    Interesting development.

AG’s office argues Supreme Court should side with Turner over Texas GOP

The Texas Attorney General’s Office on Saturday sided with Mayor Sylvester Turner in a legal dispute over the state Republican Party’s in-person convention, arguing that the Texas Supreme Court should reject the party’s attempt to proceed with the event.

    .........................

Hotze attorney Jared Woodfill blasted the brief, pinning the legal maneuver on Gov. Greg Abbott.

“It is time for Gov. Gregg Abbott to change parties,” Woodfill said in a statement. “A Republican governor who joins a liberal Democratic mayor, Sylvester Turner, to trample on the First Amendment rights of the Republican delegates who worked to get him elected is the height of political arrogance. It seems Gov. Abbott has abandoned the Constitution and is actively working to take away our God-given liberties.”

More Americans have died in the past few months due to an entirely preventable epidemic than the number of Americans that died during the First World War and we're approaching unemployment levels on par with the Great Depression. Barring the country actively being in a state of civil war, I'm failing to see how well off people have it currently.

Oh, and I never want to hear another peep from y'all about 9/11 ever again, got it?

okay, just don't act surprised when Trump gets his ass handed to him in November. share this sentiment with your friends and be sure to attend plenty of Trump rallies.

At least we agree that having Trump as president is a challenge to overcome, but why push ourselves further with another four years?

I wouldn't be surprised. I will be surprised if he wins reelection, considering the latest polls. And if he loses, you will see me post a congratulations to the winner on this forum. In spite of being disappointed.

How do you say things like this with a straight face.

    150,000 americans dead
    Economy dying/dead
    Unemployment at almost record levels
    Pandemic only getting worse
    Trump is denying science

At what point in our countries history, save the Civil War, was it worse?

I bet you will be agreeing with Trump that the election was rigged, if he loses.

I'm sorry, but right now, I'd give anything to be able to go back in time, and actually make the permanent move to Canada like I wanted to when Trump was first elected. The only reason why I didn't is my family lacked the money and means to actually make such a massive change in our life, but if I had any inkling that things were going to get as bad as they have, I may have pushed for us to try harder.

It's not just the idea of Trump being president, but the fact that he got elected at all, that there were enough people who actually looked at that man and decided he was leadership-material. I've never considered myself a particularly patriotic person, but at this point in time in particular, I feel more disconnected from the rest of the American public than ever before.

And now it's too late. Canada is seriously considering closing their borders to America, and I certainly can't blame them. My one hope is that my family and I can bunker down and survive the craziness of the next few years (regardless of who is going to be leading America in the coming years, things are still probably going to get worse before they get better), and hopefully America will recover to the point that we can safely remove ourselves, and not look back.

Since I'm sure it's going to be pointed out to me, I'm well aware that Canada isn't exactly a paradise, either. One of the podcasts I listen to is hosted by a pair of Canadians, so I often get an earful of all the stuff they have to deal with up there. That being said, comparing Canada to America is much like comparing Biden to Trump. It might have its own problems, but there's no getting around the fact that it looks like a bastion of morality when put alongside the open, rampant corruption and stupidity of the alternative.

So, you can feel free to take that baseless and deluded optimism, and shove it right back up where it came from. Chanting about how amazing America supposedly is won't brink back all the people who have died as result of your Dear Leader's stubborn incompetence, nor is it going to magically solve all of the problems current facing the country. If anything, blind faith in the people of America and its current leaders are part of the reason why things have gotten so bad. You may be fine living in La-La Land, but the rest of us have every reason to be pissed off and terrified.

That’s 2019 logic... as countries ban travel from US, because we have a rampant pandemic, saying that you would rather be anywhere else... just makes sense.

Since NFL is an election wedge issue...

Report: Washington name to be retired on Monday
    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...red-on-monday/

Note, we still won’t have a new name. From today, until when ever they figure out the new name, they won’t have a name. They went from refusing to change the name, to now getting rid of it, before even figuring out a new one. That’s a shift... should hear from Trump soon...

A Sunday search conducted by PFT of the USPTO’s public trademark database revealed that Phillip Martin McCaulay (it would be one hell of a coincidence if it wasn’t the same guy) has recently filed applications for the following trademarks: Washington Redtails (July 7 and July 5), Washington Monuments (July 6), Washington Veterans (July 6), Washington Renegades (July 6), Washington Red-Tailed Hawks (July 4), and Washington Americans (June 18).

Other related trademarks applications have been filed in recent weeks by Richard Garrison of Los Angeles (Washington Braves, July 5); David Woods of Alexandria, Virginia (Washington Freedom Fighters, July 5), F1rst World Apparel of Santa Clarita, California (Washington War Hogs, July 5), Raymond Luchi of Santa Rosa, California (Washington Radskins, July 4), and David Howard of Rockville Centre, New York (Washington Potomacs, July 3).

Well, I actually wish some of those who said they would move to Canada if Trump was elected, had. ( Not you, I do not know who you are.)

Brace yourself. It is still possible he will be reelected. And tens of millions will vote for him. I think it will be a close race. Odds are certainly in favor for Biden at this moment however.

Indeed... I wonder how many of the 140000 dead due to covid, would still be alive if they were in Canada. I’m guessing your reason to wish they were in Canada, is different than mine.

Point of fact; Canada closed its borders to American tourists and travelers back in March. Essential travel, like shipping, is still allowed through, but American tourists getting caught inside Canada are being fined. https://globalnews.ca/news/7091316/a...-park-tickets/

I'd argue one of the big differences is that Canadians have the capacity to feel shame, as a nation. We look back at things like the residential school system (religious schools used to indoctrinate First Nations kids and effectively commit cultural genocide) and we feel shame; there is no attempt to hand-wave or justify what was done. It was shit and we did that and it was wrong and fuck. All we can do is try and be better. That same pattern happens with a lot of things; it's not that we're perfect (we're not), but we're able to see where we did something terrible, admit it was terrible, and try and make it better.

Meanwhile, Trump was claiming COVID-19 was a Democrat hoax and taking actions to get tens of thousands of Americans sick, and neither he nor Republicans are ever going to admit that was wrong, even though we have literal video record of Trump saying that.

I think if there was any one thing to point towards, it's that - a lack of national humility when we've fucked something up. The United States seems to have something fundamentally wrong with it, where some parts of the country cannot admit to being wrong, nor admit that past mistakes were made. And at some level, that "problem" exists on both sides of the political spectrum.

There's a specific reason this impulse to not self-examine exists, and it largely has to do with the contradiction inherent in the US' founding.

Say it with me, kids: No colonial nation, regardless of intent, can ever truly be conceived in liberty.

Self-examination would reveal the lies upon lies that have been constructed about America's past in order to sanitise it. And let's not even get into the reticence to acknowledge the clear villains in the Civil War because..."we don't question each others' motives" or some nonsense that was devised to end Reconstruction.

They felt so much shame they re elected a man who multiple times donned black face. "but we're able to see where we did something terrible, admit it was terrible, and try and make it better." What did he learn and how did he makes things better for black people?

Erm...those stories came out in 2019, and there has not since been an election that I'm aware of.

I agree with your point about self examination - but how is that syncing up with the part in bold? I have heard that before, but I'm not following the link you're making. Are you saying that the story we tell ourselves about how our nation was formed (or any nation formed) doesn't match with the reality in which it happened (which is true, just to be clear - especially in the case of the United States), and therefore any colonial nation cannot....

I'm saying that colonialism is inherently antithetical to the idea of a liberal democracy because European colonialism is inherently illiberal. And the US is nothing if not a post-colonial empire.

This also applies to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, et cetera though to varying degrees. The success to which postcolonial countries have managed to reform into something more humane is directly related to their level of cultural self-examination.

Going to put this here, because for some unknown reason people on this board have a hard time understanding facts unless you link them. I do not know what these facts say or the dates on them, I could be wrong, but maybe look for facts online or maybe post a link that shows you are correct. All I have are these links. They are all from October 2019. I chose multiple because I know how you guys are in need of links because you have trouble finding them. These were just the top 4 cursory glance, I may have to delve deeper if you want more, but I probably won't do that for you. Feel free to link me what you find since these are pretty unremarkable. I know you guys have problems with certain sources, I hope the guardian, bbc, cnn and usatoday are left leaning enough to fulfill your desire to have correct facts brought to your attention. If these are insufficient, again feel free to disprove them.
