You think it takes less than 2 years for all the green/red tape, approvals, funding, writing, drawing, voice acting, etc...?
Hillenburg was involved up until the end. He would have not only known about this, but had a hand on it.

I thought they were going to milk the franchise against his posthumous wishes with some sort of "Camp Spongebob" spinoff, did that never happen and they're doing this instead?
Good thing as we all know taking the dumb comic relief support character and making them the main character of their own show always works perfectly.
