I don't deny there are viable options for the show to explore, I lack confidence we'll see the show go one of those routes.

Only a handful of shows have pulled of revivals after series has "ended" that are reboots/remakes.

I'm just saying that there are reasons to be hopeful. The guy that was in charge of the show at the height of it's quality is coming back. That's not a guarantee of quality...but it's a better situation than it would be if the guy who ran the show for the last 3 seasons were coming back.

This is excellent news. Excellent show that arguably started to go down hill at season 5 of its 8 seasons. The series finale is regarded as one of the worst of all time.

I do hope this makes up for it. I can’t wait.
I kinda stopped watching after the Trinity Killer. The show just seemed to lose steam after that and so I never even made it to its notorious series finale.

GoT was at least set in a fantasy era where incest was used to "protect royal blood". Dexter takes place in a world of relatively modern science, where we know that shit is gonna lead to extra toes, and webbed fingers and all sorts of inbreeding health risks should a kid come of it. Even in the magical world of GoT, not everyone in that world, thought it was normal.

A, they never actually did anything besides one kiss. B, they weren't biologically related. C, of all the problems of the last season that was one of the minor ones IMO.

As for this new season, I don't really have high hopes but if they either Retcon season 8 (And possibly 6/7 as well) or just mostly start fresh they could do something interesting. I was a fan of the show until near the end so I would love if they gave even a slightly better ending to the character and show then what we got.

I still haven't seen the last few episodes of the last season because I really don't want to ruin the rest of the show like GoT did.

What was so terrible about the season finale out of curiosity?

Looking forward to this. Yeah, seasons 1,2 and 4 were awesome, but I still couldn't really hate the seasons afterwards. I was okay with seasons 5 and 6, really liked 7. But the finale was indeed weak.

I still occasionally watch them all and never skip a season. Here is hoping for a great return

Is this asking as somebody who watched it and liked it or never watched Dexter at all? I didn't think it was terrible..it was more like "I wish it was different" - without actually knowing how to end it properly

Dexter acted completely out of character, and then just ran away, essentially.

The whole season was Deb acting out of character, which was, to me, the worst thing of the season. When she covered up for Dexter after finding out who he was, that's when the show really lost the thread of who that character was supposed to be.

Someone who never watched Dexter. Maybe I wouldn't really get it not having an attachment to the show, but was just curious what in particular was so bad about the finale.

Characters acted in the most convenient ways to rush to the end of the plot, basically. I didn't think it was that bad, the ending itself is very appropiate for the character, but they probably could have reached the same destination, with a few different turns.

As for where could they take this extra season, if he became (in)famous, I could see some private detective or another serial killer tracking him down, and him having to wake up his killer instinct to survive.

Well...I guess just like with GoT you have to watch and enjoy the first 7 seasons to know why season 8 didn't work.

Then again, closing a show is always hard. Breaking Bad did a great job. Sopranos at least raised a huge discussion and Lost disappointed fans.

As for Dexter, give season 1 a try...if it is not for you, just drop it and never worry about the finale. All the seasons build up to "What will happen to Dexter in the end" - and what happened was what nobody expected, but not in a satisfying way.

Especially season 2 IMHO showed what you could do with good twists and a WTF ending. Season 8 was not that.

Season 1 was one of the best book adaptations i ever saw and season 2 was one of the worst book adaptations i ever saw... ofc book 2 was super fucked up and it was normal they couldnt show it that way but i lost interest after season 2 and never watched any other season.

Book 2 was about a Surgeon that turned people into grunting potatoes, cut of everything without killing the victim.
Law abiding Citizen copyed his method just with killing the victim.

Hope the episodes are good. The last seasons were awful but the first ones were amazing.

I'd avoid the soft reboot idea. It essentially retreads old ground.

If I were writing this, Dexter would be chafing at not letting his Dark Passenger out, trying to keep himself somewhere isolated enough he has no opportunity. But then he starts getting messages. And it becomes clear by the end of episode 1 that someone knows that Dexter Lumberjack (or whatever he's calling himself) is Dexter Morgan, ex-forensic specialist and serial killer. Do they just want to hunt the best prey there is, as they hunt him back? Or is there something else going on? I don't even know how I'd answer those questions, but it's at least a place to start.

I wouldn't bring anyone else back, though. Not unless I'm planning for more than a single season, at least. Ideally, I'd figure out a way for it to be Deb, but that's SUPER dependent on exactly how things played out and I'd have to re-watch to figure out if that's even possible.

Not in Westeros, it wasn't. That's sort of the entire point; GoT's setting is violently opposed to incest, precisely because the mad Targaryens engaged in it.

I don't think they can bring Deb back. IIRC Dexter stole her dead body from the hospital, threw her overboard and then drove his boat into a close hurricane.

I'm really interested in this extension. I liked the early seasons.

Yeah, it's pretty much I know he thought he'd killed her, but I didn't think he'd dismembered her, so maybe there was a chance, but I knew at best it was a long shot.

If it's not Deb hunting him, I can't think of anyone I'd want to bring back who Dexter hasn't already DEFINITELY killed.

Yeah, LaGuerta or James are the only people I'd want to see hunting Dexter, and they're both definitely fuckin' dead. I suppose Quinn or Batista could be hunting him?

I forget, at the end of s8 was it pretty inevitable the truth was gonna come out about Dexter? Or did he escape cleanly? Quinn always suspected him of something, I know.
