supreme Court stopped them, so now the Republicans are going to try to change the way judges in the state are elected so they can try to overturn the next election results that they don't like.
