Swords of Legends Online- NEW B2P MMORPG

Hello all, I didn't see an existing thread for this one yet so thought I would go for it, we have ourselves a new MMORPG coming out this Summer, yes this Summer 2021. It enters closed beta Friday May 21st.

Swords of Legends Online [SOLO] is a Chinese Guijan mmorpg featuring hybrid based action combat (think Guild Wars 2) dungeons, raids, pvp, and very in depth housing system, and a lot of things you expect in a themepark mmorpg.

Now to ease some fears, this game has ZERO pay to win. It has been out in China for two years and is very successful there with a cosmetic only shop and sub fee, here in the west the store was accessible in alpha and once again, only had cosmetics.

Besides the Wildstar esque housing, the game doesn't do much new, but the general reception to the alpha and those who have played the oversees version is that it does what it does really well. It is a game that doesn't try to innovate but instead tries to perfect what is known as tradtional.

Very detailed beta notes from the devs, gives a ton of info about the game: http://gf2.geo.gfsrv.net/cdna1/b8419...005cc3b480.pdf

Honestly, I am excited, I watched a FF14 streamer play it for hours and he had reached max in the alpha and gave the game tons of praise. Many of those in Alpha gave it great ratings as well, this seems like what a lot of people want. Not every game needs to redo the genre, sometimes I want a new mmo to just do what has been done, but do it really well.

PSA: IF YOU PRE ORDER THE GAME, you can play the beta test and refund it on STEAM if you dont like it regarldess of hours played in beta.

Looks pretty bland and actually quite shit imo.
    1) Load the amount of weight I would deadlift onto the bench
    2) Unrack
    3) Crank out 15 reps
    4) Be ashamed of constantly skipping leg day

Looks like your generic Asian MMO. visually OK but nothing out of this world and from the few videos that i watched gameplay isn't something to write home about, again just like any generic Asian MMO.

Looks like doesnt mean much here, it is nothing like BDO, it is much more like WoW or XIV than it is BDO or Archeage or whatever from Korea.

And yes, it isn't something new, it is something that tries to do what has been done but do it really well.

I doubt it, Gameforge can't really alter the game in anyway without developer approval, the devs have proven to be very anti-p2w.

visuals remind me of Mu a bit, though I guess those are standard visuals for chinese mmos.
    ...that's just my opinion, anyway.

All of this cosmological stuff is too boring for me. I'd like to get Warcraft back, please. my thing is killing defias and orcs.

Eh, doesn't look captivating enough to me. Feels a little the same as other MMORPGs I've experienced.

But they are new, as I believe, so - good luck on their adventure.

The devs are moving the game to UE4, which should be coming to NA sometime after launch. That said I think it looks fine as is.

wuxia/murim mmo.. that is a hard sell unless you are really into old chinese stuff. The best part is usually the movement, which tends to lead to prancing through the air .
You are welcome, Metzen. I hope you won't fuck up my underground expansion idea.

Man, I played Ikariam over a decade ago and you could just pour money into that game and take on a dozen players at a time.

The theme is my biggest issue with the game, I don't care for this exclusively Chinese aesthetic, however I just want a good new mmo.

To really make an awesome and unique MMORPG they should use their own engine. UE4 is awesome, no doubt but while it certainly can be used to make an MMORPG it is FPS engine by core.

Not really, UE has been extensively used for non-shooters since UE3, and UE4/5 continue to expand its capabilities. You have everything from open world action games to fighting games to racing games build on that engine.

While internal engines are more common now, licensed engines are still damn good for teams that may not have the resources or expertise needed to build one in-house, or simply may not want to.

Yes as I said it can be used to make MMORPG's but it is never as good as a custom engine tailored for the specific needs of an MMORPG.

Kinda sorta maybe? Most of the MMO's are build on UE3, which has its own problems and hasn't been supported for ages. UE4 appears to be much improved and better suited for MMO's, and I imagine UE5 will have even more tools. It's mostly a factor of the UE MMO's out on the market/coming out being built on the older UE3 tech.

But my point was more that UE isn't "an FPS engine" and hasn't been for a while.

Doesn't look super appetizing to be fair - but hey, never judge a book by it's cover and all that.

This looks like a game that should've launched in 2010. You can't come in 2021 with an MMO that looks worse than ESO did when it launched.
