Even if the results are due to review bombing, the existing of the review bombing for some expansions and not for others is something that needs explaining. It's not valid to dismiss negative reviews because you somehow think that this time they are illegitimate.

SL's score has been declining. It will be interesting to see if it falls below that of BfA by the time the expansion is over.

It has 2000 ratings. Game sold 3.700.000 with pre-orders alone, who knows how many more next whole year. How people use Metacritic user score as argument is beyond me.

And look at negative reviews. 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2. No, no review bombing at all.

Note that this is not how the leak exactly happened. It was on Gamespress, but initially only through the search functionality, it being posted on the main page happened afterwards.

You also have to see though that back then reviewbombin wasn't as much of a thing as it is now.

Searching for relevant terms (or even Shadowlands) would show assets that shouldn't actually be available yet. e.g https://blizzard.gamespress.com/Sear...ext=awakenings could start showing results (that aren't Hearthstone) if Awakenings was a thing and they haven't fixed the issue yet (which I assume they have).

Hell, Legion is among many people's favorite expansion for many reasons. Hell, its AP system was easily the most developed system in this game so far, and that's crazy. Outside of 7.2's issues (Which honestly isn't too crazy, considering Mage Tower had LOTS of replayability factors, and SL itself is bringing back stuff from Legion cause people liked it so much), the expansion itself was great. Antorus is prolly in my Top 3 favorite raids in all of WoW history, simply due to its visually cool aesthetic and lore importance.

Hell even at blizzcon they had stuff to show for. The paladin ashbringer talent tree was done and loaded in for the longest time they said and it was true.. it was funtional. But lets not forget that the artifact or ap system was new.. when you do the same system 3 times in a row then ye.. you will likely get some backlash. Same as vanilla wow.. it was great because it was new. They overdid the borrowed power system and it hit them back.. own fault.

Legion did many things right , with that said.. both bfa and sl had pretty much nothing to show for.. even back then I wondered like oo we might see the new features later, but that was it.

Pretending that review-bombing doesn't happen isn't a very good look. Sorry.

But that doesn't even have to be the only explanation for why WoW expansions are poorly rated, given how much pleasure WoW players take in constantly whining about the game.

It does make me wish no one had noticed (or Blizzard never pushed into the open) the ptr change. Anticipating an announcement you have no idea is actually coming...kinda sucks.

No, anyone that thinks that is legitimate is ridiculous. BfA is a MUCH better expansion than Shadowlands.

I think using MetaCritic is a ridiculous metric when you can literally log in and see people aren't enjoying in the game. Go look at how many guilds have died since 9.0 compared to other expansion. Go look at server populations. Go look at google activity surrounding WoW. Go look at trends on things like Twitter. Go look at roster turnover in active guilds. ALL of these things are indicative of the game's population struggling.

Is X expansion better or worse than Y expansion is an irrelevant conversation. You can literally see people rejecting Shadowlands in numbers that, off the top of my head, do we know are better or worse than BfA? Probably not. I can tell you guild recruitment is MUCH harder right now than it ever was during BfA. Is that an indictment of Shadowlands or the current tier? I don't know. People spoke pretty miserably about Eternal Palace & the essence grind, but we had less roster turnover and more people applying in spite of us having a pretty healthy roster in 8.2 than we have had throughout all of 9.1 and have seen no improvement yet in 9.1.5.

Maybe in a vacuum shadowlands isn't bad, maybe it's just because it's 2 "bad" expansion in a row that Shadowlands is catching the brunt of people having higher expectations for it after BfA. I know for me personally, Shadowlands has managed to disappoint on every front: the dungeons haven't held up in enjoyment, Sanctum is one of my least favorite raids of all time (Nathria was very good outside of SLG though), class design is as weak as it's ever been, there's a bunch of frustrating systems, narratively Shadowlands is frankly awful and is certainly my least favorite expansion in that regard. I think the biggest disappointment for me from Shadowlands is actually Torghast. It is what I was most looking forward to and it's the thing I dread doing the most every week, even more than Korthia.

Now that being said, I'm in the group that has stepped away from the game at least until 9.2 if not 10.0. I'm still active with my guild in discord, still helping them out in terms of recruiting and all of that, but I have no interest in actually playing the game as it stands.
