US voter registration plummets during coronavirus pandemic, challenging both parties

The registration of new voters dropped dramatically in the USA amid the coronavirus pandemic, challenging efforts of both major political parties to enlist supporters in battleground states before the 2020 election.

The number of new voters registered across 11 states in April 2020 decreased by 70% compared with April 2016, according to a report from the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation & Research released Thursday.

Therefore it's entirely possible the entire set of ticket applications are, in fact, trolling. Which leads to the second point...

What does this particular lunacy have to do with the rally?
Everything, because part of the ur-fascist mystique y'all are seeking to cultivate is contingent on creating and maintaining a myth of a 'silent majority' both as a threat against reform as well as helping to mainline extremist beliefs by creating a false impression that they are widely held and thus deserve legitimate consideration.

We're quite wise to the tactics by now.

Interesting article outlining Biden's short[er] list for VP picks. It's the third or fourth article I've read the past week or so, and none of them have listed Abrams. Might be articles stemming from the same campaign source, which inadvertently (or whatever) left Abrams' name off. Or could be she isn't in the running any more.

    Curious.

Honestly, the idea of someone who's highest office was minority leader of a state's house of representatives potentially taking over as President makes me quite uneasy. It's something that Biden's camp is no doubt taking into account and I just don't think she really has the experience to do it as effectively as some other potentials. The job should really require some kind of executive experience but barring that usually Federal government experience can be good enough, she has neither. I am not saying she is bad or anything, I just think she is a far riskier bet than some of the other candidates out there and if there is one thing Biden is not, it's risky.

I disagree re experience, but setting that aside, someone who is on the list is the Mayor of Atlanta. Given Atlanta has more people than some states, and certainly more political depth than some of those states, it's possible that the mayor has that executive experience you [and presumably Biden's team] are looking for. What do you think?

Val Demings is pretty great, and if that helps take Florida away from Trump, that would be a very tough blow for his EC path. Florida in the Dem column would be huge.

I think big cities in some ways can be even better for that type of experience since it can give a more human side to it. Mayors don't really get to distance themselves as much from the ramifications of the decisions they make, much like Presidents can't. It also can help give more understanding of the people you're supposed to be leading. I don't really know a whole lot about the current Mayor of Atlanta, but given that she has only been Mayor for 2 years it is still a bit light. Better than nothing but I think this whole situation kind of speaks to the poor job done during the Obama years building the democratic party, so many potentials are either too old, too important where they are (senators), or have too little experience. Maybe I'm too picky but as I said, the possibility of them having to replace Biden as President is very real, and no needless risks should be taken.

Agreed. Abrams could certainly shake up Georgia but I don't think in the end the state would swing blue - especially considering all their voter disenfranchisement issues. But FL could go blue, and it's loss to the GOP would be a deathknell to their Electoral College shenanigans.

Good point re the personal touch for the executive office. Plus, of course, Biden might not make it through his term, and there is talk of him being a one-term president - making his VP the obvious choice for 2024. Agreed also re Obama fettering away missed opportunities in the Democratic Party.

Trump's highest office was Trump Tower. It became the highest in New York after 9/11. Don't really think qualifications matter for a President anymore. Not saying I think she's a good choice for VP, just wanted to point this fact out for the lols.
The distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss. Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil. When truth leaves us, when we let it slip away, when it is ripped form our hands, we become vulnerable to the appetite of whatever monster screams the loudest.

Interesting article gathering information from GOP state and local campaign leaders about how the election is shaping up for Trump. The theme of the article is that they believe Trump will not only win, but the numbers will be better for him this time around.

Normally I scoff these articles off, given the closed-eyed kool-aid drinking we typically see from Trumpsters, combined with the sycophantic nature of all GOP campaign officials. But in reading it, there seems to be a depressing inevitability to it, that despite the poll numbers and Trump daily own-goaling with his idiocy/racism/narcissism, he's going to win "by a landslide".

Less voters getting registered for the Nov elections doesn't bode well at all.

It does not - but what are the numbers being compared to? Where does the "less [than]" come from?

Wait, I mentioned this last week and you pushed it aside because your hard on for abrams could not handle it. I guess you only read or believe what you want, good luck being behind the curve. Keep daydreaming over abrams and neglecting just how bad of a candidate she would be.

Hey! Have you figured out what Tear Gas is yet? Still waiting on either a definition, or the acknowledgement that you were wrong. Shouldn't be that hard, you have had a week to think about it.

Trump also has years of experience running businesses (good and bad) and more people would consider this better experience then state level minority leader. Plus her begging for the position is really funny and I think that helped them not pick her, just wanted to point this fact out for the lols.

See, a fundamental problem with this kind of post is that you are not a serious poster and everyone can tell. If you get cornered, you run away and change the subject with another ridiculous claim. Which is why you still won't answer the tear gas question, because you think you can constantly make some new incendiary remark and duck away. So unless you actually want to start staking an actual position on something, you don't actually have a position, just an endless supply of smoke bombs.

Ah, I see TexasLies is back for some drop-and-run shit-posting. Please link where I pushed it aside - we'll wait while you ignore evidence requests while blathering on about owning the libs and reasons why you're not obligated to prove your own points.

Abrams would be a terrific candidate for the VP slot. What you quoted of me (but obviously didn't read or understand) was a conversation with another poster discussing the pros and cons of various VP picks. Did you bother to read the article I posted? Any bets from the gallery on whether TexasLies did his homework?

Trump has a successful business? Is that the one that makes money from the government when he goes golfing?

Look at him trying so hard to be relevant or make a valid point. It would be adorable if it weren't so sad. TexasLies is up to his usual antics, dropping in for some unfounded and unsupported shit-posting and then driving away to chug some more kool aid (eyes closed, of course).

Also to be mentioned, Abrams is still not showing up on any lists of short[ened] VP candidates for Biden. Either she's out of the running, the people being asked aren't really in the know, or she's the pick and they are keeping her off intentionally to make it a surprise. I'm open to other reasons as well.

There is no scenario where a million people have requested tickets who are actually interested and able to attend. That's 1/4 the population of the entire state. Mind you that figure includes children, infirm, prisoners, etc.

Trump is bragging about a number that is truly fake news.

Well...I mean...elections are won based on turnout so it makes sense that's what people, especially campaigns, are focusing on.

It also goes to show that get out of the vote initiatives are probably going to be even more valuable than normal.
