WoW is not SWTOR. I played for a bit but had to quit due to time investment limits on my end but from the start it's giving very different vibes about the necessity of socialising and player interaction.

Way more than hundreds, you would need thousands.

ESO has a decent housing system too

I've never cared about player housing, and also do not even remotely understand the appeal of player housing. In the short stint of BDO I did, the only reason I cared about it was the mechanical mini-game of buying up property to use for workers, gathering, crafting, etc. But I never went inside any but one house, which was basically just stacks of alchemy stations. It was purely functional and nothing else, and I'd have preferred not to have to have bothered.

That said, player housing is one of the most requested systems for the game since launch. Due to the overwhelming number of people who want it, I say do it. If it'll make that many people enjoy the game more, I'm not gonna stand in the way of it, even if it's a feature I myself will never use.

That said, it's Blizzard, so they'd probably find some stupid way for me to need to do some kind of weekly house decoration quest in order to get raid quality loot. And that'd piss me right off.

do you truly need a housing system? it serves no real purpose other then a gold sink or just a look what i got type of thing..

It's called a garrison in WoW. You can go into your garrison and role play all day long and you can also invite your friends.

Yeah, that was kind of my point. Housing would be more interesting if it were out in the world, but then it'd need to be limited. There's no way Blizzard would do that, so it would have to be instanced and that just means that barely anyone would ever see anyone else's house.

For sure, SWTOR is a very different game than WoW, especially in the Fallen Empire and Eternal Throne expansions (where much of the content was more akin to a Final Fantasy game).

I also kind of doubt Blizz would actually pull the trigger on player - or even guild - housing because it would require a sizable investment into art assets that, honestly, they have never seemed interested in creating.

But this exactly what happend, you farmed Garrisons with 20 Chars for Millions of Gold and only left it to raid/do apex dailys you had a AH, target dummys and a tade chat in it there was 0 reasons to leave it outside of raids and dailys

SWTOR has a computer you can access to go look at other people's publicly viewable houses. I often roam around other people's houses looking for ideas

But, yes, there is no way they would ever implement limited player housing.

Good housing should always remain PURELY OPTIONAL. No "convenience" items like Auction House or anything like that. Purely your own fun little place, if you are so inclined.
I have one argument with this.. Just one.. Transmog would makes sense there. Id want to have a few armor stands to make my set and then put it on.

Which is why you would make housing completely cosmetic (or nearly so).

There's so much collectables in the game.
Would be awesome to display them, manaquins with tier sets etc.

Blizzard should just make it so player characters can rent one of the upstairs rooms in Goldshire, Darkshire, Brill, etc. Lock the door, make it phased. Everyone that walks in there is phased and can customize that room as their own room.

I ask this as a former player of Asheron's Call, which had player housing (Cottages, Villas, Mansions) that were present in the actual game world and, therefore, limited in number. Once all the houses were gone, no one was able to get them until someone else stopped paying rent and lost their house. Housing in Asheron's Call was for you to show off your quest items, buff items, and a number of mostly uninteresting decorations. Asheron's Call had a lot of fun little knick-knacks that were essentially useless, but also cute (think pets in WoW, but they didn't follow you around). Housing in AC was a great addition because it was limited, so not everyone could have one, and because the loot system in the game didn't follow the expansion cycle that games like WoW have -- pretty much every good item had a time and a place and wasn't rendered useless just because a new expansion was released. Players tended to keep equipment drops long after they were no longer useful to them because they could give them to their alts or to their guildies... and such drops often had sentimental value.

WoW, by contrast, has loot that becomes worthless to you the instant you replace it, which happens with new seasonal tiers or sometimes even during the same tier. Those items are trashed pretty much as soon as they're replaced because they have no sentimental value. Toys in WoW tend to not have in-game art assets, aside from their icon (not exactly something that you can display on the walls of your house). The only thing in-game that I could really see as being useful decoration for a house would be mounts (which would be visible in a stable, obviously) and pets. Most of these, however, are common and uninteresting.

I don't see the point of housing in WoW. Blizzard would have to implement hundreds of housing items that would otherwise never exist just to ensure that players would have something to decorate with and then, who is going to see it? Blizzard obviously isn't going to plunk down a few thousand houses into the game world and make players race to be the first to grab them -- they'd have to have them instanced... and why on Earth would anyone bother checking out your house? WoW is not a game that is very conducive to housing.
First off, major kudos for the Asheron's Call shoutout! I miss that game all the time. I played Thistledown!

Anyways, the idea of Housing being limited and existing in the actual game-world definitely made it ESPECIALLY cool in Asheron's Call! But even with instances housing, it can still be compelling. AC was a ground-breaking MMO, as was its own Housing system, but it really didn't offer much in the way of customization. You could get some cool items, but at the end of the day, the house was going to look however it looked, and you didn't "decorate it" so much as "put a couple of items on the floor".

Virtually (if not literally) every other MMO on the market has a Housing system, so it clearly resonates with people. Maybe not everyone, but definitely enough to matter. While I still consider WildStar to have had the gold standard for a Housing system, fact is that FFXIV's Housing system also adds a lot to the game. Because many players share the same "settlement", it means that hanging out at your house can also be really social and allow you to meet other players. I'm FFXIV player too, and just like a week ago, I saw someone running by and we chatted about cool transmog sets, and then he gave me some advice on playing a Dragoon (a class I don't normally play).

Like I said, the key would be making sure Housing is *ONLY COSMETIC*. The moment you add any sort of "function" to it, it stops being optional and stops being fun.

Why just 1 room? Why not add a house to gold shire?

Trust me, once you start getting into decorating, you will want more and more space

People in WoW are to concerned with what benefits housing will give them similar to guilds after they started giving perks. Also WoW housing would probably be a forgettable shit show where the only decorations would be from instances and quests and turn housing from something like a home you spend hours making beautiful into a man cave where you show off your trophies to boost your epeen.

TL;DR: housing is unnecessary in WoW go play other games that offer it.
