    WoW Arena MMR Clarification

Please implement weekly / biweekly CR / MMR decay for inactive players to encourage more ladder play.

Shadowlands has seen tremendous participation in Arena with the number of unique players and total matches exceeding those seen in recent seasons. As some have noted, this level of participation has had some unintended effects at the very top of the ladder. The nature of our rating system means that the more people that participate, the more likely it is that the very best players in the world will reach extremely high matchmaking ratings. In this case, a number of players have reached the upper boundary of our rating system and as a result, they may achieve victories that don’t result in rating increases. Since the number of players capable of playing at this level is limited, if they choose not to participate, it becomes difficult for those players immediately below them to also gain rating.

We have two solutions to this problem, one of which is already in place and the other will take effect with weekly restarts on Tuesday.

First, over the past 7 years World of Warcraft has had a rating inflation system in place that increases the mean rating of competitors at a rate of 10 points per week (note: This is the rate of increase for clarity but the number is actually increasing with each second). This means that the number that all ratings – including the highest rating possible – are calibrated at increases by 10 points each week, so players that continue playing throughout the season have an advantage compared to those who stop when it comes to end of season rewards. Ultimately, if high end players choose not to play, their rating will be overcome by those who do.

Second, we are going to increase the upper bound of our matchmaking rating system with weekly restarts this week. This should mean that players at the top of the ladder should have less matches that reward no rating change.

We appreciate everyone letting us know about this issue and hope that the upcoming increase the matchmaking cap will improve the situation for the few players affected.

All of this could be solved by unnerfing mythic plus loot.

Pugging is just solo queue with extra (annoying and timeconsuming) steps.

    Yet...you give no reason why.

Look...arenas were born out of all the "duel" ists that stood outside org and IF all day testing their ONE VS ONE skills.

Blizzard just needs to take their Ranking System from Hearthstone and apply it to all their other games. The current system is more about penalizing players for losing rather then rewarding players for winning, and there's issues with it at ALL levels of play, from being unable to simply play with lesser skilled friends lest you have to put in an extra 200 games to get to a higher ranking, to the whole boosting issues plaguing all levels of ranked play, and even the higher ranked players being outright discouraged from playing, since even if you win you still lose.

Instead, just encourage players winning. Hearthstone does this perfectly - Even with the best decks available, you'll eventually reach a point to where your skill and knowledge makes a huge difference. And you still have to dedicate a large amount of time to getting to high ranks - None of this "Win 20 games straight getting carried by a 2.7k rating guy gives you Gladiator for the season"

Yet, Blizzard doesn't stop and think "Why is arena participation queue a lot higher this season?". I mean they should realize by now that PvP is one of the better ways of gearing up / getting gear reliably thus the participation is going to be higher. Though why fix loot in other aspects of the game to be somewhat more comparable (even adding +1 loot to all M+ runs) when you can just say "Oh this MMR change will fix everything!"

They know. You think they use their lawyer speak accidentality? recent seasons for example doesnt mean peak of last expac at start. last seasons of last expac fits and of course its more dead at end. They never talk straight.

SoloQ!!! Now, not in the next expansion. Just replace skirmish with SoloQ!

They know, and I'm pretty sure their sentiment is "mission accomplished".

Blizzard trys from time to time to get pve players into pvp and vice versa. Sometimes it gets abysmal feedback like requiring BGs for cloak in MoP, this time it seems to have worked better.

This is the third time in a short period that Blizzard is taking the wrong measures and slapping a bandaid on a problem and letting it endure rather than fixing it.

First it was Drums in Classic TBC, where instead of putting a cooldown on them and reducing the mandatory amount of LW's to 5, they thought up some convoluted solution which effectively changes nothing except making minmaxing more annoying than it already was.

Second it was the Chronoboon in classic. Rather than just removing Worldbuffs from raids and addressing the toxic meta when it was relevant we now finally have some silly device added that will take away any excuse people previously might have had for not having worldbuffs in raid.

And finally, instead of fixing MMR inflation and teams camping ratings by adding a weekly decay above say 3k rating for players that don't queue sufficient matches, they allow teams to reach even higher peaks during the early season when people are active and make them even more untouchable afterwards when 80% of the ladder has quit. They also leave in place a system where once you've reached your desired rating you are incentivized to never queue again, because falling below that rating blocks you from upgrading gear to the maximum.

Poor choices from the team, really feel like there's been a brain drain at Blizzard as of late.

Blizzards slogan needs to be “One step forward, two steps back”

why is it so hard to add SOLO QUEUE? That is no excuse coming from blizzard/activision to think of that.

In blizz eyes, forcing PvE casuals to play PvP due to better rewrads is an enormous success. Thay do not understand this peak in participation will be followed by a peak of PvE casuals leaving the game because of this (yet another) not very enjoyable grind.

More like "every backwards long journey starts with a small step forward".

give us #soloQ already ! who gives a flying fuck about a select few high end arena players apart from watching them ? we are the majority, not them !
war does not determine who is right, only who is left.

    Literally every game has it.

Real question: Why isn't there rating decay? If you stop playing, if you stop competing your rating should decay.

Because removing rewards after you've earned them is dumb and your ranking relative to others decays over time if you don't play.

We don’t need solo queue. Solo queue is already in the game in the form of arena skirmishes. Plus you’re not going to get any significant rating with no comms solo queue. Terrible idea and I hope Blizzard squashes the idea.
