Well, doesn't have to be successful to cause more damage later on. Thing is, the people who would actually do real damage were shown on national TV for everyone to see that the defenses for the seat of the government were nearly non existent. You know, the same types that took over the wildlife refuge or were part of the Bundy standoff(and the various lone wolf actions coming from that). Now, don't get me wrong, I know they are beefing up our defenses quite a bit with the National Guard and the like but those people are really big on martyrdom. Remember, they have the exact same mentality as the hijackers from 9/11 and want to die for a cause.

US code doesn't give a clear definition to what counts as rebellion or insurrection, essentially giving room for judges to distinguish between what is protected under the first amendment and what is insurrection, but as a rule of thumb, once you move from speech to violence...like storming the Capitol, plan to kidnap government officials and use violence to overthrow the government (like replace an elected president with an unelected one) pretty much qualifies.

It probably will fade into relative obscurity except as "That time some Fentonyl Americans vandalized the capitol building", or, it won't really be labeled all that significant in the long run compared to every other thing that happened since January 6th 2020. In the end it was about three hours, they dispersed quickly, a cop died and four of them died. It isn't exactly a 9/11 event or something, all though it is the closest most are going to get to the "Fascist Coup!" that has occupied many a flight of fancy for the last four years. For a putsch it was kinda a lazy affair, these dudes didn't even seize power, vandalized the capitol building, allegedly took a shit in a hallway, posed for some pics and stole some stuff and then were cleared out. The massive large scale Economic Depression that will likely consume the next ten years of our lives will be a bigger deal in the long run. It wasn't big enough as say 9/11, as a coup, its erstwhile leader didn't even show up. And it was over in less than a day and mostly existed to create some selfies and tiktok vids. People will be dealing with the aftermath of 2020 basically for over a decade. Every teacher will be playing catch up with kids who've basically lost a year of school or more, and are now maybe four years behind. Millions are starving and tens of millions are destitute and nearly homeless. I am sure some will remember this, kinda like Charlotsville or GamerGate; something that gets invoked, that only bluechecks utter as some kinda of talismanic charm or incantation. It'll probably go down as a "Riot" by most historians in a century.

To the extent it can be a "Big Deal" is only if we let it be a big deal. The country withers and dies because this becomes the only thing the MSM talks about; and responding to it becomes "The only thing that matters" as the United States croaks and dies during the Economic Depression that is still ongoing. Largely because the Elite among themselves become too busy asserting their authority and prestige and such trivial things and forget that the country they are in charge of is quit literally dying.

I'm going to have to disagree. While the "What happened" of this event isn't very significant, the "Why it happened" is extremely significant. It was Trump's failed coup, and among many of his other failings, it will also be one of the things he is remembered for.

I'd disagree that it's necessarily dehumanizing. Goebells was a human as well, and I really don't see any human being as a true monster - we're all capable, and even the best intentions can cause someone to do unspeakable evil.

Given that so many republicans were willing to embrace fascism or just let it happen, I can't see myself ever voting for one. Despite me having voting for republicans in the past, they've essentially forced me to always vote democrat given their apparent hatred for democracy.

Since they didn't succeed, history will remember them for exactly what they are. They betrayed their country and its people. They made the world a worse place.

On top of that, I don't see myself ever trusting a Trump supporter. Certainly not with the safety of my friends and family. I wouldn't trust them with my pets or even smallest bit of my property. I'm not going to be hostile towards them, but I'll always have to keep in mind that their judgment is extremely poor.

I think "Why it Happened" is fairly significant so you are right and I agree on that, but I think a lot of why it happened is way more complicated than what will be sold here on MMO-C.

Nor will the "Why it Happened" be deeply analyzed beyond what is necessary to justify that new Patriot Act that is brewing. The "Why" will begin and end with what can justify domestic spying and censorship and a War on Terror here at home. But I have a gut feeling that the "Why" will end up not mattering in the end, as the reaction to it will vastly eclipse whatever the "Why" was. Much as the reaction to 9/11 basically replaced 9/11 in scope, scale and endurance.
