You know, Ben and I have been doing this our whole careers, it seems. And it’s just — it’s sick. You know, we’re still gathering the facts of what happened and why. And we do know that, as of now, there are a number of people who are not going to — did not make it, including children.

And it’s heartbreaking. A family’s worst nightmare.

And I want to commend the police who repo- — responded incredibly swiftly — within minutes — to end the danger.

We’re monitoring the situation really closely — Ben, as you know — and we have to do more to stop gun violence. It’s ripping our communities apart, ripping the soul of this nation — ripping at the very soul of the nation. And we — we have to do more to protect our schools so they aren’t turned into prisons.

You know, the shooter in this situation reportedly had two assault weapons and a pistol — two AK-47. So I call on Congress, again, to pass my assault weapons ban. It’s about time that we begin to make some more progress.

But there’s more to learn. But I just wanted to send my concern and hearts out to so many parents out there. I’ve been to so many of these sites, as Ben knows, by — virtually every one.

And one of the things you folks should — I know you do know, but you should focus on — you know, just like when — in the military — when my son was in Iraq for a year, other places, you — there’s so many members of the military coming back with post-traumatic stress after witnessing the violence and participating in it.

Well, these children, these teachers, they should be — should be focusing on their mental health, as well.

And so I’m grateful — anyway, sorry to start off that way, but I couldn’t begin without acknowledging what happened. And now I’m grateful that all of you are joining us here today.

Nashville, Tennessee shooting response
Following Monday’s shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, tensions ran high among state lawmakers meeting across town in the state Capitol. Democrats called for action on gun control — and got their microphones cut off by Republican leadership for criticizing their GOP colleagues’ love of the Second Amendment.

“Prayers are good, but faith without works is dead,” Democratic state Sen. Raumesh Akbari implored with a biblical reference. “Let’s not let another preventable tragedy unfold without this legislature taking real action.”

Any action from Republican lawmakers, however, is more likely to move in a different direction. Republicans this year have introduced bills that would make it easier to arm teachers and allow college students to carry weapons on campus.

On the same day as the Nashville shooting, a federal judge approved a legal settlement lowering the minimum age to carry handguns without a permit in Tennessee from 21 to 18. That came just two years after a new law set the age at 21.

-How many teachers have you ever seen have a pure mental breakdown in the middle of class from kids messing around? You want them armed in that state?

-How many of those teachers would be willing to shoot another person without hesitating at which point they are really just more guns and ammo for the attacker?
--Lets assume they all are willing to shoot when the time comes.

-How many of them will be trained and proficient in using their gun and have a good enough shot they aren't likely to miss and hit another student themselves?
--Lets assume the teachers are actually put through class and target practice as part of the school funding (Not getting into how the school could afford that funding)

-How many teachers do you think will be willing get armed and trained and be willing to deal with children who can't listen, keep their guns safe from 1,000+ kids with HUNDREDS of them trying to get to any of their guns they can, be willing to shoot and kill an attacker and all that on a teachers salary?
--Yeah, there isn't any way to assume this one would resolve without some major restructuring in how schools work and how much teachers are paid and trained.

Sad thing is I feel bad for my nieces, their dad let them drop out of school and go to "Online Only" classes where they can cheat their way through it all and he doesn't really care about what they know so long as they have the paperwork to pretend they do. I honestly think that any employer worth crap, will not give online degrees any weight in the near future because you won't be able to tell if they used google or brainly to cheat or got someone else to do their work for them. And also ignores that schools generally need to have liability insurance and I'm fairly certain that insurance companies would either not issue a policy to schools where every faculty member was armed, or that the premiums alone would bankrupt the school districts rather quickly.

I think Texas passed that "dumb Constitutional carry BS," so is now part of the 26 or 27 states with constitutional carry as law. I haven't heard it being repealed.

So some teachers don't mind the stress, even if the majority presumably don't for one reason or another.
