The break really did help with the nonsense... I don’t know if it’s schadenfreude in people who got banned or deleted accounts during my break that helped or if it was simply getting away from the same thing repeating constantly... but, it’s a lot better now, than it was when I left.

Edit: I am glad to be back... don’t get me wrong there.

And all of it irrelevant. It's an extremely virulent disease and you have a large population with no herd immunity. Everyone will get covid sooner then later you can only slow it down.

How exactly is a pandemic response team and Center For disease Control, irrelevant to a pandemic? You need to explain, because that’s a hell of statement.

Sounds like controlling the disease, maybe we should invest in some kind of center for disease control?

I’m learning a lot from Trump apologists. I’m thinking next time I have car troubles, I’m taking it to city hall. Who better to fix my car, than politicians?

Smallpox was an extremely virulent disease (comparable R0 rates to COVID-19; R0 of 3.5-6 whereas COVID-19 is estimated at 1.94-5.7), virally transmitted by respiratory droplets like COVID-19.

Did everyone get smallpox? Not really. It still killed hundreds of thousands of people a year, and no herd immunity ever naturally emerged.

Do people still die of smallpox? Nope. We eradicated the virus, globally. Through more than a century of vaccination efforts.

So yeah; slowing COVID-19 down until we can develop a vaccine for it, that's the reasonable path forward. There is no real indication that there will ever be a natural herd immunity to this thing. Early studies suggest there won't be. We need that vaccine. And it's being actively worked on, with something like a dozen strong candidates entering trials. Actual production and distribution is way out, since those trials likely need at least 6 months if not a year or more, but we're moving as fast as possible. And slowing COVID-19 down while we wait only makes sense.

Your position here is unreasonable. It's an expression of a desire to get people needlessly killed. It's misanthropic horse shit.

and have we eradicated the flu ? Sometimes nothing man-made will help and that means we need to rely on our own immune systems.

The flu mutates every year... if Covid does the same, there is no herd immunity. This years flu vaccine is 50% effective, with them rarely being over 65%.

You do realize that we only eradicated smallpox because carriers always displayed symptoms' and the disease had no animal reservoir to survive. Your projections that there will be a vaccine within 6 moths is way too opportunistic.

They don’t even understand that Trump compared it to the flu, due to severity of symptoms. If covid has the same mutative properties, it makes what Trump did and is doing, a lot worse.

No, it was the vaccine. Your projection that the vaccine will be like the flu vaccine, is horrifying.

Uh, no idiot, or smallpox would have been eradicated much much much earlier.

    It was the vaccine.

Still waiting for you to volunteer to die though. Get to it.

I doubt there will be an effective cure or vaccine for some time to come

Smallpox generally doesn't show symptoms until 1-3 weeks after exposure. It's true that there was no asymptomatic carrier phenomenon with smallpox, but I never claimed they were identical.

There is no evidence tying COVID-19 transmission to any animal vectors whatsoever.

And like I said; there are multiple vaccine candidates entering clinical trials now. That means they're potentially ready to work, now. We just can't confirm that they work until we vaccinate someone, and then check their immunity months and years later. 6 months is a minimum, really. But if a vaccine can provide even 6 months of immunity without significant side effects (more than other vaccines, say), then at the very least getting that to front-line medical personnel would be a big boon. We may want longer-term studies on efficacy before approving it for public distribution to all, since the last thing we want is a vaccine that people are told will protect them losing its efficacy after 6-8 months, just in time for the 2021 cycle to infect them anew. That is where the time delay occurs with clinical testing, and there's no way to speed that cycle up; we can't tell what the long-term effects of a vaccine are and how lasting its protection is without testing it on subjects and letting that time pass, and evaluating.

But if a vaccine enters clinical trials now (and they are, multiple ones), and it's proven effective over a year's time frame, that vaccine would be effective now, if produced and distributed. The gap is in our ability to assess that efficacy, not in producing an effective vaccine.

So in order to eradicate smallpox we vaccinated every single animal on the planet?

Seriously, why are you bringing up animals? COVID-19 doesn't have an animal vector either.

A basic grasp of clinical testing methodologies is not "pure optimism". You're fearmongering over bullshit and even your own sources are confirming that it is bullshit.

I thought the ignorant people were busy freaking about 'murder' hornets by now, and there is a covid thread if you wouldn't mind letting this one get back on topic since your ignorance has become the topic moreso than government response.
