What is the Connection between the Player and the Waystone?

I've lurked here for a while but never posted, but I was in a guild group the other night doing 5-mans when this question was raised.
After thinking about it, my speculation was thus:

THE BASIC CONCEPT is that someone or something that has existed within Azeroth that WE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH left this "impression" upon our player-character, affecting us in some subtle, undetected way.

We were killed by Arthas - with a weapon of the Maw no less (Frostmourne).

Sadly I don't really have much to elaborate on that point at the moment, I just wanted to raise the idea here because I hadn't seen any threads about it yet.

Arthas killed Sylvanas and rezzed her with this power, and killed us later on at the climax of Icecrown Citadel. He attempted to do the same thing to us but was interrupted.

I know I'm crazy, but...could there be more to this?

Doesn't make sense as Worgens, Goblins, Pandaren, Kultirans, etc etc weren't present during the Lich Kings fall.

I always felt the Waystone was responding to the Heart of Azeroth, which any given PC should have on them at the time of the Shadowlands intro scenario.

erm why try to make it so complicated when the answer is aroudn your neck ... its obviously the heart of azeroth since its speculated that Azeroth herself is one of the first ones so it would be only natural that it reacts to literally the life essence of one of the first ones

Sorry, OP, but your theory falls apart.

It's because of Heart of Azeroth.

BfA is the only content required to do before Shadowlands so yeah, what the others said.

bfa isnt required though. demon hunter from 8-50 and never touched bfa content, didnt have a heart of azeroth either. just an heirloom neck.

I know everyone else is onboard with the Heart of Azeroth theory but it just doesn't add up for me, especially since the Heart is completely disconnected from its source when you're in the Shadowlands. Granted, it IS a(n alleged) piece of Azeroth itself, but isn't Azeroth just one of many worlds that feed into the Shadowlands?

I really feel like Arthas (and his role in history) is going to have a much larger role to play in all of this, despite Blizzard effectively trying to downplay that notion.

I appreciate all the feedback, though. I realize the Arthas/Frostmourne theory is inherently complicated, if not flawed, with the addition of Allied Races and such (a factor I had honestly overlooked).

I'm pretty sure that the Winter Queen was referring to Elune as her sister, not Azeroth, if that's what you're referencing here. Azeroth is a Titan, and an unhatched one at that.

some nice ideas but the Heart of Azeroth has the exact same problem as the death by Frostmourne, neither are required content to start Shadowlands so if you rule out one then you rule out both

we were, during our first trip in the Maw, carrying a shard of the Helm of Domination though...

Winter Queen's sister is likely to be titan related, Eonar or Freya.
As for what sets us apart, we were likely blessed by Elune at some point. It's mentioned that we have faced destruction many times but something keeps us anchored to Azeroth, we were facing old gods long before the heart of azeroth was given away as a present. We are the only being the spirit healers will ressurect and we have quests showing they are canon entities, one has/had a dragon stalker.

Wow, how did I even forget about the Helm? I immediately wrote it off when it was destroyed but you're absolutely right. A piece of the Maw right there, much like Frostmourne...or even a piece of Zovaal himself. Nice catch.

I'm not entirely convinced. We remain able to interact with it even after we leave the helm in Oribos. It would seem more likely to be some inherent quality of our character, since that's the only thing guaranteed to remain.

My theory is that the PC is some kind of reincarnation/remnant essence of the First Ones.

Well what about demon hunters? Arthas never killed them?

Funny, because according to Bastion my DH was present during MoP.

I dont believe it has anything to do with Arthas, more likely to do with constantly coming in contact with Titan stuff, which i believe has been said to evolve races, like the Taunka, or even the Heart of Azeroth.

And to those bringing up allied races or any race that couldn't have been there, lets be honest... there's only one Champion/Hero that could do this and it's most likely one that's been through a lot before.

Makes no sense for a Vulpera to have a Heart of Azeroth, let alone be blamed for the burning of Teldrassil and other things since they literally just joined the Horde. Tell me, does Ysera bond with a Lightforged Draenei, someone who's not from Azeroth(least not when she was alive) who she's never met before?

Kinda funny how the only times we die against a boss, lore-wise, is when they hold the powers of Death against us in a way. First Arthas, now Argus.

Also, the connection doesn't have anything to do with Arthas, and it's not a thing with the HoA either, I don't think. Probably has something to do with us being "special snowflakes", though.
