Well, I was going to say "anyone" but I forgot about Wilson and Eisenhower. Trump almost spent more time golfing that Obama, but Obama actually won a second term.

We know Trump is a liar, in time, over the next 50 years or so, most people will have that memory fade. So just having his fat butt as the picture doesn't convey just how worthless he really was.

Actually having a picture of him looking stupid while intentionally mocking a disabled man, now that is a picture that captures the essence of him where long after he is mostly forgotten, just looking at that picture by those who enter the place will be able to gauge just who he was. Effectively turning his insult into a self-own that will last through the centuries if the US lasts that long.

It isn't Trump "being fat" that gets mocked, it's Trump being fat and claiming to be super healthy and in shape that gets him mocked.

If he weighed 400lbs and his response was "I like food, and I would rather enjoy the stress-relief of a good burger over the anxiety of a salad, given the expectations of the role of President", that would be eminently understandable. But that's not Trump.

I understand that, what I am getting at is that in 50 or 100 years, most people won't remember any of that. And just the picture of the fact fuck won't convey any of it. It would just be, look, this guy was fat. But so was others as well, oh well. They won't know the issues of the guy. Actually going through the halls and looking at the former presidents to come across him, waiving his lip wrist in the air with the slack jawed mouth at his rally, will perfectly convey just who he was, even 100 years from now.

The portraits just flat-out don't matter.

What matters is getting the fuck charged with the crimes he committed.

"Law and Order", lots of places have had that, Russia, North Korea, Saddam's Iraq.

The forgetfulness of the train wreck that was trump is already happening.

For example, its already been pointed out that if Biden didn't make a big deal about a portrait of a seditious, corrupt, twice impeached president who is directly responsible for over 600,000 american deaths, it would be the same kind of petty as Trump not making a big deal about a portrait of a president who is guilty of being kinda liberal and black.

Agreed, but we weren't commenting about that, we were talking about the portrait unveiling, and a portrait that makes him look respectful is a lie, the one that shows him as fat will have the context lost in time, while the one of him mocking people and looking stupid captures his essence perfectly and will show the contrast perfectly with the other portraits.

Frankly, it's the kind of petty bullshit Trump was entirely in favor of. Stooping to his level ends up justifying conduct on that level.

I don't care about his portrait. I care about meaningful consequences. Which remain to be seen.

Karzai tells everyone that the USA is leaving Afghanistan a complete disaster.

"Wait, why aren't you blaming Trump for the last four years? Biden's only had five months."

Well, Biden's doing the current withdrawl. And Karzai said all 20 years sucked donkey balls.

"Wait, does he want the US to stay?"

No. He's still completely okay with the US leaving. I mean, after 20 years of making things worse, you'd want the US to leave.

The [US/NATO military] campaign was not against extremism or terrorism, the campaign was more against Afghan villages and hopes; putting Afghan people in prisons, creating prisons in our own country and bombing all villages. That was very wrong.
I find it hard to dispute this. I was in favor of invading Afghanistan, the Taliban did everything in their power to protect Osama bin Laden. (And it's not like they were good people, either) Keeping the country for ourselves? Nearly every single step went wrong. We gave them a blue (= Israeli) flag, for fuck's sake. Maybe there is no right answer here, but it feels like we went looking by testing every single possible wrong answer in alphabetical order.

Let us all breathe a sigh of relief that one of the biggest shitstains in America's underpants is finally being thrown out.

Not Biden, but those damned Democrats in CA are gonna cover past-due rent for folks who couldn't pay during the pandemic. Weird that while Republican governors are cutting the additional federal unemployment assistance, you see a Democratic governor/legislature stepping up and continuing to help people who have and still struggle with finances during the pandemic.

A U.S. Senate committee’s vote on the repeal of the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force that allowed the war in Iraq was delayed for at least a day, as five Republicans on Monday requested a public hearing and classified briefing.

The Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee had planned to debate and vote on the repeal of the AUMF on Wednesday, but it was put off after five members - Senators Mitt Romney, Mike Rounds, Marco Rubio, Ron Johnson and Bill Hagerty - requested a delay.

"We should fully evaluate the conditions on the ground, the implications of repealing the 2002 AUMF for our friends, and how adversaries—including ISIS and Iranian backed militia groups—would react," they said in a letter.
Well that was unexpected, Republicans won't let the bill to rescind the 2002 AUMF out of Committee in the Senate. I get that Republicans like having a strong executive branch with more power than the Constitution ever intended, but I thought they'd be hot to jump on any chance to take away some power/authority from Biden.

I thought we already "beat ISIS" though? And what Iranian backed militia groups pose a threat to the US, or our troops stationed in friendly countries in the ME?

I think they are actually being more forward thinking on this one, but not in a good way.

They know that if it’s removed, getting it passed again will be near impossible and then when they get a president they want in, he won’t be able to bypass congress to wage war. And that can cost them donors as well, so a double loss for them in the long run given what they support.

Yeah, and it puts members of Congress "at risk" of voting for a bad military action that threatens their re-election. It's been a pretty sweet deal the past few decades to say, "Well we didn't do that, and we can't do anything to stop it since everyone else doesn't want to rescind the AUMF! Don't get mad at me, get mad at POTUS and OTHERPOLITICALPARTY!". It affects both political parties here, and I just hope that now that it's passed the House it won't die in the Senate. I've been wanting that shit rescinded for ages now, it was terrible to begin with and the longer it has been in place the dumber/worse it is.

Watch them filibuster THIS, then watch the pressure really mount on Manchin.

I don't think they will, it's a bad look for them. Gumming it up in committee and other procedural tactics gives them cover to say, "We're just living up to our conservative branding and taking time to fully analyze and evaluate the situation. Move slowly and carefully, not quickly and recklessly!", whereas actually using the filibuster is more likely difficult for them to defend (especially since they're filibustering something that would take power away from Biden, and their cultish base is hardly as forward-thinking as they might be in Committee).

It's one reason I like this so much. Republicans don't really have a great/popular argument for not rescinding the AUMF.

Man, some of these think pieces are bad. WashPo has an op-ed about how Manchin is some secret mastermind for getting Republicans to reject his stripped-down voting rights proposal, that was largely what Republicans claimed they wanted in a bill and omitted the parts Republicans objected to most (like same-day registration). And that he got them to reject it is some super sly and sneaky political win that totes matters!

Ignoring that anyone paying attention knows that Republicans won't back any election reform at all and that it's all just bullshit, and that Republican voters don't care one way or the other because most of them don't even understand the issue beyond, "VOTER FRAUD IS REAL(tm)!!!". It doesn't matter, it won't change any minds for voters or for members of Congress who should all know this very well by now.

IF he then used this as impetus and reason to vote for HR1, then I'd be very slightly inclined to agree with their assessment. But he won't, so no, as you said, the op-ed is garbage.
