Florida passes bill asking students to disclose political affiliation

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill...culty-be%3famp

In what DeSantis says is an effort to promote "diverse thought", the Florida bill that makes students and faculty disclose their political affiliation sounds more like a supreme court case waiting to happen. Many have even stated that it's a bill needed to stop "liberal indoctrination".

There have been suggestions that universities who lean too far in one direction will get funding cut.

Universities are already a very diverse center of thought where people debate beliefs and verify what can be verified. This sounds more like an effort to justify cutting university funding and/or jam pack the departments with counter-factual minded faculty.

Researchers professors and students are already selected on merit of their knowledge. It just so happens that most universities are very progressively minded by virtue of those who seek knowledge and higher education being more progressive.

I realize conservatives are shitting their pants over becoming a waning political party in the wake of Trump, but this, the voter suppression Bills, and others are just the desperate cries.

"So, Mr. Bursar, who applied this year?"
"Um, looks like another class of 100% 'independents' again."
"Huh. That's happened every year since 2021. What are the odds?"

Are they gonna make them wear little badges or patches, so they can be readily identified? Like a little red star for communists? And maybe a yellow star for Jewi . . .

Golly willikers, Florida. Looks like you're going Nazi again.

They do say history repeats. I like to think of it like pandora's box. You want to bring racial identity back into politics? Well you can crack open the lid but no matter how hard you try more spirits are going to slip free.

This is going to get overturned so fucking quick, DeSantis' head is going to spin.

Bound to fail. Who would answer such a survey honestly? Heck I've been in classes as a college student where I somewhat even agreed with the professor and still played up to what they person wanted to hear just to move it along. If you wanted to avoid college campuses just becoming places for sermons about whatever political ideology or pseudo-ideology is in fashion, you'd have to control the ideology of professors and basically obliterate administrative bloat on campuses so that there isn't a reason for this kind of cut throat political mania. Hiring diverse professors and making sure no one ideology is a plausible path to a sinecure within an ever expanding campus bureaucracy is more useful that surveys.

It is in fact a core feature, not a bug, that every new step in the “culture war” seems to require a new federal commission, corporate diversity department, or university star chamber to be staffed and funded. It is similarly a “feature” that behind every claim that this or that area is “too [x],” the expected resolution is always that more resources be diverted to new hires (preferably the particular person or persons raising the alarm) to correct this imbalance, or that some people be fired so that their jobs can pass to the more deserving. Today these fights over jobs, grants, and resources are not understood as fights over jobs, grants, and resources, but as wars over “culture” and “values,” wars that just—by the strangest coincidence—happen to involve all the other material things, supposedly as some sort of trifling afterthought. The immediate payday, we are told, is just a small step on the way to some far-reaching goal.

If DeSantis were serious he would be going more stringently after the patronage network that fuels this entire thing. Conservatives always assume this stuff is coming from some principle or some conviction or belief, instead of seeing the obvious that this is a bitter cut throat battle for sinecures, patronage, NGO jobs, grants, resources and funding.

On MMO-C we learn that Anti-Fascism is locking arms with corporations, the State Department and agreeing with the CIA, But opposing the CIA and corporate America, and thinking Jews have a right to buy land and can expect tenants to pay rent THAT is ultra-Fash Nazism. Well this should get struck down in the courts like Dikembe Mutombo blocking shots in those old Geico commercials. Funny enough though reading the article there was something I actually agree with

The measure was among three education bills signed by DeSantis Tuesday. Other measures included an expansion of civics education for K-12 schools...
I completely agree with this because Government and Civics course are desperately needed in High School. Teaching kids about how Government works and the ins and outs of our Constitution is vitally important in this country.

..., including instruction about the perils of communist and totalitarian governments.
OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE FLORIDA! Let me guess when teaching the perils of Totalitarianism DeSantis is just going to have them skimp over that oh so insignificant moment in history during the 1930's-1945 in Germany so they can really hammer home Communism and Socialism over and over again. Would hate to anger one of DeSantis core followers in the Nazis. Oh wait I know, while they skimp over that totally forgettable totalitarian government in Germany they will definitely make sure to hammer into the kids that Socialism was in the ruling parties name so they know SOCIALISM IS BAD! Nothing fights the supposed indoctrination of kids like indoctrinating them in your preferred indoctrination.

The entire premise is ludicrous, have you dealt with any teenagers in your life? Do you think it matters what your professor believes in unless the subject is political science?

The facts are people grow up and form opinion different from their parents. This shit reminds me of my parents who blame college for me not hating gay people. The reality was I just made friends with some and they were not the monsters they portrayed them to be.

The right wing wants their kids to not grow up and form independent thought. It's ludicrous and hypocritical beyond words, your kids are not your clones.

There's also the idea that: kids whose parents aren't constantly demonizing higher education are probably more likely to pursue higher education...and no bonus for guessing which way they're already probably leaning politically before they leave home. Not every SJW college kid out there screaming at their dean for not being inclusive enough is rebelling against their parents.

But fundamentalist preachers whine about this same shit. It's almost like when kids leave home, the indoctrination stops, and they start to see how the world works from outside the delusional bubble their parents/church/community have erected around themselves, their view of things might start to change. It doesn't take the mythical woke atheist Marxist professor who demands that their students admit that "God is dead" and "white men are evil" to do that.

    Yes, it does.

I didn't study anything even remotely related to political sciences, but several of the professors were quite clear about their political leanings and it was also quite obvious that if you sprinkled your work with pro-socialist opinions (which was their publicly declared leaning as was obvious for the multitudes they brought it up in discussing various topics, related or not related to the course subject) they'd give better grades too.

Does it influence the students' opinions though? I assume it only does those who didn't form a concrete political opinion or bias yet.

Other than that I also remember once having a guest-professor over who came to give a lecture on the "history of socialism" who got treated quite disrespectfully by the students for it.

You are simply wrong and delusional, the biggest influence in college are not your professors but your peers. It's also laughable that republicans think it's fine for 18 year olds to go to war and die but god forbid they are exposed to other people's beliefs.

This seems like a bad idea. Watch the Green party have insane supporter numbers at that university.

I'd love to find one conservative that can explain the train of thought that leads to liberal indoctrination.

So is Florida going to give out Red Triangles or will students be forced to buy their own?

When you learn about science and history you end up as a liberal.
