It'd be nice to live in fantasy sports land, where all the worries of the world disappear because two teams are having a game of football, but that isn't reality.

Even two teams coming together to have a game when their nations are at odds is political, it is in itself an anti-war statement.
Well that's a bit of an extreme is it. I mean it's not that often that two nations are at war or close to. We're talking about colouring the stadium rainbow to counter whatever they're doing in Hungary. How is that different from a player coming out with a controversial political statement?

That was referring to the Mkhitaryan situation. Where the host nation of the Europa League final, Azerbaijan, had a border dispute with Armenia, where Mkhitaryan is from. He and Arsenal agreed that he would not travel to the final because of genuine concerns for his safety, and possibly his life.

Which yeah it's a bit of an extreme is what I'm saying. Anyway fuck it who cares, they're not playing tonight right?

I thought that would be obvious.

But when you guys are calling me a Marxist when I'm a pretty straightforward social democrat, it gets pretty absurd.

    - Capitalism abhors a free market, which is why we have regulations against making dangerous things, monopolies, cartels and so on.
    - A free market cannot exist for essential services, as essential services are by definition a captive market.

That's essentially my anti-capitalist rant right there. Free markets for anything beyond the basics, for anything I can say "no, I don't want or need that", go for it. Otherwise, healthcare, transport infrastructure, utilities, communications, they should come out of taxes.

    - On policing, well, I don't think we should send police to beat up and shoot mentally ill people, I think they should be afforded the correct specialist help.
    - A police response should be proportionate to the crime being committed - I'm not sure a broken tail light or even DUI mandates a death sentence anywhere in the west at least.

On LGBT+ rights, I think we should have the same rights, and necessary protections of those rights, as anyone else. Fundamentally, your freedom ends where mine begins, which means simply you don't get to call for a reduction in that freedom, under any circumstance. Nor do you get to single out any such group in a similar manner.

This isn't everyone should get paid the same and work toward the greater good kind of stuff.

But I don't see how that makes any difference to what I said.

So this thread is starting to stray into nation bashing and other forbidden topics.

Also there was a conspiracy theory a page or so back.

Consider this a warning to keep the discussion within the parameters of the forum's rules, and keeping it relative to the thread (and subforum) at hand.

Again common human decency not politics!

So things like this stops happening: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50050410

Edit: Sorry didn't see the mod post before posting, I wont comment on this subject again.

    Duly noted.

I’m not seeing either England or Scotland scoring tonight. England probably 0-0, Scotland probably losing.

I'm hoping to see England win or lose. Don't fancy a draw and going in the other side of the bracket. That should give us the freedom to go all out and play attacking football. Which of course means we will play for 0-0.

  11. #411
Who's risking it in this group? Did England qualify already?

  12. #412
Yeah it's best if we concentrate on banter regarding our nation's bad performances rather than anything else.

Hoping for a narrow 1:0 win by Croatia, which would seal a successful multi placement bet.

someone needs to explain to me sterling, grealish and saka in those positions, what the fok

I agree with getting back to banter. lets go back to laughing at portugal.

England and Czech Republic guaranteed through, even with 3rd place finish. If Croatia v Scotland has a winner, the winner there is through as well.

Only one I don't get is why Saka over Sancho.

Great opening attempt from Sterling, England need to keep rushing at the opposition, force them to commit to tackles.

This Scotland deserves so much more! Let's go!

Ref at England game looks like he wants to participate in the match himself. Always so central in front of the box. Must be hella annoying.

Also, there goes my bet, Cro Sco 1:1. Damn

Why? From the stats Scotland is so much worse. 27% possession and barely 100 passes so far. Sounds to me as if they're extremely passive. Can't watch the game directly so dunno.

Because they have hearth and never give up, for me that's more valuable than experience and other things. They have more corners, more shots on target too. Possession alone doesn't mean much.

    Saka making England look useful.

So I heard everyone goes crazy about Delta variants. How exactly does this fit into the decision to let 60k visitors into the finals?

    Like sometimes I just can't
