Is it really a U turn?

    There was no formal announcement.
It' was a leak from the beltway gossip mill from a "democratic insider".

These are the same people that according to "democratic insiders"
    • Biden would choose Nina Turner or Karen Bass for VP
    • Biden would cut social security
    • Biden would appoint Rahm Emanuel as Secretary of State
    • Biden would appoint Rahm Emanuel as Secretary of Treasury
    • Please someone call Rahm... he has one friend in the Beltway press, but no friends in the Biden Administration

If anything, the beltway has little to no inside source in the current admin. Which is shocking for the press, when previously everyone from Ivanka to the coffee boy was leaking to the press. Everyone was also prepping for a book deal.

So basically the press misunderstood or willfully mischaracterized the the Biden. Released it really early for maximum scoop effect.

I'm just shocked I have to explain Manufacturing Consent to biggest Chomsky fans on MMOC.

Snark aside, point is people who care or pretend to care about immigration, probably dont know how it polls (not as well as they wish.) Or how it works out in the real world electorate.
Look at the Trump thread. How many immigrants or guys with immigrant wives voted for Trump. Then act all shocked when Trump started deporting their family.

Selling a pro immigration policy is going to be hard work. The GOP hast a 12 year head start framing it negatively. Faster than Mitt Romney can say "self deport".
Rupert Murdoch has had like a 40 year head start.

They are saying it’s not a u turn, because the policy was not released. But, public opinion is pretty clear that we don’t trust Biden on immigration. What ever policy he might have on 15th, people don’t trust that it will be drastically different from Trump. The problem for Biden, is that it is easy to believe to be his policy...

Although, like I said... I still think he will try to balance appealing to or at least not ruffling feathers of Trump supporters.

Pro-Trump lawmakers form caucus promoting 'Anglo-Saxon political traditions
    https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5...cal-traditions

Several House Republicans, led by Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.), are forming a caucus that calls for a "common respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions."
A policy platform for the group, which calls itself the America First Caucus, declares that "a certain intellectual boldness is needed" in order to "follow in President Trump’s footsteps, and potentially step on some toes and sacrifice sacred cows for the good of the American nation."
Woah! They just said eff it, let's go full white nationalism.

Now the Trumpers will likely say 'what's wrong with this' and even cry reverse racism. Only problem is the example of African Americans never had the power and faced racism by white.

No doubt where they are going with this.

Sure, but on immigration it self, Biden isn’t doing too good... in fact, if it weren’t for what you listed, I think he would be in more trouble, due to what’s going on at the border.

THere's no direct announcement on refugees cap. Only CNN's characterization that an emergency declaration was somehow final policy.

Fun watching you carry water for CNN. You and Chris Cillizza can sing "Dems in Dissary is the Only Way".

Only America has agency, but in America, only the Dem's have agency. Murc's Law.

Like I said before, within the past few months, they ran a single sourced story without doing the work of confirmation.

Because CNN ain't that great at linking to other stores - https://www.reuters.com/world/americ...al-2021-04-16/

He signed it, got called across the board, and Psaki had to do the, "But wait, there's more!" dance.

Either this was planned all along and was a magnificent failure of communications in the rollout, or Biden was hoping that this wouldn't get as much attention for some reason. Maybe to do it later, maybe to wait until the next fiscal, who knows.

Either way, I'm glad to see that there is no meaningful "Cult of Biden" and his own party isn't afraid to light him the fuck up when he appears to be flagrantly breaking a campaign promise and doing something that appears quite Trumpian.

Because it was an emergency order that lifted restrictions from Countries of Origin.

Ya terrible communication. Biden should have explicitly mentioned that Refugee cap numbers would be addressed later.

Biden had no way of knowing that Just Us Democrats and CNN would twist the story. Who would then send it to Reddit and Chapo Twitter. Then their fans would bring it to b level gaming forums.

The emergency decree also didnt include any mention of infrastructure, so I guess that's canceled as well....

It's the classic "Dems are bad at messaging", but ignore all of the hostile people who own most of the messaging.

Can't disagree with this enough, because of course this would be how it played out across the board. It was a predictable response and a terribly stupid move.

Sorry I missed the sarcasm tag. I thought it was obvious. Because its the fallacy of Omission.

This is where getting a confirmation source would have cleared things up. Confirmation the thing we imagine reporters do.

This tweet came out at the peak of the outrage and it got the zero engagement from CNN.

    /Jen Psaki voice:
This is just the beginning. This step lifts the restrictions put in place by prior Administration on where refugees can come from. We need to rebuild resettlement program and we are committed to continuing to increase refugee numbers.

But its Friday, bored media doesnt really want to do work.

Given your posting style and slant, it absolutely was not remotely obvious.

Official messaging shouldn't come via Twitter, this isn't the Trump administration. (realized I misread the tweet and snipped that bit out)

This was an unforced error/own goal for the Biden administration. Glad they're cleaning it up, but there's no defending this rollout.

It’s also why pressing the administration, whether it’s “your guy” or not is important.

Trump worshippers who believe in his infallibility are more of a problem than just the fact they worship Trump. It’s that they worship anyone who is therefore infallible.

shows why voting, even if your preferred didn't get through the primary, matters

if Trump was still in office, there would be no backtrack, there would be double, tripling down, then escalating

vs Biden, didn't take a day for him to backup.

its the difference between gaining a little at least, or going the completely opposite direction

Precisely. Biden might not be the best thing since sliced bread. But he was an infinitely better choice than Trump, and Trump was the only other option. There was no "abstain from having a president until a better candidate comes along," it was between the two of them.

And while people saying "well if I vote for a third party/don't vote at all I didn't help Trump because I also didn't vote for him" might be true in a total numbers sense, it's been shown, and they themselves admitted as much, that the GOP does better when fewer people vote.

I can believe that the Biden administration can be talked into having a more magnanimous refugee policy and actually consider, on some level, the various implications and logistics of it. Never, in a million years, would I ever have believed that of the Trump administration. If anything, as D Luniz noted, Trump would gone out of his way to make it worse to prove that he's "sufficiently sticking it to the muslim brown people" to appease his voter base.

John Oliver points out, amongst other things, that Biden signed onto and defended the 2005 bankruptcy overhaul law still in effect today. Interestingly enough, the clip chosen (in which Biden debates Warren) has Biden using the argument "Your electric company shouldn't be paying your health care bills".

This is something the ACA was supposed to slow down. Remember, the two support beams holding the ACA up were "everyone has to get health insurance, but health insurance can't kick you for being sick and there's a max amount you're required to pay". Obviously, things have changed a lot since "It's just one person coming over from China". While biden could unilaterally reverse Trump's damage to the first support pillar literally at any moment, maybe while the country is already crippled with extra expenses and lowered income isn't the best time.

He could, and in my opinio should, be heading in that direction, however. There's a lot of Trump supporters out there who need to have their life saved against their will, apparently, because not only did they drop their health care the second they had the option, they also refuse to vaccinate or wear masks. Expansion of benefits from Medicare/Medicaid, or incentives towards ACA plans by income-level-based rebates, would have to flow along with the re-added requirement, so that Bubba Joe Bob Bubba making $30,000 a year on the minimum wage he thinks shouldn't be raised can actually go to the hospital if he breaks a leg. Sure, he might complain about the government running his life, probably while eating a McDonalds hamburger inspected by the USDA while driving on a federal interstate highway system, but when the other option is letting people get sick and die in the streets because you disagree with their political choices, I'll pick with the method in which they survive long enoug to complain before I step over a growing mound of self-inflected dead bodies.
