    How to be nocturnal?

I sleep during the day, so I can’t work. Most people work 9 to 5, so they sleep accordingly. Anyone else nocturnal? How do you get by?

There are night jobs. Hotel's, working freight at any big store, security etc. They're not really great work though.

As someone who is required to a nightshift x amount of times month...uh you can certainly work at night. Some places even pay more if you're willing to work 3rd shift. Tech and healthcare are full of night jobs. Lots of blue-collar jobs have night work. Easier to logistics, inventory, stocking at night.

As automation increases, a lot work that requires human attention is shifting earlier or later than the typical 9-5 workday.

At my worst, I would go to work at 8am until 5pm, I slept 2h after work, then stayed until 2-3am, repeated the cycle.
    It was shit.
Now I go on caffeine pills instead. Pop one in the morning, pop one around 3pm and I'm good to go until 11pm.

Humans aren't nocturnal. That's not preventing you from getting a normal daytime job if that's your question. Reset your sleep schedule and stop spending time at your computer late at night. If you insist on maintaning your atypical sleep routine that's fine, but your job choices are simply going to be a lot more limited.

Humans are by nature, not nocturnal. Some people, who are not in the great majority, prefer working, spending time awake all night because they want to or enjoy a job they have which is a grave yard shift. But their bodies prefer sleeping at night if the truth where to be known.

I have worked at night on several occasions in the past and I always hated it with a passion. I never got use to it. I have known people who worked the night shift for decades and said they much preferred it. I think the truth was, they got a 10% bonus to their wages working on the grave yard shift and that was the real motivator for liking it. :P

At one point I had a job which I started at 3AM Wed-Sun. It was a living hell.

I am absolutely not a 'night owl'. Circa 8PM and I am winding down for bed.

See a sleep specialist if you are having trouble adjusting to a normal sleep schedule.

    I work a 2nd shift...I sleep late...and have difficulty sleeping "normal" hours.
And when the occasion calls for me to work the 9-5 shift...I'm always late. (I can't see how normal folks do that..)

I work the 10pm-6am shift. come home sleep 7-1ish. then I have the full day of sunshine, quiet and peace to myself to get things done while everyone else is trapped in office buildings.

You can easily work night shift and still have plenty of day time hours to be less vampireish

Have a job with day and night shifts, was fine for years.
Now i start to get health issues tho, sleep disorder, muscle pains, headache and dizziness.

Its good money most of the time to work at night but on the long run i would not recommend it you might get issues after a few years.

How do you live if you 'can't work'?

Are you saying you are unemployed because you like to sleep during the day?

Not getting 6-8 hours a sleep every night will kill you much faster, it will cause a major brain disease far earlier in life. It is not even a chance but a guarantee based on the research.

Maybe you should ask how to be diurnal instead.

Post clips of you playing your guitar naked on Tumblr and post a 'beg for money' link. I'm sure you'll get by.

I think people severely underestimate the effects and importance of sleep, or lack of it. People think if they don't feel tired after getting a regular 5 hours sleep every night or such then they are ok. When in fact, it can have many effects and cause issues that they don't recognise straight away and put down to something else.

I have heard it suggested that a lack of sleep over a period of time is just as bad for you as smoking. Even if you feel ok, most people are not ok. I think it was Matt Walker, who wrote a book on it, saw him on Joe Rogan, made a very powerful case for sleep.

Yeah, for sure. It can be very detrimental to mental health, mood, pretty much everything. I always try to get a good amount due to this and I can definitely notice the difference when I get a few days of regular good quality sleep compared to having some rough nights.
