That helicopter drone is brilliant. Can't wait to see footage from it.

That's good to hear. I was so worried something would go wrong with the landing, and I can only imagine how worried the people working on this must have been.

Watching these things never get easier. And this mission especially has so much riding on it, with it being the prerequisite of both the Sample Return mission and testing MOXIE to convert CO2 to O2.

If anyone is interested you can rerun a simulation of the landing here: https://eyes.nasa.gov/apps/mars2020/...1:25.492+01:00

Gotta scrub those secret US bases on Mars from the footage before they can release it : |

But real, I'm looking forward to the actual video.

Isn't there a Chinese probe landing sometime soon too? These are exciting times.

Those are from the engineering cameras. There's another 19 cameras on the rover, and 2 on the helicopter. You'll get full color pictures soon enough!

It's in orbit right now. Lander is scheduled to descend in May or June.

Any explanation for the ignorant on why does it hang in orbit for months?

For the exact reasion, who knows? It's China after all, there's only so much they share. But it is just a part of the overall mission. It's currently attached to the scientific orbiter probe. I would assume it's hanging on there until they move that into a favorable orbit that allows for landing under their parameters. Getting into an actual orbit first before landing does provide the benefit of not coming screaming into the atmosphere at almost 20000 km/h, so the heat shield won't be facing as much of a task as Perseverance's did.

I think they're getting detailed images of the landing area and trying to determine the safest spot to aim for.

    There's 4k footage of the video above ^^^ on NASA's Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4czj...ature=emb_logo

It is seriously impressive stuff! Although it was a little disappointing that there is no sound from the descent.

I just watched the video feed and frankly, it's amazing. Getting "live" video from the descending craft, and then the dual video of the sky crane - amazing.

That is just so great to see that and to hear the relief and joy in the voice once it's successful. Beautiful.
