I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences. They have broken their sacred Oath of Office.

I will be introducing a resolution calling for their expulsion.

If this only takes a simple majority, then democrats can make it happen. They have to at least try.

At this point there absolutely HAS to be consequences to these actions. It would be unwise for this to be just glossed over as something to be forgotten.

We cannot pretend that we can just return to normal. What's left of our democracy will slip away unless we actually undertake a significant constitutional reform.

Electoral, political, law enforcement, gun control etc related reforms.

The Democratic Party either begins this process now, or this country is gone.

And Republicans who actually even tangentially still believe in America and democracy need to abandon the party. Start a new one. The RNC as is, must go.

Yep, now is not the time to call for bipartisanship with the Republican Party. Either Democrats actually put up opposition to this fascist insurrection that the Republican Party enabled, or we have to do it ourselves. Now is not the time to shrivel up and tone ourselves down to prevent "fanning the flames", they're only going to get more aggressive regardless of what we do.

And I swear to god if Democrats use their new political capital to try to pass gun control as a means to prevent an armed fascist insurrection I'm gonna lose my god damned mind.

To play devil's advocate, the Capitol Police really don't have the manpower to respond to this. That's why they're putting out calls to external PDs and the National Guard. Trying to respond with escalations of force when you're vastly outnumbered and out-armed is just asking for a lot of people, including most/all of your officers, to get killed. It's reasonable to take a "minimize casualties, allow them access" kind of approach, in that case.

Doesn't justify taking goddamned selfies with the terrorists, though.

And this is all while you wait for backup to show up. Once they do, it's go-time.

They literally had desks and chairs barricading the doors to prevent people from entering and people were trying to break through the glass to force entry.

What exactly should they have done when violent insurrectionists try to take the Capitol building?

Isn't it always a tragedy when someone gets injured? Whether or not they did something to deserve it? It's a shame they were misinformed, that they brought the violence to the capitol building, and it's a tragedy that someone was shot. Whether or not it was justified. If they brandished a weapon, made threats, and as more details come out, that may indeed prove to be the case.
My initial standpoint stems from "I wish no one had to get shot. It's a shame it happened."

I understand that tensions are high, and people are quick to point fingers, be angry, and maybe I'm just not as familiar with the posters who tend to frequent this forum and if there's some kind of history that makes my particular style or word choice turn on alarms in people's heads, but whoosh, it's like some of you are leaping at things to attack.

This is actually untrue, there were around ~1000 people outside the police gates of the Capitol and not a single tear gas or rubber bullet was fired at them at any point. The police even opened up the gates and backed up into the Capitol building afterwards before even trying to fire off tear gas or rubber bullets. Like I said earlier, we literally saw these same police fire mass amounts of tear gas at protesters this summer when they cleared the way for Trump to walk to that church. They had the means to stop this and chose not to use it, even opening the gates to just... let people in.
