The complaints about Captain Marvel are really forced and groundless; all they do is betray an ulterior motive for not approving of the character.

Its pretty clear in the context of the movie that she is a hero before she ever has any powers, and for me at least, that's what counts.


I don't think I posted an unpopular opinion yet, I liked Last Jedi best of the new trilogy, granted I hated Force Awakens and couldn't sit through whatever the last one was called.

My problem with Captain Marvel was the writing and direction of the character. We're often told about things in the world but not shown them, her character arc was flimsy and not put together very well, and unfortunately (imo) she's just not particularly likeable. The movie presents her as having somewhat of a chip on her shoulder, which is fine, but then it doesn't really do much to address it. Her character "flaws" aren't a detriment to her goals (Whatever those were) and as a result, there's no internal conflict. She doesn't have to grow past her flaws to reach those goals, so I had a difficult time relating to her character.

Buffy Season 7 was actually the best.

Her character is far more "worthy" of superhero status than Dr. Strange. She goes through much more of a struggle, and has to literally go against everything she knew to be true to really be heroic. She literally disavows her culture for it.

Adoring Breaking Bad is not an unpopular opinion. It's one of the most loved and most acclaimed shows of the past 20 years heh.

I never got that argument either. I've never been a fan of Captain Marvel, but it has nothing to do with sexism, I just find her obnoxious and unlikable. There are tons of female characters I like a lot, I read a ton of female based comics, but I do NOT like Captain Marvel.

Guessing you are talking about the German Nerkflix series Dark? If so, that's not unpopular at all. Breaking Bad and Dark are both highly praised by critics and fans alike.

Apu is a weird situation, he was "meta offensive". If he were voiced exactly the same by someone of Indian descent he wouldn't be considered offensive. The character himself wasn't offensive in the show, unless you consider hardworking, family centered immigrants offensive.
I agree that he influenced Americans perception of Indians, but that's not the Simpsons or Apu's fault, there were zero, absolutely zero other popular media Indian characters. Apu being on the biggest cultural show of the 90s also meant wide spread dissemination.

But to say he "defined" you as a person of indian descent (or appearance)is completely ridiculous. Maybe as a kid you might catch some heat, but that's part of growing up. But to say that the maturity of the average person you encounter is so low that they see you as a cartoon character is asinine.

The ending of Voltron: Legendary Defender isn't as bad as people claim it to be. The ending made me cry but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It could have benefited from another season or a few extra episodes but it was still enjoyable and was beautifully animated.

While I certainly don't hate all of it (the original GiTS is one of my favorite cyberpunk stories) I broadly dislike the presentation/aesthetic of anime, especially as it relates to female characters. So much of it is obviously male gaze/fan service type shit, and it never fails to disturb me how many female anime characters have the voice of like, a 4 year-old. I'm sorry (no, I'm not), but anyone with a fetish for hypersexualized women that sound like young children needs to be locked the f*** away.

Moving onto the broader subject, the american version of The Office didn't resonate with me at all. I watched most of the first season and found myself hating all but 3 or 4 of the characters. I figured that probably wasn't a good sign.

Oh and Game of Thrones does nothing for me. Roughly a decade of torture-porn capped by a final season of episodes so disastrously terrible and anti-climactic, that not even the show's most ardent fans dare defend them. I fully acknowledge that the show had some good 'slow burn' stories and some iconic characters, but S8 squandered most of them.

the best part of game of thrones was how it dominated tv culture for years and then was SO BAD in the final season it completely disappeared just like that.

Die Another Day was a fine Bond movie. Its opening scene is up there with the best, and the oft-mocked stupid shit in the latter half (magic plastic surgery... invisible car... Halle Berry in general...) is equalled or outdone by stupid shit in prior entries.

Moving onto the broader subject, the american version of The Office didn't resonate with me at all. I watched most of the first season and found myself hating all but 3 or 4 of the characters. I figured that probably wasn't a good sign.

The first season was hot garbage. They just tried to remake the original UK version almost word for word and it did not work at all. It is actually amazing it even got a second season. After that, they took the same premise but went in their own direction and it works way better. If you are interested at all, give it another go and just start with season two. You may like it more.
