What do you imagine your rogue is?

It's a really hard question, - the rogue class can be many things - spy, scout, assassin, bandit, pirate, thief, police, intelligence officer (think CIA, FBI, MI6), gangsters, militia (as opposed to army soldiers), sort like the street smart, individual,

I imagine the class type to be typically, charming, a playboy, rascal - but also light fingered or quick fingered etc

Warriors are more like soldiers and beserkers and barbarians, more heavy duty, to the lighter duty more versatile rogue. It's really harder with the larger concept classes like rogue, warrior in particular, and to a lesser extent hunter. Mage, lock, pala, priest, shaman are all very very specific classes and fields, DHs and DKs even more so.

So I'm struggling, I want to try a void elf rogue, but wondering how I can adapt their fantasy to fit any of the 3 specialisations. I'm wondering what race you play and how you imagine your rogue - do you play a spec based on a fantasy? or just the class allowing the spec to alter based on what's most effective for raids? I do intend on having other rogues, I already have 2 blood elf ones, thinking of develping a Nightborne one and now a void elf one, but struggling to fit it in.

How would you visualise a void elf rogue? Would you have a version for each spec?

Also do you choose yours entirely based on fun? and which one is the most fun for you?

Player characters do things normal inhabitants of Azeroth don't do anyway, why be beholden to racial or class stereotypes?
    A witty saying proves nothing.

I can safely say this is something I've literally never once thought about.

I imagine my Rogue as a Rogue in World of Warcraft, nothing really past that. I'd visualize a Void Elf Rogue as being a Rogue that's a Void Elf... In World of Warcraft. I feel like maybe I'm fundamentally misunderstanding what the question even means. But I feel like it's just a class, there's not really much else to it.

I know, different kinda thread right? Makes a change from the 100s of mechanics details and observations huh.

What is a rogue anyway? Our modern society doesn't use such terms to describe people and there isn' discipline or well known career path that is well defined as rogue.

It can mean so many things.. which is what makes it hard. ~Which of those things do you imagine your rogue is.

Even in wow, though rogue is a class, , no one has a bunch of units labelled Rogue, like they do mages, warriors or priests , even hunters. We can infer spies, intelligence officers, assassins, pirates, brigands etc are rogues, but it in and of itself is more liek a general term, than fixed one.

So what sort of haracter do you think yours is? or do you imagine or play him as? A spy? a swift fingered thief/scallion, low life gangster? inelligennce officer? agent? police? gangaster - and how can it fit your race?

I'm struggling to define void elf rogues - Riftblades - are they used anywhere in BFA? Going into shaodlwands, if i'm going to use this character, the covenant I pick would depend on how I visualise him and i'm struggling to be honest. Maybe examples on how you guys view your rogues on the races you play mighthelp, if you even factored race lore into your decision - or was it purely just racial out put?

Generally true, but those things are within the acceptable constructs of their world, so one would apply. Then there is the matter of new parameters new ventures like the void and void elves open up, how would rogue be defined there? What use? purpose, application? Can other standards have adapatations, I have to look to the void elf lore and theme to extrapolate how a rogue would fit, and I read, mage, hunter, rogue, warrior are the mainrepresentations of the void elves, with obvious priest and warlock extensions though you don't really see any go by the names priest or warlock. They have totally different names for their units which suggests that they have unique versions of each class that have unique functions, purposes and skills/attributes.

Since my rogue is a vulpera and has mog that fits the theme, i always liked to imagine he would be the guy who sneaks into yor camp when you sleep, loots all he can. Then later you will run into him peddling yor stuff back to you saying he found it all in the desert.

Interesting topic. It's funny though, because the Rogue was my first character, and is now my least favorite Class, so I think of Rogues the least, even in my own personal RP and head canon. I only really play Assassination, so I consider my rogues that, Assassins for The Horde or Alliance. Subtlety seems fun but I've never played it, but I always imagined them as ninjas, so I may create one in Shadowlands when I have Asian customization options. Outlaw is by far my least favorite, and ironically it can be the most things; pirate/swashbuckler, bandit, gangster, intelligence militia like you pointed out (cop not so much lol) but I wish Bard was the third spec instead of Outlaw just because a Bard is kind of like an offshoot of rogue; it's a thief and it can also be a musical spellcaster, it would add some variety to kind of a boring class lore-wise.

    Like Rocket Raccoon!

Just don't buy an eyeball from this person's rogue, never know how they snuck it out.

I think I get what you're saying. Like, if you're a human rogue are you a privateer or do you work for Shaw, kinda thing?

If that's what you're getting at, then I always pictured my Void Elf as a pirate. His name was Voidbeard and he had a full pirate transmog along with dual sabers and a parrot companion pet.

Witch shifty eyes no doubt - you thinking that Racoon character from Guardians of the galaxy with a Hans Solo twist? Thanks, that's the sort of response I'm looking for

That is what I'm saying. You more one of those High elf void elves, kinda joining the cause, Hans Solo style, but more interested in smuggling your cargo.

Oh yeah, smuggler, scoundrel, bounty hunter, even merc also can be rogues, although Mercs are probably more warriors than rogues, and bounty hunters might fit hunters better or a hunter/rogue hybrid.

Still I imagined a void elf rogue to be reconaissance based void missions into the void, assassins aiding stormwind and the alliance for more difficult jobs regular rogues would struggle with thanks to their zero detection void portals. It is the outlaw one that is the hardest to fathom - alliance I'm sure would provide plenty of opportunities for assassination work, and i can imagine fiendish void elves mixology of void bolstered poisons.

Could be "buisness" associate, Ethereal style, hping to access new worlds for "oportunities" and that's the motication to study the void, that would fit outlaw.

    I'm wondering if void elf gangas of rogues would be a thing - gangs don't fit elves, although ofc the official version of gangs, is actually police and militia.;

Shadowstalkers, stalking dangerous void entity prey could be a very good application for an outlaw rogue... what do you think? It's more like a hunter, but it's a rogue i.e. melee version - I think outlaw is the spec where rogue meets the hunter class in concepts like a shadowstalker or a bounty hunter.. whereas Bandit/pirate/Merc is where rogue meets warrior in the same spec, especially if you're sword wielding.

Forsake. Or Troll rogue? Could fit a worgen rogue too or a crazy any race rogue. Altho I’m not sure I can envision a mechsgnome doing that.

    Forsaken.

My OG account I role-played a Gnome rogue who was a back alley abortionist named Drsmolhands. Clearly that lasted about a week before my inevitable ban.

So any race can be pretty deviant as long as they are a rogue.

The smol thing becoming a meme was a coincidence this was 2006 or 2007 I made that guy. I was thinking more Swedish ikea style writing because I saw the gnomes as very Norwegian in their influences.

How so? I must admit I never associated gnones with Norwegian. Where do you see the connection? And how did Swedish Ikea style come into play

Fuck. I forgot ninjas. Yes. Rogues are very ninja. Well rogue meets monk.

Shame subtlety only uses daggers though and Shurikens, always think of the sword wielding ninja. But their stealth job is very subtlety rogues. Assassination exemplifies Their killing reputation and outlaw their multi weapon handling skill.

You would never see a ninja in heavy armor, 2H sword or a shield so definitely not warrior.

Wow monks don’t fight with their weapons altho shado pan is the archetype ninja, their vibe doesn’t bleed into the Monk class at all. I guess they are monk/rogue hybrid.

But I would place ninja with a highly trained rogue who has trained in multiple fighting styles, and the lighter weapon and armornstyle is also them

For me my rogue is inextricably linked with his race.

I like to think of him as someone who died for nothing and came back as an Undead.
Full of sadness, regret, anger and hatred he wanders the planes of Azeroth, striking from the shadows as a swordfighting figure.

He answers to nobody, except the one and only True Queen of the Undead.
Sometimes he's doing the right thing and sometimes he isn't, not because he wants power or wealth but merely because he's trying to find a purpose.

On my Horde rogue (currently orc female) I imagine myself as this ruthless, cold-blooded killer. A rogue, a killer, an assassin but also you could say a vindicator. Well trained, deadly soldier of the Horde. Someone who may spare a civilian, or may not. Someone who will not let an alliance go by unharmed. Not an assassin that will poison a drink, or sneak inside the house and slit a throat of the target and go out. Also not an agent that seduces or charms anyone. Silent, quick but brutal and deadly. A killer that would sneak into a house but left everyone dead inside, killed with precise stabs and cuts, a bloody massacre that's monument to my skills and a message to my enemies. I have daggers infused with shadow spells (thanks to our orcish warlocks) and crippling poisons, always wearing dark, leather armor, good for sneaking, good for running and climbing and good for agile combat.

That's a lot of elven rogues.

Given that void elves are just blood elves who bought into a void-based magical philosophy and were shunned until they were picked up by the Alliance, I would play your void elf rogue's fantasy the same as a Blood elf with cool void powers that fights for the good guys.

For anyone reading this, it's not to disparage about 5 countries, but to me it's the same as stereotyping American's as loud, boisterous, brash, etc... Or the old Brit stiff upper lip, it's just how I've seen people from Norwegian countries and most of the people I've met from there haven't changed that.

Other than the easy real life Gnome folklore mainly coming from Norwegian and other northern European countries...

Gnomes are all like to tinker around which we have Lego, Ikea are all known for their quirkiness. Volvo is another example of being an over-engineered brand, all of this lines up with Gnomes in game. Plus all interaction with them is punctuated by their slight introversion which is a stereotypical trait. One of my favorite F1 drivers punctuates this slight awkwardness.

It's F1 feed, so you'll probably have to go to YT, something tells me they don't allow embeds.

But yeah that's pretty much the reasons I equate Gnomes to Norwegian countries. Other than the obvious folklore connection, there are a ton of stereotypical traits they share.

rogue is the hardest class to play. people don't generally help rogues or pay attention to them. ignored mostly.
