none of you would have ever noticed any of this if wowhead hadn't made clickbait articles about it; it doesn't affect the game and it doesn't affect you. Blizzard didn't make a big announcement patting themselves on the back for defeating sexism, all the cries of virtue signaling are nonsense

the twin consorts thing didn't add anything to Lei Shen's character, it wasn't delved into or looked at at all because Warcraft has always been comic book pulp fantasy storytelling. The big love rocket was exactly the sort of stupid dick joke that arises from having a frat boy culture like the one described in the lawsuit

but again, people whining about this never cared about the sexual harassment lawsuit, they just wanted to use it as ammo for "blizz bad they ruined my game " so as soon as anyone starts doing anything to improve the situation in a way that might impact you personally you've started screeching about them changing it

    again, self-centered children

I mean Blizz self-admits that they will do things because Datamining will put eyes on it. They absolutely made these changes knowing that Wowhead & Co would pick up on it and write an article on it. Thus getting people to talk about "is Blizzard going too far in censoring the game" instead of "Why hasn't Bobby Kotick been forced to step down as President yet?"

It is insignificant compared to some of the other issues the game has, but it is also indicative. If these changes are to bring the game in with the WoW team's current line of thinking, we can then look at these changes to see where they might go in the game's future as well as for the culture of the office.

For the game piece, let's say for instance that the next expansion is a Dragon Isles expansion. Given that this is a dev team that seems to dislike using the word "Consort" or showing women partially clothed in paintings, one can see several ways that the Dragon Aspects themselves will likely be changed. Alexstrasza's outfit seems likely (and perhaps did even before this), but it is likely that will be far from the only change. Will Keristrasza still be considered Malygos' forced consort? Given that the WoW team wasn't OK with the willing consorts in Throne of Thunder, that seems likely to be washed away. What of the awful actions Alexstrasza was enslaved & forced to create children for the Dragonmaw Orcs? It's brutal & tragic, but an important part of her story. It does not seem like too far of a leap that a company willing to change the backstory of a raid boss leading up to Lei Shen would also work to bury or minimize the horrific deeds done to Alexstrasza.

That's IMO why it's important. Each individual act of censorship in itself is probably eyeroll-worthy at best. But together they tell a story, & that story paints a bit of a Flanders-style WoW to come.

I think the only reason there are so many adults playing WoW is because they just never left after starting in teens or early 20's when it was new.
They did surveys in 2005/6 about the age of wow players and they estimated the average age to be well into the twenties. You can bet your ass that the current demographic is way closer to 40 than to 20, because the game is not exactly a magnet for kids.

Also being badly written does not mean it's aimed at kids, go home with that shit. That is the excuse of this generation's hack-fraud writers that can't even ape the cheese of the 80s without tripping and falling flat on their faces. Not to mention kids franchises are famously peppered with adult humor.. yes, even disney has inuendos in their movies.

To top it off, most kids these days have their first contact with mmos and rpgs when they play extremely predatory rubbish on their phone. Someone calling Sylvanas bitch in a zone that most people probably skip anyway nowadays is not going to poison their minds..

Kids these days have access to hardcore porn with a single move of their thumbs. Thinking that "bitch" will do something to them is laughable.

Somehow a game this old still warranted a remaster in 2020, and that remaster "required" bringing its lines "to modern standards".
We are also talking specifically about the same character.

And the game became a shit show of a remaster and one of the worst games of the year that Blizz wants to forget about. As everybody else already did.

Just wanna quote this because it's exactly my line of thinking. I don't mind these types of changes much individually, but the trend they set and what that could mean for the game moving forward is what's concerning.

Since this is a speculation thread how about a crackpot theory of the Blizzard felating kind: They changed the Twin Consorts' name and description because they want to make them a playable race in the future.

I find it really weird that 9.1.5 adds really nothing to the Shadowlands story and everything is in limbo until 9.2. Not even a 20 minute questline / scenario dealing with the aftermath of Sanctum / Sylvanas? I mean they wrapped up the entire faction war of BfA in 8.2.5 in a 30 minute (or less) scenario.

9.1.5 is just a systems patch that finally brings Shadowlands out from Early Access and makes the game systems playable.

  16. #7576
In 8.2.5 they wanted to wrap up war story/clear field before moving to full N'zoth arc. Also they had prepared CGI cinematic, without it 9.2.5 chapter would be pretty shitty. In 9.1.5 there is no need for that, 9.2 could as well start with Primus reforging final key and opening portal.

In 9.1.5 their main goal is to encourage players to explore rest of SL content (alts, other covenants) and some old content (islands, Legion raids) while they're cooking 9.2. Legion timewalking will be just first 2 weeks, so it serve both as sub bait and evergreen addition to game.

It doesnt look good for more plot, but it isnt completely unthinkable that whatever quest or three with Sylvanas is hidden on the PTR. Not a big or even that likely chance, but still.

This patch seems very much like the kinds of patches we get when the drought is really kicking in and Blizzard is less interested in keeping players active raiding or such, but rather content to just scour the last bits of content from the game.
I am actually kind of surprised we got this patch so early, usually I would expect stuff like this to be literally the last patch the expansion has, from that time when the intent behind the systems are long since irrelevant, and content can be changed to be designed for players that join the expansions after and only want a few select things hidden behind systems that would normally be designed to take ages to promote gameplay.
The world revamp dream will never die!

I suppose they don't use .5 patches as story developments anymore.. I find it odd as well because right now we are waiting for 9.2 to move anything forward.....

Wrathin comes back? Dragon expansion clearly!
LK part of a quest? Wotlk 2 clearly!
Sylvanas working with a death master? Shadowlands clearly!

At the point we're headed for Wrath of the Shdowlands Dragon Isles Lich and tinkers.

My guess is that 9.1.5 was never planned in this form. When the lawsuit stuff and mass exodus news broke some people with supposed connections to Blizzard spoke about their willingness to put in a reconcilliation patch, which then was announced 1-2 weeks later in the form of 9.1.5. So I'm not too surprised to see this patch being light on story. Blizzard practically tells the key points of the story exclusively through cinematics and I've had the feeling in SL beta already that they are lagging behind with their cinematic production. So most likely even if they wanted to tell some story, with their current way of dealing with story they simply can't. The patch is pretty much just working down the wish list of the playerbase at large and they've thrown everything easy in it (well and some last minute desperate white-washing).

The funny thing about this theory is, 9.0.5 basically had the same reasoning as 9.1.5 then. Sure, the upcoming lawsuit wasn't known back then, but 9.0.5 served the same purpose as 9.1.5. And we know they did not plan to have 9.0.5 either and it came out of nowhere.
