I'm pretty sure the gameplay is going to be on point but the major hurdle for me is that I don't really like their universe. I would've preferred them create a fresh universe from scratch for their MMO instead of trying to reverse engineer their lore-less MOBA and forcing it all into a consistent world that makes sense. I'll give them credit though they're certainly putting in the effort I'm just not confident it'll succeed.

Yeah, they've been working towards this for probably 5 years or more with rewriting lore and making it all fit together in a cohesive universe. I suspected they had something similar in mind for the League IP I just did not know if they would go full on with a MMO or just do a RPG from the perspective of different league champions. I guess we may get both ultimately.

They have what..3-5 years to build up the universe and improve the Lore. There's a lot of time for it to change

Seeing what Riot has done with Valorant and LoL - I can’t see a version of this MMO existing that doesn’t make current MMO cash shops look like socialism in comparison.

They put up an interactive map people assume is the world for the mmo.

Considering the literal peak of the sub count was in early Cata your statement of "WOTLK killing it before its end" is patently false?
The most difficult thing to do is accept that there is nothing wrong with things you don't like and accept that people can like things you don't.

This map has been up for some years now it’s unlikely to have any thing to do with the mmo.

Vanilla and TBC had growth, Wrath had stagnation, cata had decline.
You are welcome, Metzen. I hope you won't fuck up my underground expansion idea.

This graph has been posted and reposted so many hundreds of times if you haven't seen it before you've been living under a rock. The first point of Cata is the all time high spot.

yes the first month in cata was at all time high after Wotlk, and then cata ended with about mid TBC levels

So I take it you don't know how to read a graph, besides "this point is the highest"?

Whatever though, I hated a lot of the decisions in WoW under his leadership but it was pretty K overall, and he's got a lot more experience now. I'm fairly confident in him, and I super appreciated his tweet about wanting to respect players time and not try to make a game that's the "only game" people play. That was big for me, it's a great sentiment.
GC was a lead systems designer during his tenure at Blizzard, not the game director. That position doesn't have say in what gets implemented, only how. Sure, folks may have perfectly valid criticisms of Greg's philosophy and approach to design 6+ years ago, reading comments he's made in the recent months however I feel his involvement in the project is only reassuring. https://twitter.com/Ghostcrawler/status/1395453551694946304

You said Wrath was stagnation, which is flat out wrong.

Also because GC is now with a new company and they make new MMO, it will be awesome and have the most players. Not only the most, but also on forums every player will be happy?
Haides was bashing on Wrath calling it "stagnation".

Compared to the overall trend that tiny incline (which also depends on what dataset you use as a basis*) might as well be a flat line, in most graphs it is a flat with the expcetion of the prepatch bump for cata. I can hear you shout "but-but-but the point in cata!!1", again, which was at the very beginning followed by continous decline until there is the bump for the prepatch of MoP. If you actually read this graph proper and you don't attempt to hide behind irrelevant technicalities the reality is:
    vanilla/tbc - growth
    wrath - stagnation
    cata&beyond - shrinking
That are the overall trends in the dataset.

Now you can go and do whatever you want with that information, like conclude that the underlying functions of population increase and decrease reached equilibrium in wrath. The reason for that is that either the game got worse and everyone left or they ran out of potential customers and the growth coefficient collapsed, but the game stopped any meaningful growth during wrath. If that was because of Street or because Metzen was high on shrooms all the time dreaming up cata, I don't know, but it certainly was not one of the major growth periods of the game.

    But... it is?

For most of its time, the graph is a straight line at ~11 mil throughout the year 2009, with the numbers starting to grow just a bit to ~12 mil from around the time of the Cataclysm announcement until a bit after its release.
It rose from Classic through TBC, then stagnated in WotLK with only a bump after the cata announcement and then went on a downtrend after the initial release of Cataclysm.

But anyways, back to the actual topic. Anyone got any ideas what kind of system they might use in the game? The holy trinity or some experimental one like Guild Wars 2 tried (atleast in its initial release, no clue how it is today) or many of the 2D MMOs?

Y'all, this ain't the thread to discuss WoW's historical population. Keep things on the upcoming Riot MMO please.

No, it was pretty much confirmed (Ghostcrawler on Twitter) to be prepared for the MMO.
