Arkansas Legislature punches down as they target trans gender children's names.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/state-w...students-names

The Arkansas state House has passed a measure that would allow teachers to ignore a transgender student’s preferred name or gender pronouns, the latest in a series of bills targeting the rights of trans children.

The measure, House Bill 1749, would bar public schools from requiring teachers or staff to address a student by their preferred pronouns or even a preferred name that does not conform to the student’s biological gender.

School employees who are required to use a pronoun, title or word to address a student would be protected under the state’s Civil Rights Act under the bill.

State Rep. Mary Bentley (R), the legislation’s chief sponsor, said she had heard from teachers about students who frequently changed their names or pronouns. Those teachers said they feared being sued if they used the wrong title, Bentley said, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

“This bill is just a first step to help protect our teachers, but when we have students in school now that don’t identify as a boy or a girl but as a cat, as a furry, we have issues,” Bentley said, using an incorrect pronoun to describe students.

State Rep. Fred Love (D) said the use of a student’s preferred pronoun or name was nothing more than common courtesy.

“That’s one of the simplest decencies that we can give someone,” Love said. “That’s not hard. That’s not difficult. That’s just a bit of decency and a bit of respect and I think that’s what we need to do.”

The measure passed largely along party lines, though two Republicans voted against it.

The bill is the latest attack on transgender rights, a new focus of Republican-led legislatures that have passed bills in several states to bar transgender children from girls’ sports.

Arkansas this week became the first state to bar gender-affirming medical procedures — usually hormone therapy — from transgender minors. The legislature overrode Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s (R) veto to pass that measure.

In a statement, Hutchinson said the new measure did not pass muster. He said he would ask the state Department of Education to look into the matter, though he hinted he would issue another veto.

“This bill is unnecessary,” Hutchinson wrote.

Legislators in dozens of states have considered bills that target the transgender community, especially over participation in girls’ sports. Transgender youth are already among the groups most susceptible to suicidal ideation.

“They’re trying to find something where people’s fear will still overwhelm their wish to be inclusive, and they work very hard to spread fear and misinformation to try to keep equality from spreading too far,” Kate Oakley, the state legislative director and senior counsel at the Human Rights Campaign, told The Hill last month. “It’s complete fear mongering."
Refusing to show a modicum of respect or dignity for a group that is already greatly discriminated against in this country. Arkansas Republican controlled Legislature passed a law that teachers do not have to call students by their preferred name or pronoun. Republicans continue to show they have no empathy for anyone that isn't white, straight, christian or male and it is sickening. It really doesn't matter if you don't agree with trans gender people but to go out of your way to insult them by refusing to call them by the name they prefer. Why can't you just refer to her as Tammy or him as Billy even tough they were born Tommy and Brittany. Is calling somebody by their preferred name going to make you trans magically? It is why I scoff at any Republican who whines about freedoms when they do everything in their power to use the government to control the lives of anyone in this country who isn't a white, male, straight Christian.

Imaging paying these people's salaries via taxes so they can pass pointlessly cruel laws like this instead of improving the states infrastructure, expanding Medicaid, or anything that you'd expect your state government to do.

Anything to it other than that? Seems like so far this is just avoiding obligations to take a side on trans identity. Most of this story is everything outside of the story itself (the larger culture war, the other laws that have been passed, discrimination faced on the street-level) rather than anything the law itself really does.

Republicans continue to show they have no empathy for anyone that isn't white, straight, christian or male and it is sickening.
The "or" should be an "and" here, right? (trans people are white...)

    That really escalated...

The fact that this is where you go with this is profoundly fucked up.

I mean... No there isn't more to it than that. It is exactly what it says on the tin, it is conveying the news of a piece of legislation; and then the rest of the article is there to expand on why such a piece of legislation is a broader push on an issue. That's usually what news does, not just snippets of facts thrown out in the void, with zero context.

Like, I think you are somehow trying to be obtuse and pretending as if this law is somehow some super neutral and completely objectively devoid of any criticism, and that any feelings towards it would be illogical. Which, no. Far from it.

Can't discuss transgender issues on this forum. This message board has so much hatred that it could not handle being talked about. Look at all the secret hatred that came out when they thought a shooter was white and it turned out he was not. The people here can't keep their hatred under control , so they don't get to talk about it

Do you like taking one step forward and 4,000 steps back? Do you like regressing in thought, hate science, and like cruelty? The Republican party might just be the one for you!

Clearly Arkansas has everything figured out that they just felt like doing something rather than going out into a field and sitting on it.

I like your bias showing clearly how triggered you are by this straight white male persona you have of every Republican. Generalizations seem to be your only retort. Nothing in your opinion is a fact used to dispute anything in the article, just your feelings and your hatred for straight white Christian males. I am sure you care nothing for the institutions being sued over the pronouns, or the teachers who are suing because they got fired. Or the schools being sued for allowing the pronouns. Just feelings, your good intention feelings....

Man, the obtuseness is getting real high today. Must be something in the air, like, suppressed bigotry that can't be expressed, so gotta find another avenue to try and distort or derail topics where one can't straight up say that they are glad that someone is working against the evil liberal agenda. Or something along those lines.

This is the second thread about children where you felt the need to assert your belief that it is unfair that people are angry that adults who have authority over them aren’t being respectful of them.

You come across as immensely self centered.

    - - - Updated - - -

I thought about this, and I want to expand on my last post.

Imagine being the sort of loser who is so fucking self-righteous and self-absorbed that you feel the need to assert yourself and your personal belief structure by being mean to children and insisting that your emotionally stunted outbursts leveled against them should be respected speech. Then you think this is a thing worth defending to the point where you come in to a thread and assert that everyone else can't handle the conversation because they don't want to deal with your tantrum aimed at fucking children.

    Grow the fuck up.

The lack of self awareness never ceases to amuse.

I guess when the right wing lost the ability to be openly hateful to gays without consequence they had to pick the next letter that still allows them to punch down to feel good about themselves.

What shallow hollow people these folks much be to get off on being cruel to children. They probably support the separation policy at the border too -- after all if you can't make the people you don't like suffer, what's the point of holding office, eh?

This is basically what happens when you surrender your empathy in favor of self-absorbed ideology built entirely on being outraged about people getting annoyed because you lack the social wherewithal to simply shut the fuck up. Parts of the right have completely surrendered to the notion that freedom of speech is entirely about ignoring basic social competency and egging on the notion that their only way to defend their beliefs is to destroy other people in such a way that it ranges into obvious cruelty to anyone not drinking in the same outrage.

What if the name is gender neutral, I could think of Sam and Pam from SNL?
But there's also Charlie, Finley, Skyler, Justice, Royal, Lennon, Oakley, Armani, Azariah, Landry, Frankie, Sidney, Denver, Robin, Campbell, Dominique, etc (list from https://www.mother.ly/child/top-50-g...urize-gift-set ).

And then there's a boy named Sue

I think it's more people realize children as a whole are little shits. There isn't a way I wouldn't use this as a kid to be a little ass hole and stir shit.

If you think they wouldnt I don't think you have ever been around kids.
