Also for all those dumdums that thought McConnell was acting in good faith.
The same dumdums that thought McConnell would even let you sniff $2000.

Like Covid relief. McConnell will refuse a floor vote in the Senate.

MCCONNELL says no impeachment trial until after inauguration: “I believe it will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power”

Stop letting your self get played by McConnell. Or the reporters that fawn over him. They're just praying for invites to his next cocktail party.

Yeah, but this time the leopard told me that if I put my face in its mouth it wouldn't eat me. I dunno, after it ate my face the past 500 times it told me this I think it's finally being honest with me. My stiches from the last time are still fresh, so at least it'll be easy to put that part of my face back together.

Everyone operating under the assumption that Democrats were expecting this to be expedited to take place in the next week are well...wrong. Whether Mitch is a shithead or not, he would’ve informed Schumer and Pelosi of this before they even started the process. It’s not news to them.

wait congress should spend the next 7 days focused on transition? uh, senate is out of session for the next 6 days. basically "we need the next 6 days to get in our final bit of sitting on our asses after not doing our jobs for years because in 7 days, which is when I lose my ability to completely obstruct, and we'll have to actually, do some work."

When Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president ever impeached twice in a bipartisan rebuke, he did so as a leader increasingly isolated, sullen and vengeful.

With less than seven days remaining in his presidency, Trump’s inner circle is shrinking, offices in his White House are emptying, and the president is lashing out at some of those who remain. He is angry that his allies have not mounted a more forceful defense of his incitement of the mob that stormed the Capitol last week, advisers and associates said.

Though Trump has been exceptionally furious with Vice President Pence, his relationship with lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of his most steadfast defenders, is also fracturing, according to people with knowledge of the dynamics between the men.

Trump has instructed aides not to pay Giuliani’s legal fees, two officials said, and has demanded that he personally approve any reimbursements for the expenses Giuliani incurred while traveling on the president’s behalf to challenge election results in key states. They said Trump has privately expressed concern with some of Giuliani’s moves and did not appreciate a demand from Giuliani for $20,000 a day in fees for his work attempting to overturn the election.

As he watched impeachment quickly gain steam, Trump was upset generally that virtually nobody is defending him — including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, economic adviser Larry Kudlow, national security adviser Robert C. O’Brien and Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, according to a senior administration official.

“The president is pretty wound up,” said the senior administration official, who, like some others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid. “No one is out there.”
More in the link but damn, is the Rudy/Trump bromance finally gonna come to an end?

Without Trump goading them on (and ESPECIALLY if he's disqualified from running for office,) I think the majority of Trump's cult will just file back into the ranks of the GOP. They don't have the attention span to remember what the GOP did or did not do two years prior to 2022, especially if the GOP is back on their normal bullshit of blaming the democrats for everything and telling them socialist immigrant boogeymen are coming to rape their jobs. They'll be far more afraid of that than they will care about what some members of the GOP did or said two years prior.

It's not news to us, either; he was clear that the Senate is out of session until the 19th as early as last week.

It likely will when Rudy stops getting his 20,000 a day.

Don't think anyone here was expecting the turtle to expedite the trial and get it done before inauguration. I do think he'd support or not stand in the way of conviction if he thought it'd be politically advantageous, though, which really depends on what happens between now and then.

If Trump had kept shitting the bed it would be more likely. Losing his Twitter probably saved his ass, ironically. Now the Republicans are moving on to the standard "let's unify and heal" phase of the abusive relationship though, and the press is going to indulge them like usual. So it's looking more likely now that they'll let him slide again.

I also don't think a Trump 2024 bid is feasible anyway. He's looking at major financial trouble and has lost support from major donors. His social media presence is null. Facing legal challenges that could bury him.

    But we'll see.

Perhaps McConnell in his usual scheming intends to kick the can down the curb until the 20th so that the democrats will officially be "in control" of the senate so as to direct any Trumpkin ire towards the democrats should they elect to remove Trump after the fact, which will then conveniently benefit the Republicans in ensuring that Trump doesn't run again or serve as a spoiler candidate.

Or perhaps, like I've said before, they're simply trying to plead the fifth on all things Trump, essentially trying to distance themselves from any and all Trump news so that people forget they had any involvement one way or the other in it in a hopes to both appeal to moderate voters who wanted Trump gone (the GOP would claim they were out of session so couldn't vote on it) and appeal to the Trump cultists because the GOP didn't technically ever vote to remove the cultist's god-king from power.

But he served for the same length of time that the Confederacy existed, surely he'll be happy with that.

They don't have to remember, the right wing propaganda machine that created Trump remains in place, more determined than ever. Trump is merely a symptom, there will be more.

The point is is that they wont remain loyal to Trump. Most of them will slog back to being in the GOP, especially now with Trump silenced.

But Trump is not going to go away no matter how hard the GOP tries, his entire way of making money now is milking the base. He is vindictive so he will turn them against the GOP especially if they vote to ban him from office.

I know a lot of these Republican senators are going to claim they fear for their lives so they voted no, but every Dem and 10 repubs are also in just as much danger. So since this happened virtually straight down party lines, either the fear is bullshit, or now provably, the Republicans are the literal party of cowards.
