The 49ers did it in their game today.
But it depends on how much you trust your defense and your offense. Because a single first down will ice it, so your defense has to be strong. And then, even if you get it back, you're going to have to go 75ish yards in just over a minute with no timeouts.
If your defense and/or offense is struggling a bit, then it's better to risk an all or nothing on 4th and then have all 3 timeouts to move downfield than trust that you can hold on defense and then drive on offense with no timeouts.

I kind of hope they tie at this point.
I'm sat here phone in hand with the emergency services number on dial.
I can't take much more of this.
Ex-Mod. Technically retired, they just won't let me quit.
Hell yeah.
If you're the raiders and the Chargers are held to 3 with a lot of clock and timeouts consumed, just take the knee.
How close was that?
Forget two inches, that was a centimeter at most.

Have the Chargers ran the football since the 7 minute mark in the 4th quarter? Good lord. It's like they forgot about balance in the offense.
The Chargers seem to only catch passes on 4th down. This drive might take a lot of time off the clock.
Jesus H Christ. Herbert does it AGAIN on 4th
Cause that isn't how it works, if a person played 15 games last year it was a 16 game season, if a person played 16 games this year in a 17 game season it still happened in a SEVENTEEN game season. Period. That's how it works.
If you miss a game in said season that is too fucking bad. It won't matter in a few years when people just accept 17 game season records as the standard for all the records.
