Lock is so bad he lost his starting job to a QB the Panthers paid to leave after they replaced him with Darnold that checks down all the time and still turns it over a lot.

I wonder what garbage they are going to sign this off-season instead of getting a top 30 QB.

Packers put Funchess on IR, he's out for the season.

    Again.
Ex-Mod. Technically retired, they just won't let me quit.

In other news, the Giants starting defense is not very good, and it;s only practice, but Mac Jones absolutely shredded them for 2+ hours today.

Looking more and more likely that Cam just accidentally lost his job.

Brady took Drew Bledsoe's job and the Patriots stuck with him over their 100M dollar investment so not keeping Cam around as the starter when they only owe him about 4M seems unlikely.

First sign of what may happen in this situation is tomorrow when Cam is back.

Does he go back to dominating the starter reps with the 1st team, against the 1st team? Does he get the second string snaps now?

    We shall see.

Getting to this real late, but the sportsbooks all took down their bets for who will be the Week 1 starter for the Pats. Cam was at -320 odds to be the week 1 starter and then...pooof....you can't bet that any more. Those Vegas books tend to know what they're doing, too.

    Ah, well:

"Ryan was ruled out with an ankle injury in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks, ending Ryan's streak of 154 consecutive regular season games started." from the 2019 season.

So he's missed 1 game since 2009. lol
A mircle since the Falcons O-Line hasn't not been the best in all those years either.

Patriots traded for the Ravens 5th round CB from this year's draft. Shaun Wade. Had good numbers in pre-season, but potentially more a slot corner than a boundary corner.

This does open up a topic that is interesting: Patriots situation with Stephon Gilmore.

Now, we didnt trade for this guy to replace Gilmore, it's more likely that this move was inspired by our starting slot corner leaving practice today with a leg injury, but it is trading resources for a player at a position that has tradionally been a strength for the Patriots the past 10 years.

I mean, Patriots no. 1 corner since 2012:

    2012: Aqib Talib
    2013: Aqib Talib
    2014: Darelle Revis
    2015: Malcolm Butler
    2016: Malcolm Butler
    2017: Stephon Gilmore
    to
    2020: Stephon Gilmore

    2021: ???

A murderer's row of corners, but that 2021 is the question. Do the Patriots get Gilmore back? Do they trade him?

He's currently still recovering from quad tear late last year, but if he gets healthy, he also wants to have a new contract.

And it;s been mousy quiet around Gilmore and his contract wishes all through training camp (mostly cuase of the QB competition).

But, with Patriots history of trading players and now bulking up their depth at the position, maybe the 2 are related? Maybe BB thinks that JC Jackson can be the no. 1 corner this year and grow, while being supported by a more ferocious than usual (for the Patriots) pass rush?

JC didn't perform too great when he had the no. 1 role at the end of last season, but he wasn't a total disaster either. The problem I feel is more on who is beside him on the field. At that point you get:

Jon Jones: starting slot corner, got injured today, no indication yet how bad it is or if it's even anything at all.
Jalen Mills: came over from Eagles where he was good at safety and slot, but a liability on the outside
Joejuwan Williams: Tall corner we took in the 2nd some years back. ALways just kinda been there without much impact.
Michael Jackson: kinda short corner. Mixed results this pre-season. Flashes, but also the most picked on corner on the roster I think. No sure thing to make the roster, tbh.

The rest are practice squaders and hopefuls, most likely.

With the new guy added that means we are 6 deep at corner or 7 deep if you count Gilmore. That's a lot. And it probably means players elsewhere need to be cut.

    Tough situation to navigate.

It's probably going to come down to how quickly Gilmore gets on the field and how much teams are willing to cough up to get him.

If Gilmore is really on the table then John Schneider and all his 10 burner phones better be calling up the Patriots.

As always in the NFL, almost everyone is available...for the right price.

    And there's the rub probably.

Schneider would love to add him as would any other team, at their price. No telling what the Patriots demands are though. Rumour has it that the price was a 1st rounder in the early offseason and at the trade deadline last year. No one came calling.

No matter how badly I might feel about the Viking's OL during a season, I can take solace that at least things aren't as bad as they were for the Falcons that one season when they had to have two TEs play OL (I can't remember if they went in at tackle or guard) because they'd lost so many people to injuries that that is literally all they had available who knew the blocking scheme.

I misremembered. They lost three OL players to injuries and put a TE in at RT in the 4th quarter since that's all they had left.

Not quite as hilarious as punters or kickers or long snappers getting injured and having to be replaced by people who never play the position, but still quite good.

At least with Oline you can shift help his way, by the RB chipping etc. Good luck helping a non-kicker kick or punt. xD

Jameis Winston named week 1 starter for the Saints, not a shocker here. They NEED to let Taysom Hill go back to his role from last season and NOT sit around on the bench as a QB2. I think the Saints will do the smart thing there and put him back in the game in other spots.

Since he lost some weight to get in QB shape maybe less blocking and such, which should be fine, did he ever run a fake on a punt? Maybe once? Just use him for running and receiving like he did under Brees.

I don't really care for the notion of carrying four QBs. Maybe Book will show enough in the third preseason game to be trusted as the #3.

I mean likely they can stash one of the QBs on the practice squad, which would likely be Siemian if anyone.

And from what I understand Hill didn't lose that much weight, so shouldn't be that hard to put it back on, but yeah focus on him being a running/catching threat that also can throw the ball whenever the play calls for it. He doesn't need to play special teams anymore I'd say.

Tom Tupa's final pass is my favorite

No 3rd preseason game for Saints/Cardinals, they tried to hurry it up and do it before the hurricane, but cancelling always was the more sensible option.

Minshew to the Eagles for only a conditional 6th.

Too bad Denver didn't trade for him instead of Bridgewater, but they did say they wanted to be fair to Lock and that battle wouldn't have even been close.

I haven't been too impressed with Minshew, granted I've only really seen his games against the Saints and Chargers. I think he's a really good backup, but the upside is pretty limited. A good idea to trade him away so the fanbase doesn't clamor for him as soon as Lawrence has a typical rookie game.

Bridgewater is still a guy I see as a better fit for Denver. Carolina had no defense or running game and so it fell to Teddy to carry the offense, which he can't do. Denver has more talent in those departments and Teddy should be the right guy to not screw up his part in it.

Obviously I've got a pro-Bridgewater bias and I'm seeing things more how they benefit him more than how they benefit Denver, that aside I still think they're better off with him than with Minshew based on what I've seen on the field from both.

Minshew kinda reminds me of early dalton. People were amazed by how consistent and stable he was for a young guy, then they realized that was as good as he was going to get.
