Payroll tax is problematic. SS and Medicare are already suffering financially because a lot of people are out of work which reduced contributions into the funds. Temporary payroll tax reduction or elimination will just make the problem worse.

That's one of the political chips on the table that I doubt will make the final draft. Neither side seem interested. They're just punting that down in favor of money for the unemployed. And the pressure this week keeps building.

I'm guessing between now and November that Trump will manage to alienate some of his potential voters because he screws up in one specific way.

Update; Mnuchin says GOP has 'fundamental' deal on $1T coronavirus relief package:
The proposal will mirror a March stimulus bill that included a one-time $1,200 stimulus check for Americans making up to $75,000 annually, according to Mnuchin.

The White House and Senate Republicans have agreed to provide $105 billion for schools, part of which will be tied to the schools holding in-person classes.

The measure won’t include the payroll tax cut fiercely supported by Trump. The president blamed Democratic opposition for its removal, but there were deep concerns about it among Republicans, too.
