    Oklahoma Passes Obamacar

This is big news. In a state that Trump won by 30%:
    • won with 50.5 of the vote
    • 200,000 citizens get healthcare
    • It was enshrined in the state constitution

Oklahoma voters approve Medicaid expansion as coronavirus cases climb
The state is the first to expand Medicaid during the pandemic.

Oklahoma voters on Tuesday narrowly approved a ballot measure to extend Medicaid to tens of thousands of poor adults, making their state the first to expand government-backed health insurance during the pandemic.

The vote, which passed with 50.5 percent support, also throws a wrench in the Trump administration’s plan to make Oklahoma the first state to receive its permission to cap Medicaid spending, a longtime goal of conservatives hoping to constrain the safety-net entitlement program.

Oklahoma has become the fifth state where voters defied Republican leaders to expand Medicaid through the ballot. Missouri will hold a similar vote on Medicaid expansion later this summer.

Republicans keep using the courts to go after the ACA because their own core ideas about healthcare — i.e. most people who have insurance should either have worse insurance or no insurance, and people with no insurance should go fuck themselves — have virtually no mass constituency, and can’t win even in off-term elections with overwhelmingly Republican electorates.
Welcome to GEN-OT, have a seat, we'll introduce you to the 23-year-old who will lecture you about how Democrats didn't try hard enough to improve the ACA, and once that's all set up you'll be assigned a socialist who supported Ron Paul up to 2015 to harass you forever.

Obamacar? Does it only turn left?

But seriously. Good news for Oklahomans.

It’s too bad Trump is seeking to end this via SCOTUS. People are going to need to vote to have any hope of saving it.

Would that work though, because the reason why the Trump administration thinks, Obamacare can be repealed, is clearly a violation of the spirit of a law, and based on interpretation of a lawyer's dodge.

One has to wonder who do republicans care about.

Clearly they do not care about their constituents, who overall like ACA, want gun control laws, want police reform.

Yet their representatives fight against all these things and convince them they don't need it...

Often it feels like the left sees a problem, comes up with a solution and that's it.

The right sees a problem, agrees with the left's need for a solution, may actually agree with the solution, will vote for a person against said solution, will then fight against said solution, yet when polled will agree with solution... and it isn't until they are gravely affected by their attack against the thing they also supported that they will change.

If, and this is a big IF, Biden wins in Nov and the Senate flips AND the House stays blue, I would imagine a beefed up version of the ACA or a M4A-lite will be one of the first pieces of legislation off the block. Especially as the Coronavirus will still be surging through the country in Phase 2.

That's because they don't see themselves as living off of the system. They just need some temporary help so they can get back to the perpetual boot strap pulling up.

Yeah, unfortunately this is it. When THEY do it it is for legitimate reasons that everyone can understand and it's completely okay. It's only everyone else that is abusing the system and must be punished for it. I would not be surprised if these very same people will still support the destruction of the ACA entirely.

Wow they just barely voted for their own self interest. well done. Nice to see the legislative who hate this have to actually help people in their state.

Because there are two very aggressive minorities that make those reps worry:
1 - The boot strap crowd who are big enough to primary those reps. (Note: Only white people are allowed to boot strap, everyone else gets the Tulsa treatment)
2 - The rich assholes who bankroll them.

I wouldn't overstate this particular victory. It was a pretty thin margin. There's a minority of GOP voters who this time decided they would be ok with some government spending even if that spending went to minorities.

umm, you have this half ass backwards.

They are not living off the system, they are getting benefits that they help pay for every year when they need it. They are living off their own money.
Problem is people need it each year, every month, every day not just during some pandemic.

OK is a "taker" state. they have been living "off the system" now for decades on top of decades, getting back multiples for what they pay into the system.
They were just too prideful to admit they were wrong about the ACA and now they are asking for help.

Just like the tens of thousands of people who are now signing up for subsidized ACA coverage who before voted against and hated "Obamacare" because Trump told them they should hate it.

it was all fine and dandy when it was just the poor and minorities suffering. Now the middle class and non minorities are suffering they push ACA Medicaid expansion through. How nice of them.

Trump's trying to end Obamacare but there's emerging evidence it could undo him

Six days after President Donald Trump's administration asked the Supreme Court to overturn Obamacare, voters in deeply red Oklahoma effectively voted to embrace the law by adopting its Medicaid expansion.

The narrow victory for Obamacare came in a state that Trump won by 36 points in 2016, highlighting a growing gap between the president and his own base on health care as he asks Americans to give him four more years. The tension comes as anxieties are rising amid a coronavirus resurgence that has forced some states to pause or roll back the reopening.

Oklahomans joined voters in other red states like Utah, Nebraska and Idaho in expanding Medicaid under the 2010 law, which the Supreme Court made optional. Trump does not appear in any danger of losing these states on Nov. 3, but Democrats intend to weaponize the issue elsewhere — in battleground states.

For Trump, health care could go from being a vulnerability to a fatal political wound. It was the top issue for voters in the 2018 elections and those who cited it preferred Democratic candidates by 52 points in House races, according to exit polls.

Joe Biden is hoping to replicate that this fall by criticizing Trump's attempts to undo Obamacare's protections for pre-existing conditions and expansion of Medicaid coverage for low-income people.

"He just keeps giving us more ammunition," said Guy Cecil, the chair of the Democratic super PAC Priorities USA.
Trump promised better health coverage, for more people, for less money. He's in court during a lethal outbreak trying to do the opposite. Even FOX News knows voters are disappointed in Trump's attempt to remove what health care they have and replace it with thoughts and prayers. Not only is there no replacement plan known to Trump, there isn't time to make and implement one, either.

The article also points out COBRA, which I'm personally familiar with (sigh...) but many non-Americans aren't. COBRA is effectively a way to keep your job-supplied health care after you lose your job. You just have to pay for it. And the Party of Trump is fighting to end unemployment bonuses, meaning that option will suddenly become unrealistic.
